[2]NHHC DANFS, 'Tatarrax (YTB-372)' [nhhc_danfs]

- Service-history paragraphs 2-5
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS traces Tatarrax through Galveston, the Panama Canal, Pearl Harbor, Eniwetok, Ulithi, and Leyte in 1944-1945. She entered reserve 24 October 1946, returned to service in 1958, and was redesignated YTM-372 in February 1962. It records a temporary Atomic Energy Commission transfer on 15 May 1958 and a November 1972 survey finding her unfit for further naval service.

- Voyage and administrative history only. DANFS does not identify asbestos, a particular worksite exposure, or the nature of any 1958 experiments. Its 'presumably' explanation for the Atomic Energy Commission transfer is excluded.

[3]NHHC DANFS, 'Tatarrax (YTB-372)'; NAVSEA, Ship History, 28 June 2011, p. 104 [other_primary]
- Locator
- NAVSEA p. 104, YTM 0372 row; DANFS final paragraph
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- DANFS states that Tatarrax was stricken 1 May 1973, later transferred to the University of Hawaii, and disposed of by Navy sale on 1 March 1974. A NAVSEA inactive-ship history list instead records YTM 0372 TATARRAX with removal date 8 March 1974 and final disposition 'DONATION.' The final transaction date and method are unresolved.

- Limitations
- NAVSEA PDF was visible in indexed text but the direct PDF download returned HTTP 403; underlying disposal documents were not retrieved. Removal, donation, transfer, and sale may denote separate events, but this has not been established. Neither source addresses asbestos.

- Locator
- Index rows QPL-15091-5, QPL-15342-(1-12), and QPL-33-P-16
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NAVSEA's asbestos reading-room index lists Navy qualified-product files dated within Tatarrax's active years for asbestos-fiber thermal insulation felt (1962), metallic-asbestos spiral-wound gaskets (1961-1974), and asbestos packing (1950-1960). These document era Navy product categories, not purchases or installation for Tatarrax.

- Population
- Navy shipboard personnel and repair workers (general context)
- Limitations
- Navy-wide qualified-product index, not an Allaquippa-class specification or YTB-372 procurement record. Product qualification does not prove that any listed material was installed, retained, disturbed, or encountered aboard this tug. No ship-specific asbestos finding follows.

- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA identifies RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence and engineering drawings as paths for vessel-level asbestos research, including hull-series S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping drawings. NARA also states that 'in service' harbor tugs generally did not have permanently retained independent deck logs and reported through parent commands.

- Limitations
- Research-path guidance only; no Tatarrax drawing or correspondence file was retrieved. NARA notes a partial World War II exception to the deck-log rule, so absence of a Tatarrax log is not established.

- Finding
- An exact-name CourtListener opinion hit, Torrejon v. Mobil Oil Co., 876 So. 2d 877 (La. Ct. App. 2004), concerns a TATARRAX stipulated to be among vessels owned by Mobil or predecessor companies during a merchant mariner's 1941-1949 and 1956 service. It is a different vessel from Navy harbor tug YTB-372, which was not launched until April 1944 and remained in Navy service. The appellate affirmance in the Mobil asbestos case supplies no finding about Navy Tatarrax.

- Study period
- 1941-1956 alleged employment; 2004 opinion
- Population
- Joseph Torrejon (merchant mariner on Mobil vessels; not attributed to Navy Tatarrax)
- Limitations
- Name-collision exclusion. The court's findings and affirmed judgment concern Mobil's merchant vessel and employer, not YTB-372; the opinion gives no Navy hull number and cannot support asbestos presence, exposure, or litigation concerning the Navy tug. The listed years are a collective service period across eight Mobil vessels, not individually proven dates for Mobil's Tatarrax.
