Documented for this hull: 'Tazha (YT-147) was laid down on 8 August 1940 at Morris Heights, N.Y., by the Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp.; launched on Lincoln's birthday 1941; and completed and placed in service on 14 June 1941.' Served her entire Navy career at Norfolk, Va., in the Fifth Naval District as a harbor tug June 1941 - March 1946; reclassified harbor tug (big) YTB-147 on 15 May 1944; placed out of service in reserve March 1946; inactive at Norfolk until July 1952 when returned to active service; reclassified medium harbor tug YTM-147 February 1962; 'decommissioned, and her name stricken from the Naval Vessel Register, on 1 May 1973. She was disposed-of, by Navy Sale, on 1 May 1974.' Marine Logistics, Seattle, acquired the tug and renamed her Robert W. (1974); in 1987 Alaska Marine Towing, of Juneau, purchased her and renamed her Cold Bay. Spec block: displacement 218; length 100'0"; beam 25'0"; draft 9'7" (full load); speed 12 knots (trial); complement 12; class Woban. Name: a Sioux word meaning 'wave of the sea.'

Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. 'Launched on Lincoln's birthday 1941' resolved to 12 February 1941 by the Mystic Seaport launch-negative date (ev-04). 'Decommissioned' is applied loosely to an in-service district craft - see gaps. (ON 561695), 1974; sold to Alaska Marine Towing, Juneau, AK, and renamed Cold Bay, 1987; 'final disposition, no longer documented.' Specifications: displacement 218 tons (light) 325 (full load); length 100'; beam 25'; draft 11' (max); speed 12 kts; complement 12; armament unknown; propulsion diesel, single screw. Awards listed: American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; National Defense Service Medal (2). Photo caption places Tazha (YTM-147) at NOB Norfolk August 1964 assisting Thuban (AKA-19) getting underway. National Archives photos 19-N-24246 through 19-N-24249 document her newly completed off New York City 13 June 1941.

    Limitations
Volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track DANFS. Spec conflicts with DANFS spec block (draft 11' max vs 9'7" full load; adds 325-ton full-load displacement; class table variants - see gaps). 'For scrapping' in the DRMS line conflicts with the same page's commercial-registry record - the tug was documented, not scrapped; carried as written. Contains no asbestos content.

The same list documents her three same-yard Woban-class sisters as consecutive hulls: 3106 Montezuma (YT-145), 3107 Hoga (YT-146, Pearl Harbor survivor, later fireboat City of Oakland and museum ship at Little Rock), and 3109 Wenonah (YT-148, ON 565868, sold 1975, sank 2009).

Secondary reference compilation (industry-standard shipyard list, not a registry record) - the 'sank in Mexico 1987' disposition is an unverified secondary claim that NavSource leaves 'no longer documented'; carried here as a disposition lead, not an established fact, and flagged in gaps. Finding
Class documentation through a same-yard sister: the NHL nomination describes Hoga (YT-146) - built by Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp. at Morris Heights, one yard number (3107) before Tazha (3108) - as 'a typical US Navy yard tug of the period': welded steel construction, 99.7 ft length overall, 25.6-ft breadth, 10.6-ft draft, 350 tons displacement; diesel-electric powered with 'twin Diesel 650-hp McIntosh and Seymour engines' driving 'twin 515-hp Westinghouse electric motors' through a common reduction gear to a single screw at 160 rpm, plus two original 410-kw DC generators; 'the arrangement of machinery reflects a common engineering technique for a Diesel-electric tugboat of the period.' Nomination also documents that 'like other YTs, she carried firefighting equipment.'

Program-level context for her reclassifications: 'On 15 May 1944 all of the above still in service were reclassified from YT (Harbor Tug) to YTB (Harbor Tug Big) except for the early YT 119, 128, 129, 133, and 134 which were reclassified YTM... Finding
A diesel-electric district harbor tug built 1940-41 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a yard tug of this type and period were engine and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation around the diesel generator sets, the propulsion motor, and the switchboard, within the small, poorly ventilated machinery space of a 100-foot tug. As a diesel-electric craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Tazha (YT-147 / YTB-147 / YTM-147) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was swept to completion 2026-10-05 (authenticated, 4 base queries): '"USS Tazha"' returned zero opinions and zero dockets; '"YT-147"' returned zero opinions and two dockets, both name collisions (ALS Scan, Inc. v. Cloudflare, Inc., 2:16-cv-05051, C.D. Cal., copyright; John Hancock Life Insurance Company v. Abbott Laboratories, 1:05-cv-11150, D. Mass., contract) - neither vessel- nor asbestos-related. The NPS NHL nomination for her same-yard sister describes class construction and machinery with no asbestos or insulation-material statement. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941 diesel-electric Navy tug retained in commercial service into the 1980s is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and her post-Navy material history is undocumented. The litigation-repository negative covers the CourtListener opinion and docket indexes as of 2026-10-05; state-court and unindexed filings are out of scope. Builder-yard records, any Norfolk maintenance records, and the DRMS sale file are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
