DANFS identifies the first Terry (Torpedo Boat Destroyer No. 25) as a Newport News-built torpedo boat destroyer: laid down 8 February 1909 at Newport News, Va., by the Newport News Shipbuilding Co.; launched 21 August 1909, sponsored by Mrs. George Henry Rock; commissioned 18 October 1910, Lt. Comdr. Martin E. Trench in command. Specification block: displacement 887 (full); length 293'10"; beam 26'11" (waterline, character-degraded in mirror); draft 10'11" (aft); speed 30.24 knots (trial); complement 89; armament 5 x 3-inch guns, 2 x .30-caliber machine guns, 6 x 18-inch torpedo tubes; class listed as 'Roe'.

DANFS establishes identity, builder, construction dates, and period specifications - not materials, insulation composition, or asbestos content. Live NHHC DANFS page (history.navy.mil/.../danfs/t/terry.html) returns HTTP 404 and hazegray.org fails DNS resolution, so the verbatim transcription mirror is cited. The spec block's 'cl. Roe' and NHHC's 'Paulding class' naming differ - carried in gaps.

DANFS records Terry's service: Atlantic Fleet Torpedo Flotilla winter operations in Cuban waters alternating with New England coast exercises until November 1913, when she arrived at Charleston, S.C., for overhaul and was placed in reserve; Florida coast cruising 1914; Cuban waters February 1915; Newport, R.I., torpedo exercises summer 1915; reduced-complement destroyer division from 1 January 1916; Key West 31 January 1916; Santo Domingo May 1916; on 10 June 1916 struck a reef in Puerto Plata inner harbor and settled until the greater part of the main deck was submerged; salvage under supervision of the commanding officer of Sacramento (Gunboat No. 19); refloated ('26 July' as printed - see gaps); temporarily repaired by 7 July; reached Charleston Navy Yard 15 July; still undergoing extensive repairs when the United States entered World War I; then Atlantic coast patrol and merchantman escort; January 1918 to Queenstown, Ireland, destroyer force for convoy escort around the British Isles (no U-boat sighted; assisted Manley, Destroyer No. 74, after her 19 March 1918 accidental depth-charge explosion); returned to the United States December 1918; decommissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard 13 November 1919; transferred to the Coast Guard 7 June 1924; served until 18 October 1930, when she was returned to the Navy and restored on the Navy list in decommissioned status as 'a vessel to be disposed of by sale or salvage'; sold for scrapping 2 May 1934; name struck from the Navy list 28 June 1934.

Service history and yard locations only. DANFS records the Charleston Navy Yard overhaul (1913) and the long Charleston repair period (1916-1917) without describing work scope, insulation, or materials - no asbestos finding follows from a yard period. The printed 'refloated on 26 July ... temporarily repaired by 7 July' sequence is internally inconsistent (repairs dated before refloating); secondary compilations read 26 June - flagged in gaps rather than silently reconciled.

NHHC's Online Library ship page (mirrored via HyperWar/ibiblio) corroborates the DANFS narrative: '742-ton Paulding class destroyer' built at Newport News, placed in commission October 1910; routine pre-war operations in U.S. East Coast and Caribbean waters, sometimes in reserve status; 'In June 1916 Terry was nearly lost in a grounding accident and spent much of the next year undergoing repairs at the Charleston Navy Yard, South Carolina'; western Atlantic patrol and convoy escort, then Ireland early 1918; decommissioned a year after the Armistice; inactive at Philadelphia Navy Yard until June 1924 transfer to the U.S. Coast Guard; 'As USCGC Terry (CG-19) she was employed ... in the intense struggle against liquor smugglers'; returned to the Navy October 1930 and laid up; sold for scrapping May 1934.

Official photo-catalog page; corroborates history and confirms the Coast Guard hull designation CG-19, but contains no materials, insulation, or asbestos information. '742-ton' (normal) vs. DANFS's 887 (full load) reflect different load conditions, not a conflict. The live history.navy.mil equivalent is 404; the mirrored Naval Historical Center page is cited.

    Finding
NARA's Special List 44 (Named Vessels deck-log index) lists two deck-log runs for Terry with no hull suffix - the early-destroyer listing for this hull: 10/18/1910 to 12/31/1912 and 7/1/1913 to 11/13/1919. The first run's start matches the DANFS commissioning date (18 October 1910) and the second run's end matches the DANFS decommissioning date (13 November 1919). A separate 'Terry (DD-513)' run, 1/26/1943 to 6/30/1945, is the second Terry (Fletcher class) and is not this hull.

    Finding
NARA's Ship Plan Index lists four TERRY DD-25 entries: RG 38 Trial Curves (NAID 12451237); RG 19 Alphabetical Ship Drawings (NAID 53488225); RG 19 Portfolio Plans (NAID 175662463); and RG 19 Microfilm (NAID 175670903). These entries establish that hull-level engineering drawings and trial data for this ship exist in NARA custody; the drawings themselves were not retrieved or reviewed. Separate TERRY DD-513 index entries are a different ship.

Index entries prove holdings, not content; whether the drawings include insulation or lagging schedules is unknown. The NARA asbestos guide's hull-drawing categories (S39 insulation/lagging, S48 piping) are framed for 1941-1961 records; whether analogous drawing series exist in this hull's 1909-1910 plan set was not determined.

    Finding
NARA's shipboard-asbestos research guide states that documenting asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel is a vessel-specific research task and identifies the relevant record series: RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence filed by hull designation, General Information Books, hull-arranged ship engineering drawings including insulation/lagging and piping drawings, and RG 38 Board of Inspection and Survey reports.

A research method and record-series map, not a DD-25 material record. The guide's stated scope is 1941-1961 - entirely after this hull's 1910-1919 Navy service and 1934 disposal - so its enumerated series may not hold DD-25-era equivalents; pre-1940 Bureau of Construction and Repair / Bureau of Engineering records would be the more likely period analogues. No DD-25 item was retrieved from any listed series.

    Finding
CourtListener sweep, substantially executed: the exact-phrase opinion query '"USS Terry"' (type=o) returned zero results - no opinion in the index names this hull. The RECAP docket query '"USS Terry"' (type=r) also returned zero (count=0, document_count=0) - no docket names 'USS Terry' at all, for either this hull or the WWII-era Terry (DD-513). The hull-number opinion query '"DD-25"' returned three results, all name collisions: New Hampshire Ins. Co. v. Petrik, 343 So. 2d 48 (Fla. Dist. Ct. App. 1977), matched on its docket number 'No. DD-25'; Esquire Restaurant, Inc. v. Commonwealth Insurance Co., 393 F.2d 111 (7th Cir. 1968), and Sunkist Growers v. Winckler & Smith Citrus Products, 284 F.2d 1 (9th Cir. 1960), matched on non-vessel text - none references the ship and none is asbestos litigation. The Coast Guard designation query '"CG-19"' (type=o) and the phrasing variant '"aboard Terry"' (type=o) each returned zero. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located.

The exact-name negative is established on both the opinion and RECAP docket indexes, and 'CG-19' and 'aboard Terry' opinion variants are empty. One residual query - '"DD-25"' on the docket index - was stood down by fleet pacing; given the '"USS Terry"' docket negative, residual exposure risk is low. 'Terry' is a high-collision name and a second USS Terry (DD-513, Fletcher class, 1943-1974, sold to Peru) exists; any future Terry hit must be era-checked - litigation naming 'USS Terry' and describing WWII Pacific service would be DD-513, not this hull.

A bounded negative finding about this online search, not proof the ship lacked asbestos. The hull predates the 1941-1961 asbestos-documentation framework entirely; unexamined NARA holdings (RG 19 drawings NAIDs 53488225, 175662463, 175670903; RG 38 trial curves NAID 12451237; deck logs 1910-1919; period Bureau of Construction and Repair correspondence) may change the result.
