- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 25 September 1918 at San Francisco by Bethlehem Steel Corp.; launched 15 January 1919, sponsored by Mrs. Herbert H. Harris; commissioned at Mare Island Navy Yard 16 August 1920 (Lt. Comdr. H. L. Best). Shakedown to Magdalena Bay; DesDiv 32 / DesRon 11, Battle Fleet, out of San Diego; 1921 maneuvers off Panama and Chile south of Valparaiso; Puget Sound Navy Yard overhaul Dec 1921-Feb 1922; 1926 Hawaiian fleet problems then Battle Fleet goodwill cruise to Australia/New Zealand (Pago Pago, Melbourne, Dunedin, Wellington), back at San Diego 26 September 1926; early-1927 east-coast visits (Norfolk, Newport, New York). Decommissioned 4 April 1930 under the 1930 London Naval Treaty; struck from the Navy list 22 June 1930; sold for scrap '10 June' (year truncated in mirror transcription - resolved to 1931 by the NHHC photo record, ev-02). Served as a floating restaurant in lower San Francisco Bay through the 1930s; repurchased by the Navy February 1944 and partly sunk in SF Bay mud flats for dummy-bomb bombing runs by Army and Navy aircraft.

- Population
- Construction trades (San Francisco, 1918-1920); interwar crew (design complement 122)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC DANFS page returns 404 (standing NHHC link rot per BATCH-01). Transcription truncates the sale year ('10 June') and opens with a typographical slip '(DD-306)'; day/month and June-1931 year are corroborated by the NHHC photo record.

- NHHC photo record for this hull: commissioned August 1920; operated mainly in the Pacific with Panama Canal transits for Caribbean/Atlantic exercises; early-1921 cruise south to Valparaiso, Chile; member of the destroyer squadron involved in the 8 September 1923 Honda Point disaster but not herself damaged; mid-1920s trans-Pacific Battle Fleet cruise to Australia and New Zealand; decommissioned April 1930, stripped of military fittings, sold June 1931 (confirms year for DANFS's truncated '10 June'); converted by buyers to a floating restaurant; hulk repurchased by the Navy February 1944, placed on San Francisco Bay mud flats, used as a bombing target; reportedly still existed, much deteriorated, into the 1970s.

- Population
- Interwar crew; bombing-training aircrews (1944-45)
- Limitations
- Official NHHC catalog record, verbatim on the HyperWar mirror. Documents disposition and the Honda Point squadron membership (absent from the DANFS narrative); the photo page loosely dates the Australia/NZ cruise 'mid-1925' where DANFS dates it 1926 - conflict carried in gaps. No asbestos or materials content.

[4]NOAA CO-OPS tide-prediction station 9414609 'South Bay Wreck', San Francisco Bay, CA (37.5517 N, 122.162 W) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NOAA CO-OPS station 9414609 metadata (mdapi stations.json)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NOAA's Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services maintains an active tide-prediction station named 'South Bay Wreck' (station 9414609) at 37.5517 N, 122.162 W - the charted name and position of this hull's partially submerged remains in San Francisco Bay mud flats south of the San Mateo Bridge, corroborating that the wreck persists as a named navigational reference point.

- Population
- Bay mariners; wreck-site visitors
- Limitations
- Establishes the wreck's continued charted existence and position only; contains no materials, asbestos, or condition information about the hulk. Station is a tide-prediction reference, not a survey of the vessel.

[5]DANFS specifications block (Clemson class; 1,308 tons; 36 kt; 122 complement) + class/era record; NARA RG19 'General Information Books' and RG24 deck logs archival leads [other_primary]
- Locator
- DANFS specifications block; shipyards.json yard_id lookup (Union Iron Works / Bethlehem San Francisco - absent)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/class inference: a Clemson-class flush-deck destroyer built 1918-1920 with a four-boiler geared-steam-turbine plant would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler and steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing - asbestos was the standard marine steam-plant insulation of the WWI era. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' (per-hull material specifications) and RG24 deck logs are the archival leads for ship-specific confirmation; neither was retrieved. The builder yard (Bethlehem Steel Corp., San Francisco - former Union Iron Works) is not in the Atlas shipyards dataset.

- Construction trades (San Francisco, 1918-1920); interwar crew
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no ship-specific finding. No source located that names asbestos aboard this hull; the claim rests on standard WWI-era marine steam-plant practice. Builder-yard absence from the shipyard dataset is a dataset gap, not evidence about the yard.

[6]CourtListener API v4 searches: "USS Thompson" (type=o) - 2 hits, both name collisions; "DD-305" (type=o) - 2 hits, both docket-number collisions; RECAP docket legs blocked by fleet pacing - see search_ledger [court_record]

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located on CourtListener. Exact-name "USS Thompson" (opinions): 2 hits, both Quality Transportation Services, Inc. v. Mark Thompson Trucking, Inc. (Ill. App. 3d 2018 and 2021) - a litigant surname, not a vessel. Hull-number "DD-305" (opinions): 2 hits, both docket-number collisions - Raulerson v. General Finance Corp., 350 So. 2d 1111 (Fla. Dist. Ct. App. 1977, docket 'No. DD-305', employment) and Pennsylvania State Troopers' Ass'n v. Pennsylvania State Police, 718 A.2d 1288 (Pa. Commw. 1998). Neither references the vessel. RECAP docket legs (type=r for both queries) were attempted repeatedly but blocked by the saturated fleet-wide pacing budget across the session - logged as blocked in the ledger rather than retried into a ban. Name-collision screening is mandatory because a second USS Thompson (DD-627) was in commission 1943-1971, the window in which most Navy asbestos litigation arises.

- Finding type

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1918-1920 steam destroyer is era-consistent with retained asbestos materials, and the partially extant hulk has never been publicly surveyed. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
