DANFS record for this hull: laid down 1 May 1941 at Charleston, S.C., by the Charleston Navy Yard; launched 20 December 1941 (a dual launching with sister Beatty DD-640 per NHHC photos NH 41784/41785, NH 103766); sponsored by Mrs. Charles Sumner Moore; commissioned 4 June 1942, Lt. Comdr. Francis Douglas McCorkle in command. June-September 1942 shakedown off the east coast; Eastern Sea Frontier convoy escort September-October. 23 October 1942 departed Chesapeake Bay with the Operation Torch convoy; 7-8 November screened the Center Attack Group transports off Fedhala, engaged Vichy patrol vessel W-43 (exploded and beached), captured three French merchantmen; 10 November with Augusta (CA-31) and Edison (DD-439) fought Vichy destroyers off Casablanca under El Hank shore-battery fire, maneuvering up to 34 kt; 12 November escorted a convoy home through 50-60-foot seas, arriving New York 1 December. 8 February 1943 sideswiped the paravane boom of an improperly illuminated merchant vessel in New York harbor; repaired at New York; Eastern Sea Frontier escort through March. Screened the 5 July 1943 Oran sortie of the Husky convoy; 10 July fired first salvo into Yellow Beach 0331 supporting the Scoglitti landings, a six-bomb stick 300 yards off the starboard bow knocked out radar at 0430, silenced a shore battery an hour later; patrolled and fired shore-observer missions 10-11 July; Oran 16 July. 2 September 1943 evaded a German torpedo plane's torpedo 30 yards ahead en route to Bizerte (Kendrick DD-612 hit in the same attack); 6 September Bizerte air raid, 13 crew injured by a spent shell on deck. 6 November 1943 off Cape Bougaroun helped repel a ~26-aircraft glider-bomb/torpedo raid that sank Beatty and two merchantmen: splashed a glider bomb ~160 yards off the port bow, shot down a launching plane, evaded torpedoes passing 60 and 100 feet off, and rescued survivors of SS Santa Elena, disembarking them at Philippeville. December 1943 through 1944 convoy escort between U.S., Mediterranean, and U.K. ports with overhauls at New York and exercises off New England. Pacific 1945: departed Delaware Bay 28 March, Pearl Harbor 21 April, lifeguard/ASW picket out of Guam and Ulithi until September; 6 September at Tomil Harbor the Yap Island garrison formally surrendered aboard Tillman; Carolines/southern Marianas until 3 November; Charleston mid-December for inactivation. Decommissioned 6 February 1947; entry reads 'struck from the Navy list in March 1972' (conflict carried in gaps). Three battle stars for World War II service.

Charleston Navy Yard construction trades 1941-42; wartime crew (design complement 276); reserve-fleet caretakers 1947-70
    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, builder, specifications, service history, and disposition - it contains no materials or asbestos content. The ibiblio transcription carries Pacific-phase years as 1946 ('first three months of 1946,' '3 November 1946,' '11 December 1946'); the NHHC Online Library summary and Wikipedia's transcription of the same entry carry 1945, and the '>1 year inactivation -> February 1947 decommissioning' sequence requires the December 1945 arrival - carried in gaps rather than silently reconciled. The transcribed stricken line 'March 1972' conflicts with NHHC Online Library 'June 1970' and NavSource '1 June 1970' - carried in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

NHHC Online Library record for this hull corroborates and supplements DANFS: Torch convoy escort and Casablanca action November 1942; Sicily invasion July 1943; Atlantic/Mediterranean convoy escort through end-1944 with the 2 September 1943 torpedo evasion and the 6 November 1943 glider-bomb action ('her guns shot down two of the bombers and at least two of the bombs'); Pacific transfer April 1945; ASW/air-rescue duty near Guam and the Carolines; 'After Japan's capitulation in early September 1945, the surrender of Yap Island was signed on her deck'; return to Charleston 'in mid-December' 1945; 'more than a year preparing for inactivation' then 'placed out of commission in February 1947'; 'Laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet for more than two decades'; disposition per this source: 'stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in June 1970. She was sold for scrapping in May 1972.' NavSource data block adds: stricken 1 June 1970; 'Sold to Southern Scrap Material, New Orleans for $67,000 May 8 1972 and broken up for scrap'; flag hoist NWKL; CO list McCorkle (Jun 1942-Aug 1943), Hutchings (Aug 1943-Nov 1944), Dimberg (Nov 1944-1946); an NHC photo caption records the namesake's portrait 'was removed from USS Tillman (DD-641) in August 1969, nearly a year before the ship was stricken' - i.e., the laid-up hull was accessed aboard during reserve-fleet custody.

    Limitations
NHHC Online Library is official NHHC content (via ibiblio mirror); its June 1970 stricken and May 1972 sale dates conflict with the DANFS transcription's 'March 1972' stricken line - the two NHHC products disagree, conflict carried in gaps. NavSource is a reputable secondary data compilation: its 'Decommissioned March 16 1946' conflicts with DANFS/NHHC-OL's February 1947 and is impossible on its face (the ship operated in the Pacific into November 1945) - treated as a transcription error and carried in gaps. No asbestos or materials content in either source.

    Finding
Era/yard inference: this hull is a Gleaves-subclass member of the Benson/Gleaves machinery family - 4 superheated boilers (575 psi/700F per BuShips Ships' Data 1945 for the class) driving geared turbines at ~50,000 shp - built 1941-42 at the peak Navy asbestos era. Period-standard applications: boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-pipe and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets and packing, fireproofing, deck coverings. Builder Charleston Navy Yard (Atlas charleston-naval-shipyard, tier 2) has documented asbestos product classes in yard use including pipe insulation at 5-50% asbestos content and spray-on insulation 'for walls and ship interiors'. Documented yard windows: Charleston NY construction/fitting-out May 1941 - June 1942; New York repair availability February 1943 and overhaul(s) 1944 (NHHC photos NH 103760/103761 place the ship off the New York Navy Yard 8 October 1944); Charleston inactivation December 1945 - February 1947.

Unexploited archival leads for hull-level material documentation: NARA RG24 deck-log series (NAID 594258) covering the commissioned period of this hull (1942-1947); RG19 General Information Books (per-vessel specification books historically capturing insulation/material schedules); Charleston Navy Yard inactivation records (decommissioned and placed in reserve there February 1947); and Atlantic Reserve Fleet custody/mothballing records 1947-1970 (inactivation and preservation work on a reserve hull is the type of activity whose records would document material disturbance or removal). NARA also holds wartime imagery of this hull (80-G-16148/49/50/51 series, 1942). No digitized survey, abatement, or material-schedule document for this hull was located in public sources.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy (Bankr. E.D. Mo. No. 16-40120, filed 2016; the 'DD-641' string sits inside a 560-page plan-schedules filing, a document/schedule identifier, not the vessel) and Hill v. Potter (N.D. Ill. No. 1:07-cv-06835, employment discrimination 2007-09; the string sits inside an EEO investigative-affidavit exhibit). Neither references the vessel and neither is asbestos litigation. 'aboard the Tillman'/'U.S.S. Tillman' name-variant queries were deferred by the fleet-wide pacing gate (shared ~114/hr budget) - logged as blocked in the ledger.

Sweep covers CourtListener-indexed opinion and RECAP docket text only; un-indexed dockets, state-court filings, and non-digitized records are outside coverage, and absence of located litigation does not mean none exists. 'Tillman' is a high-collision surname (extensive party-name litigation); DD-641 is the second of two commissioned USS Tillmans - DD-135 (Wickes-class, also Charleston-built) ended U.S. Navy service 26 November 1940 (struck 8 January 1941; to the Royal Navy as HMS Wells) before DD-641 was launched, so any post-1941 'USS Tillman' reference is this hull, but a bare-name hit would still warrant hull-attribution checking.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-42 steam destroyer sits inside the Navy's peak asbestos era and the era inference stands on its own. The hull was scrapped; no surviving artifact or museum record exists to inspect. Does not establish or defeat any individual claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
