DANFS record for this hull: laid down 8 August 1918 at Quincy, Mass., by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp.; launched 24 April 1919, sponsored by Miss Mary Velora Arringdale; commissioned at the Boston Navy Yard (HazeGray transcription reads 26 July 1919 - conflict flagged in gaps), Comdr. Alfred W. Brown in command. Joined Division 31, Squadron 2, Flotilla 10, at San Diego late in December 1919; operated out of San Diego with the Pacific Fleet for two and one-half years at about 50 percent of normal complement in quasi-reserve status, conducting operations and patrols along the western coast of Mexico; reassigned to Division 29, Squadron 10, in the latter part of 1921. Decommissioned 24 May 1922 and berthed at San Diego for the remainder of her career. Struck from the Navy list 19 May 1936 after 14 years of inactivity; sold to the Schiavone-Bonomo Corp. of New York City 29 September 1936; scrapped in December (1936). Spec line: 1,215 t. (n.); 314'4.5" x 30'11" x 9'9.75" (aft); 31.53 k. (tl.); cpl. 122; 4 4", 1 3", 12 21" tt., 2 dct.; cl. Clemson.

Bethlehem Shipbuilding (Squantum) construction trades 1918-19; Boston Navy Yard fitting-out trades; crew 1919-1922 (design complement 122, routinely ~50 percent per DANFS)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and the design spec line, not materials or asbestos content. Commissioning date conflicts with other sources (26 July per this transcription vs 25 July per NARA deck-log index and secondary compilations - carried in gaps). Finding
DANFS entry for the first Tingey (TB-34) documents the origin of this hull's name: 'In September 1918, the torpedo boat's name was canceled so that it could be given to Destroyer No. 272, one of the new Clemson-class destroyers. The older vessel then became Coast Torpedo Boat No. 17.' DD-272 was therefore laid down 8 August 1918 under her builder/hull designation and received the name Tingey about one month into construction. Namesake is Commodore Thomas Tingey (sponsor of TB-34 was 'the great-great granddaughter of Commodore Thomas Tingey').

    Finding
Official NHHC/NHC photo catalog records for this hull: NH 45265 is the Online Library's own picture-data page for Tingey (Destroyer # 272) at anchor circa 1919. NH 43161 photographs the 'Victory Destroyer Plant, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Squantum, Massachusetts - interior of the wet slips' between 24 May and 21 July 1919, with Tingey (Destroyer # 272) among the hulls whose bows are visible alongside Meade, Swasey, and Morris - confirming the Squantum construction yard. NH 69516 shows Destroyer Division THIRTY-ONE moored together off San Diego circa 1922 with Tingey (DD-272) identified among Bailey, Thornton, Morris, Swasey, and Meade - matching the DANFS Division 31 assignment. NH 42539 ('Red Lead Row,' San Diego Destroyer Base, end of 1922) identifies Tingey among at least 65 laid-up destroyers - documenting her post-decommissioning reserve berth.

    Finding
NARA's Special List 44 indexes Tingey (DD-272) deck logs for 7/25/1919-5/24/1922 - a single run matching the hull's entire commissioned period, and corroborating the 25 July 1919 commissioning date carried by NavSource and other secondary sources against the HazeGray DANFS transcription's 26 July. (The index also lists unlabeled 'Tingey' log runs 1906-1919 belonging to TB-34/Coast Torpedo Boat No. 17, and a DD-539 run 1943-1945 - different hulls.)

guide scope 1941-1961; hull era 1918-1936
    Limitations
Research-method guidance, not a material record for this hull. The guide's named correspondence series cover 1940-1961 - they postdate Tingey's entire existence (built 1918-19, scrapped 1936), so the applicable holdings for this hull are the earlier RG 19 series and the cartographic GIB/S39 routes. The guide does not state that any Tingey or Clemson-class asbestos record exists.

    Finding
The U.S. Census historical manufactures volume carries a product category for asbestos products, steam and other packing, pipe and boiler covering, and gaskets across the 1899-1929 era - the period covering Tingey's construction (1918-19), brief commission (1919-22), and most of her reserve lay-up. These were available industrial product categories during this hull's era; none is documented aboard DD-272 by this source.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/yard inference: a Clemson-class flush-deck destroyer built 1918-19 with a geared-steam-turbine plant (class design: four boilers, two shafts) would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing; builder Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 3) with asbestos products including 85% magnesia block insulation, Marinite board, Transite pipe covering, asbestos lagging, gaskets and packing. The NH 43161 caption confirms the hull was built at Bethlehem's Squantum 'Victory Destroyer Plant'. NARA RG 19 holdings (Ship Plan Index NAIDs 53488331 and 175670937; destroyer General Information Books; S39 insulation drawings) are the archival route to hull-level specifications.

Authenticated CourtListener API v4 sweep: exact-name opinion search '"USS Tingey"' returned HTTP 200 with count 0 - no published opinion names the ship. Exact-name docket search '"USS Tingey"' returned count 1 - Livernois v. Air and Liquid Systems Corp. (N.D. Cal. 4:19-cv-02277-SBA, filed 2019-04-26, asbestos personal-injury/products-liability docket removed from Alameda County Superior Court). RECAP full text of the Notice of Removal (ECF 1, p.8) recites that plaintiff Livernois was 'exposed to asbestos containing products while serving as a Boiler Tech aboard naval vessels, including USS Norfolk, USS Charles Sperry, USS Edison, USS Tingey, USS O'Brien, USS Picking, USS Haley Powell, and USS Rowen.' The named ship cohort (Norfolk DL-1, Charles S. Sperry DD-697, Edison DD-946, O'Brien DD-725, Picking DD-685, plus 'Haley Powell' and 'Rowen' as spelled in the notice) is entirely 1940s-1960s hulls, and a 2019-filed boiler-tech claim cannot reach a hull scrapped in 1936 - 'USS Tingey' in this pleading resolves to DD-539 (in commission 1943-1966), NOT this hull. Classified: name collision, non-qualifying for DD-272. Hull-number sweep: '"DD-272"' opinions = count 0; '"DD-272"' dockets = count 5, all collisions - Corey Williams v. Garcia (C.D. Cal., civil rights), United States v. Basham (4th Cir., criminal), Kaniadakis v. Salesforce (M.D. Fla., patent), Allstate v. Medaid Radiology (S.D.N.Y., insurance), and Motors Liquidation (Bankr. S.D.N.Y., GM bankruptcy) - 'DD-272' matching in-document form/exhibit references, none naval or asbestos-related. A '"Tingey" asbestos' opinion search was attempted but withheld by the fleet pacing guard and remains unrun.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located for DD-272: no hull ACM survey, no bill of materials or insulation schedule, no abatement contract, and no museum or Navy hazmat disclosure exists for this hull in the official sources searched - the vessel was scrapped in December 1936, decades before asbestos documentation regimes, and has no custodian. No published opinion names the ship (CourtListener type=o '"USS Tingey"' count 0); the single exact-name docket hit is a real asbestos case (Livernois, N.D. Cal. 2019) but resolves to DD-539, not this hull (see ev-09); hull-number and asbestos-qualified searches remain unrun. DD-272 appears on law-firm marketing ship lists (e.g., the mesotheliomahelp.org destroyer list), which are compilations and not evidence.

Bounded search result, not proof asbestos was absent - a 1918-19 steam-powered hull is consistent with era-typical insulation, but that is inference, not ship-specific documentation.
