- Documented for this hull: the first Tinosa, laid down 21 February 1942 at Vallejo, Calif., by the Mare Island Navy Yard; launched 7 October 1942 (sponsor Mrs. William E. Molloy); commissioned 15 January 1943, Lt. Comdr. Lawrence Randall Daspit. Twelve war patrols credited with sinking 16 enemy ships totaling 64,655 tons; nine battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation for her fourth, fifth, and sixth patrols. Her second patrol was handicapped by faulty Mark 14 torpedo firing mechanisms. Overhaul at Hunters Point, Calif., from 7 August 1944; overhaul at San Francisco from 26 August 1945 (yard unnamed). Operating off the west coast January-June 1946, then reserve; placed out of commission January 1947. Recommissioned January 1952 (Korean War); decommissioned 2 December 1953; struck 1 September 1958; hulk authorized for experimental and training use 2 March 1959; scuttled off Hawaii November 1960.

- NavSource supplements: decommissioned 23 June 1949 at San Francisco (conflicts with DANFS 'placed out of commission January 1947' - logged); laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Mare Island Group; recommissioned 4 January 1952; decommissioned 2 December 1953; struck 1 September 1958; used as an ASW target then scuttled off Hawaii in November 1960. Page carries the detailed account of her 24 July 1943 engagement with the fleet's largest tanker (Tonan Maru) - 15 torpedoes fired over two days, 13 failing to explode - the incident that drove the Mark 14 torpedo firing-pin investigation. Photos document an inclining experiment at Mare Island after refit, 27 March 1943.

- Volunteer-compiled archive; consistent with DANFS on milestones. Decommissioning date (23 Jun 1949 NavSource vs Jan 1947 DANFS) unresolved - DANFS adopted. The tanker is styled 'Tonan Maru No. 3' on the page; standard references read Tonan Maru No. 2 - name not asserted. No asbestos content.

- Construction at Mare Island Navy Yard (Feb 1942-Jan 1943) with a documented post-refit inclining experiment there (March 1943), a named Hunters Point overhaul (from 7 August 1944), and an unnamed San Francisco overhaul (Aug 1945 into 1946) define her asbestos-relevant disturbance windows; Korean-era recommissioning (Jan 1952-Dec 1953) and ASW-target hulk use (1959-60) add late maintenance windows at Mare Island. As a diesel-electric fleet boat she carried no boilers or steam plant; era-standard asbestos applications for the type were diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, and insulation around galley/refrigeration equipment.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey or material list located for SS-283. Names era-standard applications for diesel-electric boats and the hull's documented yard events as disturbance pathways, not confirmed installed materials; establishes no quantities and no exposure for any individual. The 1945-46 San Francisco yard is unnamed; hulk-use scope 1959-60 undocumented.

- Finding
- A docketed asbestos personal-injury opinion recounts that after USS Thresher's 1963 loss the Navy created the SUBSAFE program, which issued procurement specification MIL-I-24244 covering asbestos-containing insulation for submarines - court-documented evidence that asbestos-containing insulation was specified in the submarine construction and maintenance regime.

- Population
- Navy submarine construction/maintenance trades, SUBSAFE era
- Limitations
- Documents the spec regime only; names no vessel as an exposure site. Postdates this hull's USN maintenance era - she was struck in 1958 and scuttled in 1960, before SUBSAFE existed; the spec documents the regime governing sister hulls, not this vessel's materials. Does not establish exposure, causation, quantity, or eligibility.

- Finding
- The Gato class's documented ship-level asbestos landscape: Dryfka v. Trane US recites a Navy reservist's alleged asbestos exposure aboard USS Drum (SS-228) as a reserve instructor at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard May 1966-Feb 1967; Lyautey v. Alfa Laval attaches exposure sheets listing USS Cavalla (SS-244) among Navy jobsites (1954-1974 window); and the Galveston Daily News reported in 2020 that asbestos had been found in the public areas of museum boat Cavalla (SS-244), with an approved abatement. All are pleading-stage or press-stage items for sister hulls, not this vessel. No pleading naming this vessel was located.

- R&R, alleged-exposure-history section (USS Tinosa references; D.I. citations at 60:18-23, 62:10-14, 64:2-10)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- NAME-COLLISION CORRECTION: the Hillyer R&R recites that the plaintiff 'was stationed on the USS Tinosa as a chief machinist's mate' after nuclear-power training at Idaho Falls, within a 1967-1997 Navy career, and alleges valve-packing exposure aboard. The only USS Tinosa in existence during that window is SSN-606 (Sturgeon-class nuclear submarine, commissioned 1964) - this hull (SS-283) was scuttled off Hawaii in November 1960, seven years before the plaintiff enlisted. The reference resolves to SSN-606, not SS-283.

- Plaintiff machinist's mate aboard SSN-606 (different hull)
- Limitations
- Chronology resolves the hull attribution (SS-283 did not exist post-1960); the opinion itself does not state a hull number. Allegation-level exposure claims for a different hull; the R&R disposed of summary-judgment motions without adjudicating exposure. Not evidence about SS-283.
