Ship entry: BDE-33 laid down at Mare Island Navy Yard 23 January 1943 as a lend-lease unit for the United Kingdom; RN allocation canceled; named Tisdale and redesignated DE-33 on 23 June 1943 when DE-228 (laid down at Boston) was assigned to the Royal Navy in her stead; launched 28 June 1943, sponsor Mrs. Elizabeth M. Limitations
DANFS documents service history and design figures, not materials or asbestos content. Mirror (Wayback) capture cited because the live NHHC DANFS page returns 404; a verbatim hazegray transcription corroborates the same 1981 DANFS Vol. 7 text. The companion NHHC entry for DE-278 records the same 23 June 1943 name transfer from the other hull's perspective (the Boston hull, not DE-228, had carried the Tisdale name for 18 days) - the hull-number bookkeeping difference is carried in gaps.

NavSource record for this hull: class Evarts, type GMT (diesel-electric tandem motor drive, short hull, 3" guns); keel laid 23 January 1943 by the Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Cal.; launched and christened 28 June 1943, sponsor Mrs. Elizabeth M. Limitations
NavSource is a curated specialist archive, not a government record - used for machinery detail, the CO table, and NHHC photo catalog numbers that the DANFS text omits; every major milestone date agrees with DANFS. Its sale date (4 November 1947, scrapped by Zidell Corp., Portland) conflicts with DANFS (sold 2 February 1948, scrapped the following month) - carried in gaps. Its spec block (19 kt, 11' draft, complement 15/183) conflicts with the DANFS spec block (21 kt, 8'3" mean, 156) - carried in gaps. No asbestos or materials information.

    Finding
Era/design inference: this hull is a Mare Island-built Evarts-class GMT-type escort, one of 97 hulls of the class built 1942-43 across four navy yards (Boston, Mare Island, Puget Sound, Philadelphia). The GMT plant is four GM 16-278A diesel engines with diesel-electric tandem drive - no boilers and no steam lines, so the boiler/fireroom lagging load of the steam-driven DE classes (TE/Buckley, WGT/Butler) does not apply. Period-standard asbestos applications for a 1943 combatant of this type were nonetheless the normal suite: diesel exhaust and hot-pipe lagging, machinery and compartment insulation, flange gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, and fireproofing. The builder yard is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (Mare Island Naval Shipyard, tier 2, with documented asbestos product identification and a mesothelioma appellate record for a yard welder). Documented machinery-disturbance events aboard this hull: Pearl Harbor repair period 13 February-early March 1944, 10-day DE-dock availability 19-29 May 1944, 20-day availability from 27 August 1944, and Leyte repairs June 1945 - insulation content of disturbed or renewed material is not recorded.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no source names asbestos aboard this hull, and the GMT diesel-electric plant removes the steam-system insulation most associated with DE asbestos content. Does not establish presence, quantity, location, or any individual exposure; NARA RG 19 contract/material specifications and Mare Island construction records are the open archival leads. The Mare Island yard record documents the facility, not this hull's material content.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material inventory, or litigation naming DE-33 or BDE-33 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped in 1948 - predating asbestos regulation and surviving-record practices - so no post-1970s documentation channel exists, and no preserved hull, museum, or wreck site survives to sample.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943 combatant is era-consistent with asbestos insulation and fittings. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility for any person.

Leads only - none of these records was retrieved or reviewed; NARA's public catalog could not be queried from this session (API returned empty responses), so digitization status of a DE-33 deck log is unverified. Content on this hull's materials is unknown and cannot be presumed.

Eight authenticated queries run across opinion and RECAP docket indexes; every hit classified a name or string collision: (1) 'USS Tisdale' opinions - 0 results; (2) 'Tisdale' opinions - 4,748 surname cases (People/State/Matter of Tisdale, Tisdale v. State, et al.), page-1 screened, zero ship references; (3) 'Tisdale' + asbestos opinions - 25 hits, all screened captions are person-name references inside asbestos/insurance litigation (Reichert v. Limitations
Coverage is limited to CourtListener-indexed opinions and RECAP dockets - unindexed state trial-court filings and settled MDL-875 claimant records are outside the index, and deep pages of the multi-thousand-hit surname sweeps were screened by caption pattern rather than individually. Absence of indexed litigation does not prove no claim was ever filed. Name collision surface noted: a second destroyer escort, DE-278, carried the name Tisdale for 18 days in June 1943 before the name was reassigned to DE-33 (she became HMS Keats, K.482); 'USS Tisdale' in litigation would nonetheless resolve to DE-33, the only hull commissioned under that name.
