- Documented for this hull: the first Tunny, laid down 10 November 1941 at Vallejo, Calif., by the Mare Island Navy Yard; launched 30 June 1942 (sponsor Mrs. Frederick G. Crisp); commissioned 1 September 1942, Lt. Comdr. Elton Watters Grenfell. Nine WWII war patrols including the sinking of Japanese submarine I-42; nine battle stars and two Presidential Unit Citations. Battle-damage overhaul and repairs at Hunters Point 17 September 1943-2 February 1944; battle-damage repairs and overhaul at Hunter's Point 26 September 1944-January 1945. Decommissioned 13 December 1945, Mare Island Group 19th Fleet. In commission in reserve 28 February 1952, decommissioned April 1952; recommissioned 6 March 1953 converted to carry guided missiles, reclassified SSG-282 - served as a Regulus-missile submarine nearly 12 years (Point Mugu development work; Hawaii-based deterrent patrols from 1957). Redesignated SS-282 May 1965; converted to troop-carrying submarine APSS-282 in 1966; unconventional-warfare operations off Vietnam from February 1967 (Operation Deckhouse VI); reclassified LPSS-282 on 1 January 1968 (DANFS reading; NavSource/navypedia read 1969 - logged). Decommissioned 28 June 1969; struck 30 June 1969; sunk as a target 19 June 1970.

- Construction at Mare Island Navy Yard (Nov 1941-Sep 1942), two documented Hunter's Point battle-damage overhauls (Sep 1943-Feb 1944; Sep 1944-Jan 1945), Mare Island inactivation/reserve custody (1945-52), the SSG conversion at Mare Island (1952-53), a documented Pearl Harbor drydocking (May 1963), an APSS conversion (1966, yard unnamed), and a Subic Bay drydocking (Dec 1967) define her asbestos-relevant disturbance windows - the widest span in the batch, crossing into the SUBSAFE era. As a diesel-electric fleet boat she carried no boilers or steam plant; era-standard asbestos applications for the type were diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, and insulation around galley/refrigeration equipment.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey or material list located for SS-282. Names era-standard applications for diesel-electric boats and the hull's documented yard events as disturbance pathways, not confirmed installed materials; establishes no quantities and no exposure for any individual. SSG/APSS conversion-yard detail incomplete; Subic Bay is outside the yard dataset.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - covering her 1941-42 construction, wartime overhauls, and most of her postwar conversion/maintenance era (she decommissioned June 1969, before the substitution era).

[5]Kase v. Metalclad Insulation Corp., Cal. Ct. App. (4th Dist.) 2021 (CourtListener opinions 4324658, 4332654) [court_record]
- Locator
- Opinion, specification-history discussion (SUBSAFE/MIL-I-24244)
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- A docketed asbestos personal-injury opinion recounts that after USS Thresher's 1963 loss the Navy created the SUBSAFE program, which issued procurement specification MIL-I-24244 covering asbestos-containing insulation for submarines - court-documented evidence that asbestos-containing insulation was specified in the submarine construction and maintenance regime. Tunny's documented maintenance events extend into the SUBSAFE era (Pearl Harbor drydock 1963; APSS conversion 1966; Subic Bay drydock 1967; service to June 1969), so the spec regime applied to her late-career availabilities.

- Navy submarine construction/maintenance trades, SUBSAFE era
- Limitations
- Documents the spec regime only; names no vessel as an exposure site and does not show the spec was invoked for any particular Tunny availability. Does not establish materials aboard this hull, exposure, causation, quantity, or eligibility.

- Finding
- The Gato class's documented ship-level asbestos landscape: Dryfka v. Trane US recites a Navy reservist's alleged asbestos exposure aboard USS Drum (SS-228) as a reserve instructor at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard May 1966-Feb 1967; Lyautey v. Alfa Laval attaches exposure sheets listing USS Cavalla (SS-244) among Navy jobsites (1954-1974 window); and the Galveston Daily News reported in 2020 that asbestos had been found in the public areas of museum boat Cavalla (SS-244), with an approved abatement. All are pleading-stage or press-stage items for sister hulls, not this vessel. No pleading naming this vessel was located.
