- Finding
- DANFS record for this hull: last of the 18 Forrest Sherman-class destroyers; laid down 30 September 1957 at Seattle by Puget Sound Bridge & Dredging Co.; launched 5 May 1958; commissioned 3 August 1959; homeported at Long Beach. Principal U.S. ship with Maddox (DD-731) in the 2-4 August 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident that produced the Tonkin Gulf Resolution; extensive Vietnam naval-gunfire-support and carrier-escort deployments through 1973. Documented yard periods at Long Beach Naval Shipyard: three-month overhaul from 18 December 1964; restricted availability February-March 1967; three-month restricted availability June-October 1970; six-month extensive overhaul from February 1972; and regular overhaul beginning 7 November 1977 'designed to completely renovate her entire engineering plant' - the whole of 1978 in overhaul, extended drydock on the 1,200-psi steam plant and hull preservation, San Diego mid-1979. Decommissioned 22 November 1982; stricken 13 February 1990; donated to the Bremerton Historic Ships Association 10 April 1991; museum at Bremerton, Wash.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and yard periods, not materials or asbestos content. The verbatim DANFS text is cited via the navysite.de mirror: hazegray's transcription exists but would not fetch in this session, and the live NHHC page returns 404 - carried in the ledger.

- Finding
- Contemporaneous local-press and trade-press coverage of this hull's second museum-era drydocking (February-March 2017, Lake Union Dry Dock Co., Seattle): 3/8-inch hull ultrasonically gauged, sea growth removed, hull abrasive-blasted and epoxy-recoated, starboard side refurbished; prior drydock 2001. Bremerton Historic Ships Association raised roughly $800,000-$1.2 million for the work. Confirms continuing museum status and a documented museum-era maintenance event.

[3]DANFS specifications block (Forrest Sherman class; four 1,200-psi Babcock & Wilcox boilers, Westinghouse turbines, ~70,000 shp, 2 shafts) + documented LBNSY overhaul record (ev-01) [other_primary]

- Finding
- Era inference: a late-1950s 1,200-psi steam destroyer would have carried asbestos boiler and turbine insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing as standard. Her documented engineering-plant overhauls at Long Beach Naval Shipyard - above all the November 1977-1978 'complete renovation' of the steam plant - are the periods when era insulation materials would have been disturbed and replaced under then-standard practice.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only. No ship-specific ACM survey, inventory, work package, or abatement record supports a product list for this hull. Yard periods are documented events; their asbestos scope is inference, and the record does not assert that asbestos was found, removed, or remains aboard.

- Finding
- Five docketed asbestos personal-injury complaints name this hull as an alleged exposure site, retrieved on authenticated CourtListener backfill. Davis v. GE (N.D. Cal.): complaint lists 'TURNER JOY (DD-951)' among vessels worked and states specifically 'On the TURNER JOY: Plaintiff worked on the force draft blowers.' Higgins v. A.W. Chesterton (N.D. Cal.): complaint jobsite list - 'U.S. Navy USS Turner Joy DD951; USS Hull DD 945; San Diego, CA; Long Beach, CA; Subic Bay, Philippines' as a boiler technician 1973-1977. Duenas v. GE (N.D. Cal., filed into MDL-875): complaint lists TURNER JOY (DD-951) among vessels worked at 'Shipyard, Long Beach, CA' 2/1977-6/1984 (plaintiff a DoD inspector). Abril v. Air & Liquid (S.D. Ill.): state-court complaint alleges Vicente Abril served aboard 'the USS Richard E. Kraus, the USS Turner Joy, and the USS Caloosahatchee' 1965-1984 'as a steward and seaman assisting with hands-on maintenance and repairs of the respective ship's equipment,' including engine and boiler rooms during drydock overhauls. Dizon v. GE (N.D. Cal., carried in MDL-875 doc. 6570-2): complaint exhibit exposure-history table lists 'TURNER JOY (DD-951)' under employer 'US Navy / Naval Repair Facility, Subic Bay, Philippines,' job title Electrician, dates 2/3/1957-7/1977, among the decedent's worksites.

- Plaintiffs Davis, Higgins, Duenas, Dizon (decedent's survivors), and Abril (decedent Vicente Abril) - Navy/shipyard personnel alleging service aboard or work on DD-951
- Limitations
- Pleading-stage allegations only: these are complaints (and complaint exhibits/history sheets) reciting plaintiffs' own assertions; no deposition, trial finding, or adjudicated result for this hull was located. Davis's force-draft-blower sentence and Abril's engine/boiler-room assignment are ship-specific allegations, not findings. Establishes nothing about quantity of material, actual exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- No asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated/trial-stage record for this hull was located (see search_ledger). The 2026-09-25 authenticated backfill corrected the earlier all-collisions read of the docket hits: five qualifying pleading-stage complaints are now documented at ev-05. Remaining 'Turner Joy'/'DD-951' hits are collisions or non-asbestos matters (criminal character letters, insurance exhibit, bankruptcy docket, MDL-875 index noise).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located adjudicated record does not prove absence of exposure or asbestos aboard - a 1959 steam destroyer preserved in original configuration is consistent with retained era materials. The five complaints are unadjudicated allegations. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present, does not address what may remain aboard, and does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
