- DANFS: originally slated as LST-967; 'redesignated ARB-9 on 14 April 1944 and named Ulysses on 28 April 1944'; laid down 2 November 1944 at Hingham, Mass., by the Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard; launched 2 December 1944; commissioned 27 December 1944; decommissioned 9 January 1945 at Baltimore; converted to a battle damage repair ship by the Maryland Drydock Co.; recommissioned 20 April 1945 (Lt. James L. Johnstone, USNR). May 1945 shakedown Chesapeake Bay; departed Norfolk 22 May with Patroclus (ARL-19) via Panama Canal and San Pedro; San Francisco 1 June; pontoon-mount failure forced return; sailed again 6 July via Pearl Harbor and Eniwetok; Saipan 6 August 1945, ComServDiv 103. Repair assignments at Saipan and Okinawa; Buckner Bay typhoon 9-10 October 1945 - collided three times with LST-717, lost three anchors, six-foot hole in one side. January 1946 Shanghai; March 1946 return via Panama Canal, Charleston, Jacksonville; reported to 16th Fleet 3 September; decommissioned 28 February 1947 at Green Cove Springs, Fla.; struck 1961.

- Limitations
- Transcription mirror of official DANFS text (HyperWar); live NHHC page for this hull not located this session. Narrative contains internal inconsistencies: 14 April 1944 reclassification vs the live NHHC LST-967 stub's 14 August 1944 (corroborated by BuShips/OpNav-derived shipscribe table), and a 'remainder of 1946' clause inconsistent with its own October-1945 paragraph (see correction row and gaps). - Finding
- The live NHHC DANFS record for LST-967 confirms this hull's redesignation as ARB-9 and naming as Ulysses, dated 14 August 1944 - establishing the single-hull identity behind both designations (LST-967 = Ulysses (ARB-9)).

- Finding
- The official BuShips roster annotates 'LST967 Now ARB9'. The Vol. 2 LST design table lists the LST932-979 construction block - which includes LST-967 - at 328 ft, 2,366 t light / 4,080 t trial, 11.6 kt, with two G.M. 12-278A diesel engines at 1,700 shp.

- Limitations
- Primary official document read via OCR text layer of the scan; the 12-278A engine model applies to the LST932-979 block as built and conflicts with NavSource's ship-page listing of 12-567A at 1,800 shp - carried in gaps. Design-table data predates the ARB conversion fit-out. Contains no asbestos content.

[7]Internal DANFS discrepancy - live NHHC LST-967 stub (14 Aug 1944) and BuShips/OpNav-derived shipscribe table (14 Aug 1944) vs transcribed DANFS Ulysses narrative (14 Apr 1944 / named 28 Apr 1944) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- NHHC LST-967 stub (live); HyperWar ARB-9 transcription; shipscribe ARB-1 construction table
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Reclassification date conflict resolved in favor of 14 August 1944: the live NHHC LST-967 stub and the shipscribe construction table compiled from BuShips and OpNav records both give 14 Aug 1944 (consistent with the FY44 ARB 7-12 program-wide reclassification block, all dated 14 Aug 44), while the transcribed DANFS Ulysses narrative gives 'redesignated ARB-9 on 14 April 1944 and named Ulysses on 28 April 1944'. This record carries 14 August 1944 as the documented date; the April dates are retained only as a noted discrepancy.

- Limitations
- The printed DANFS Vol. VII scan could not be checked (archive.org copy is borrow-controlled), so the April dates in the transcription cannot be confirmed as a print error; either way the discrepancy is within DANFS itself. Both dates are disclosed; the resolution rests on corroboration, not verification of the underlying document.

- Finding
- A diesel-propelled LST-hull auxiliary completed at a Massachusetts emergency yard in late 1944 and converted at a Baltimore commercial yard in early 1945 sits inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era. As a diesel ship she carried no steam plant - the boiler/steam-lagging pathway does not apply; era-standard applications for the type were engine-room and diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery and pipe gaskets, valve packing, deck coverings, and accommodation insulation. The ARB conversion's covered tank-deck machine shop (lathes, grinders, drills, metal cutters, welding machines) added period shop equipment whose friction and electrical-insulation materials were era-standard.

- Limitations
- Era inference only - no hull record establishes asbestos presence, quantity, product identity, or individual exposure aboard this vessel. The diesel plant narrows but does not eliminate the pathway; conversion-shop material content is unverified.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944-45), commissioned service (1944-47), and reserve-fleet lay-up (1947-61).
