Documented for this hull: completed in 1910 as General Weeks, a single-screw, steel-hulled harbor tug built at Shanghai, China, for the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps; operated out of Manila Bay on tug and towing services until transferred to the Navy 7 April 1930; classified YT-116, inactivated at Cavite Navy Yard 22 May 1930 for naval conversion; renamed Vaga 29 July 1931; commissioned at Cavite 1 August 1931, Boatswain Glen B. Swortwood in command. For the ensuing decade provided tug and tow services at Cavite, Sangley Point, and Manila, occasional Cavite-Manila ferry duty, and assisted Asiatic Fleet warships mooring and unmooring; on 2 December 1941 assisted USS Houston (CA-30) mooring after her accelerated Cavite overhaul. On the morning of 8 December 1941 (7 December east of the date line) she embarked the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines under Lt. Col. Curtis T. Beecher for Mariveles, Bataan. Cavite Navy Yard was nearly obliterated 10 December 1941; on 31 December Vaga was assigned to the Inshore Patrol for Corregidor's shoreline defense, operating out of Corregidor until scuttled 5 May 1942 to prevent capture. Stricken from the Navy Register 24 July 1942. One battle star for the Philippine Islands Operation (8 December 1941-6 May 1942). Spec block: displacement 529; length 148'6"; beam 26'; draft 12'10" (mean); complement 28.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - milestone dates agree with DANFS/NHHC where they overlap, but the builder firm name, the propulsion type 'steam', and the entire post-scuttling Japanese-service narrative (salvage, rename Taiyo Maru, loss ~15 January 1944 in the Borneo area) rest on NavSource alone and could not be corroborated: the NHHC/JANAC Japanese Naval and Merchant Shipping Losses list contains two Taiyo Maru losses (a 14,457-ton transport sunk May 1942; a 4,168-ton cargo ship sunk October 1944; neither near Borneo in January 1944) - see ev-12. Speed and armament are listed as unknown. No asbestos or material content.

Vessel-named muster rolls exist and are cataloged for this hull: 'Vaga (YT-116), 1/1/39-3/31/42' (NARA catalog marks the file unit available to access online). Muster rolls are the authoritative personnel record - they document the named crew population aboard Vaga quarter-by-quarter from January 1939 through March 1942, the period that ends with her scuttling. A companion index file unit 'USS T-1 (SST-1) to USS YMS-24' (NAID 118967608, RG 24 Index to Muster Rolls) covers this vessel's position in the muster-roll index.

Crew-disposition research path for this hull: a NARA catalog search on the vessel's name and hull number matches the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor (ADBC) 'World War II Prisoners of the Japanese' data file (NAID 2123836) and the RG 24 casualty-list file unit for the Philippine Islands Operation (NAID 631849172). Personnel ashore on Corregidor when the fortress surrendered on 6 May 1942 - the day after Vaga's scuttling - generally became prisoners of the Japanese; these records are the documented path for establishing the fate of Vaga's crew, which no located narrative source states.

    Finding
NARA's official asbestos-research guide states that 'the use of asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel from 1941-1961 is a frequently requested topic,' and directs researchers to Record Group 19 (Records of the Bureau of Ships) general, confidential, and secret correspondence arranged by Navy Filing Manual codes - where 'types of ships, ship classes, and individual ships are filed by ship's designation and hull designation.' For this hull the corresponding file code is YT116 within the RG 19 General Correspondence 1940-1945 series (Entries A1 1266-A through -P by file-code range; the C-S1 thru X52/S67 volume, A1 1266-M, is the alphabetical range covering YT designators). This is the documented repository where a ship-specific asbestos record for YT-116 would exist if any was ever filed.

A coal- or oil-fired steam harbor tug completed in 1910 and in U.S. Navy service 1931-1942 is a vessel type for which era-standard asbestos applications were boiler and steam-drum insulation, steam-line lagging between boiler and machinery spaces, valve and flange gaskets, and machinery packing - thermal insulation on a small, crowded steam plant worked daily in harbor service, including alongside Asiatic Fleet warships at Cavite.

Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, conversion work package, or maintenance record was located for YT-116. The 1910 build date precedes the heaviest naval asbestos era but steam-plant insulation of the period commonly contained asbestos; whether Vaga's 1930 naval conversion added or renewed asbestos materials is undocumented. NAME DISAMBIGUATION: the name Vaga was borne by two U.S. Navy harbor tugs. This record covers the first, YT-116 (1910-1942). The second, an Allaquippa-class district harbor tug, was laid down 21 March 1944 at Port Arthur, Texas, by Gulfport Boiler & Iron Works; launched 6 May 1944; reclassified YTB-374 15 May 1944; placed in service 31 May 1944; served the Fourteenth Naval District at Pearl Harbor, then San Diego; reclassified YTM-374 February 1962; stricken 1 October 1972; sold for scrap 11 September 1973. Any 'USS Vaga' hit in post-1944 records - including litigation, muster rolls, or veterans' claims - must be classified against the correct hull; the vast majority of postwar references will be YTB-374, not the 1942-scuttled YT-116.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, insulation material list, conversion/overhaul work package, abatement record, or verified litigation naming USS Vaga (YT-116) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: the CourtListener sweep is PARTIAL - the 'USS Vaga' opinion query ran and returned zero results, but the remaining three base queries ('USS Vaga' docket, 'YT-116' opinion, 'YT-116' docket) were blocked on repeated attempts over ~90 minutes by the fleet-wide pacing limiter (hourly share of the 1,400/day account quota); logged as blocked-in-part, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no vessel-specific asbestos marketing page; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is generic law-firm listicle content (asbestos-ships.com, asbestos.com, nemerofflaw.com) - excluded by source policy.

NavSource's salvage/rename/sinking narrative for this hull (ev-04) is therefore uncorroborated by the primary loss list and is carried as unverified secondary reporting only.
