- Bath Iron Works construction trades 1943-44; wartime and postwar crew (DANFS complement 336); naval-shipyard workers at Boston, Mare Island, Long Beach, and Puget Sound yard periods; General Metals scrapping workers 1975
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Documented yard periods (Boston Navy Yard fitting-out and 1944 repairs; Mare Island 1945 battle-damage rebuild, 1946 repairs, 1951 post-mining repairs and complete overhaul; Long Beach NSY 1966 repairs and 1968 overhaul; Puget Sound NSY 1970 inactivation) are events in the narrative - the asbestos scope of each is not stated and any insulation disturbance is inference. DANFS does not name the 1961 FRAM II yard (see ev-uss-walke-dd723-03). Wayback capture cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 (standing NHHC link rot).

[3]Hukkanen v. Air and Liquid Systems Corp., No. 2:17-cv-02227-JFW (C.D. Cal.), Defendant Foster Wheeler LLC's Notice of Removal, ECF No. 1 (filed 2017-03-22, 53 pp. incl. complaint exhibit); remanded to Los Angeles County Superior Court (BC651465) 2017-03-31 per Hukkanen, 2017 WL 1217075 (order not indexed on CourtListener - verified via quotation in later opinions incl. Sierra Club v. Exxon Mobil, N.D. Cal.) [court_record]

- Finding type

- Finding
- Docketed asbestos litigation names this hull: removal notice (NOS 368 P.I.: Asbestos) recites that the Los Angeles Superior Court complaint alleges plaintiff John Hukkanen 'was exposed to asbestos while serving as a machinist in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Somers and USS Walke from approximately 1960 through 1968' (Complaint para. 7), with further alleged exposure at Richfield, Gulf Oil, and Tosco/Phillips refineries 1968-1979. During 1960-1968 the only commissioned USS Walke was DD-723 (the first Walke, DD-34, was decommissioned in December 1919 and lost the name in 1933; the second, DD-416, was sunk in November 1942), so the allegation attaches to this hull. Removed by Foster Wheeler under 28 U.S.C. 1442(a)(1) federal-officer/federal-enclave theories; plaintiffs expressly disclaimed federal-enclave injuries; remanded to state court 31 March 2017 (2017 WL 1217075).

- Population
- John Hukkanen, USN machinist ca. 1960-1968 (alleged exposure aboard this hull); Mary Hukkanen (spouse, co-plaintiff)
- Limitations
- Pleading-stage allegation recited in removal papers - never adjudicated; remand resolved subject-matter jurisdiction only. Does not establish causation, quantify or confirm asbestos aboard, or identify which products were asbestos-containing. Post-remand state-court outcome not located. Hull attribution rests on the 1960-1968 service window (only commissioned Walke in that era), not an explicit hull number in the filing.

[4]Hukkanen v. Air and Liquid Systems Corp., No. 2:17-cv-02227-JFW (C.D. Cal.), Foster Wheeler LLC Notice of Removal, ECF No. 1, para. 6 (filed 2017-03-22) [court_record]

- Finding type
- litigation_product_id
- Finding
- Defendant product identification for this hull: Foster Wheeler's removal notice states 'Foster Wheeler has confirmed that it manufactured the economizers on the USS Walke,' offered as the factual basis for federal-officer removal - i.e., Foster Wheeler acknowledged its boilers/economizers/auxiliary equipment were aboard this hull (the 1960-1968 exposure window identifies DD-723).

- Limitations
- Party assertion in jurisdictional briefing, not an adjudicated finding; identifies the manufacturer of equipment aboard this hull but does not establish that the equipment contained or required asbestos, the quantity of any asbestos, or any individual exposure. Consistent with (not proof of) the class/era insulation pattern in ev-uss-walke-dd723-05.

- Finding
- Official Navy photograph captions document this hull's 1961 FRAM II modernization at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, California: NH 99813-99818 (11 October 1961, 'at the completion of her FRAM II modernization,' noting the fantail variable-depth sonar installation) and NH 99819-99821 (29 September 1961, interior piping detail photographed at Mare Island). DANFS records the FRAM II overhaul 'in 1961' without naming the yard; these captions establish the yard and completion date.

FRAM II modernizations class-wide disturbed original insulation, but the asbestos scope of this hull's specific overhaul is undocumented. [6]DANFS specifications block (Allen M. Sumner class; 34 kt; cpl 336) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Bath Iron Works record (OSHA-documented asbestos products incl. Kaylo pipe covering, asbestos felt, packing; NARA RG 19 General Information Books archival lead) [other_primary]

- Finding
- Era/class inference: an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer built 1943-44 at Bath Iron Works with a four-boiler steam plant (geared steam turbines, 60,000 shp, twin screws) was constructed inside the Navy's documented asbestos era and would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, steam-line lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing. Builder Bath Iron Works is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2 - asbestos products documented incl. Kaylo pipe covering, asbestos felt, loose packing). Her five documented major yard periods (Mare Island 1945 rebuild, 1951 post-mining overhaul, 1961 FRAM II; Long Beach NSY 1966 repairs and 1968 overhaul; Puget Sound NSY 1970 inactivation) all occurred in the pre-substitution era; the asbestos scope of each is undocumented. NARA RG 19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are an archival lead for hull-level specs.

- Finding
- CourtListener sweep complete: exact-name "USS Walke" returned zero indexed opinions and exactly one docket - Hukkanen v. Air and Liquid Systems Corp. (C.D. Cal. 2:17-cv-02227), resolved to verified document text (ev-02, ev-03). "DD-723" returned zero opinions and four docket hits, all name collisions: the MDL-875 parent docket (internal docket-number/text artifact, not a hull reference), Malibu Media v. John Does (copyright), United States v. Winner (criminal), and Easterday Ranches (bankruptcy). A bare "Walke" docket query returns >1,200 surname collisions (prisoner petitions, bankruptcies), confirming the name-collision landscape; only the exact-phrase "USS Walke" query is discriminating. The Hukkanen remand order (2017 WL 1217075) is not in the opinion index.
