    Locator
Waneta YT-384, specification line and two history paragraphs
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
A reproduced DANFS history says Waneta was laid down at Ira S. Bushey and Sons, Brooklyn, on 1943-09-08, launched 1943-12-24, and completed and delivered 1944-04-25. Redesignated YTB-384 on 1944-05-15, she served the Pacific Fleet actively until placed out of service in reserve at San Diego in March 1946. She returned to service in October 1953 for Sixth Naval District duty at Charleston, was redesignated YTM-384 in February 1962, was placed out of service early in 1974, was struck 1974-04-01, and was sold in February 1975.

    Limitations
The official NHHC Waneta page could not be fetched; this is an apparent DANFS transcription on a third-party host, with a visible typo in the class comparison and another in punctuation. Independently corroborated items have separate Navy rows. The text gives no asbestos material, maintenance scope, exposure, or causation; delivery does not prove formal commissioning.

    Finding
The official United States Pacific Fleet organization dated 1945-05-01 lists WANETA as YTB 384, confirming this hull in the wartime Pacific Fleet before the 1946 reserve period.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
GAO summarizes claims over WWII-era shipyard asbestos products, principally thermal insulation, and alleged worker exposure in public and private shipyards. This provides period context for a tug constructed in 1943-1944, not a finding about Waneta.

World War II; GAO report 1988
    Population
WWII shipyard workers in claims summarized by GAO; not Waneta workers
    Limitations
Program and era evidence only. GAO summarizes underlying litigation claims and a separate merits disposition, not a judicial exposure finding for Waneta. The cited claims involved other shipyards and contracts; GAO does not name Waneta, Ira S. Bushey and Sons, or a product installed on this hull. It proves no Waneta asbestos presence, dose, injury, or causation.

    Finding
A 1979 Navy letter reproduced in GAO HRD-80-2 reports asbestos applications in Navy ships and identifies asbestos thermal insulation in selected large harbor tugs YTB-817 through YTB-831 delivered in the 1970s.

    Population
Navy vessels and shipyard workers in GAO review, not Waneta crew
    Limitations
The listed YTB hulls were built about three decades after Waneta and are neither this hull nor established class sisters. The report cannot transfer their materials or quantities to Waneta. It establishes no individual exposure or causation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos document was located in the reviewed Waneta DANFS reproduction, NHHC Pacific Fleet roster and Zeus history, NAVSEA disposition table, NARA log guidance, or GAO reports; the materials found do not name an asbestos product aboard Waneta or a Waneta exposure finding.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA explains that harbor tugs commonly served as 'in service' district craft rather than commissioned commands, and their individual logs generally were not retained permanently; parent-command records and Zeus repair records are more promising archival leads for Waneta.

    Locator
RG 19 correspondence guidance; QM builder files; specifications and cartographic Hull Series sections
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's guide to asbestos research for Navy vessels through 1961 identifies Bureau of Ships RG 19 hull-designation correspondence, builder correspondence under QM filing codes, ship specifications, and hull-number engineering drawings as archival paths. For Waneta, YT/YTB-384 and QM/Ira S. Bushey and Sons are search leads, not retrieved file identifications.
