- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 14 May 1945 at Bath, Maine, by Bath Iron Works Corp.; launched 27 September 1945, sponsored by Mrs. Katherine Chubb Sheehan; commissioned at Boston Naval Shipyard 20 December 1945, Comdr. Don W. Wulzen in command. FRAM I conversion at New York Naval Shipyard 12 May 1961 - 4 May 1962 (ASROC launcher, DASH hangar/flight deck, enlarged CIC/sonar; after 5-inch mount removed). Collision with USS Barry (DD-933) 26 July 1964 with repair periods at Norfolk and Boston. Vietnam deployments 1966-67 (Traffic Cop/Sea Dragon) and June-July 1972 (NGFS I Corps, then Linebacker off North Vietnam). On 17 July 1972 two underwater explosions close aboard the port side severely damaged after fireroom, after engine room, and main control; towed to Subic Bay; Board of Inspection and Survey found her unfit for further service; decommissioned and struck from the Navy list 30 September 1972; sold to the Taiwan Navy 24 April 1973 for cannibalization and scrapping. Two battle stars for Vietnam service.

- Finding
- The ship's own 1972 command history documents: completion of 'an extensive four month overhaul' at Boston Naval Shipyard (1-16/17 January 1972) with 'major repairs in everything from the Engineering spaces to the anemometer'; WestPac transit via Panama Canal and Pearl Harbor; gunline duty off Vietnam from 7 July; Linebacker operations off North Vietnam from 16 July; on 17 July at 1316 two underwater explosions close aboard the port side caused 'extensive damage to the after fireroom, after engineroom and main control'; tow by USS Robinson (DDG-12), then USS Reclaimer (ARS-42), then USS Tawakoni (ATF-114) to Subic Bay; drydocked in AFDM-6 at Ship Repair Facility Subic Bay 25 July - 22 August; INSURV inspection under RADM John D. Bulkeley 22-25 August recommending decommissioning and striking; decommissioned at Subic Bay on the morning of 30 September 1972 (the covering letter and chronology carry 1 October as 'the date of decommissioning') and turned over to Ship Repair Facility Subic Bay for disposition.

- Limitations
- Primary-source contemporaneous record of yard periods, battle damage, INSURV, and disposal - contains NO mention of asbestos, insulation, lagging, or materials content; it documents WHERE work occurred, not what materials were disturbed or installed. Decommission date internally inconsistent (narrative 30 September vs. chronology/cover letter 1 October) - carried in gaps. OCR-quality scan; ship names contain minor OCR variants (Tawakoni rendered 'Towokoni'/'Tawokoni').

- Finding
- Era/design inference: a Gearing-class destroyer built at Bath Iron Works in 1945 with a four-boiler superheated-steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, steam-pipe lagging, turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets and packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Builder yard and both principal repair yards are documented in the Atlas yard dataset as asbestos-documented workplaces (Bath Iron Works: 1942 Drinker study found 'fairly serious dust risk' in pipe-covering shops; New York Naval Shipyard: Kaylo products and asbestos litigation; Boston Naval Shipyard: gasket-materials litigation). Documented yard periods aboard this hull: New York Naval Shipyard voyage repairs (Feb-Mar 1947) and FRAM I (May 1961 - May 1962); Boston Naval Shipyard commissioning and overhauls (Oct 1968 - spring 1969; Jul-Aug 1970; Sep 1971 - Jan 1972); SRF Subic drydocking (Jul-Aug 1972).

- Finding
- Litigation record recites class-level materials evidence for the Sumner/Gearing design group: 'an engineering drawing for the insulation and lagging of forced draft blower turbines for the class of destroyers (DD 692, USS Allen M. Sumner class), within which the USS Harlan Dickson fell, specifies the use of amosite felts and asbestos cloths' and quotes a report estimating 'a partial tally of the weight of the asbestos-containing thermal insulation and lagging products in the fire ... and engine rooms of a ship belonging to the USS Allen M. Sumner (DD 692) and USS Gearing (DD 710) classes of destroyers is 30.3 tons.'

- Litigation-record recital of an expert report and a Navy engineering drawing at CLASS level - the drawing covers the Sumner-class DD-692 machinery group shared by Gearing-class hulls; the 30.3-ton figure is an expert partial tally, not a classwide inventory and not an adjudicated finding; neither exhibit names DD-843. Underlying exhibits not retrieved. Class/era context only - never a ship-specific finding for this hull.

- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. For DD-843 the documented policies postdate her entire service life (decommissioned 1972, sold 1973) - era insulation practice applied throughout her career.

[8]CourtListener sweep for this hull: '"USS Warrington"' opinion search = 1 hit, name collision (John Warrington v. Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway, 901 F.2d 88 (7th Cir. 1990) - 'USS' is United States Steel, not the ship); Warrington v. 3M Co., No. 2:21-cv-03207 (E.D. Pa., memorandum ECF 297, Aug. 15, 2023, Kenney, J.) = plaintiff-surname asbestos action - exposure sites were aircraft carriers USS Saratoga, USS Constellation, USS Kitty Hawk at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard 1980-94, not this hull; opinion expressly notes no GE-linked asbestos exposure during plaintiff's 1969-71 Navy service; GE summary judgment granted [court_record]

- Finding type

- Finding
- Verified name collisions only: no qualifying asbestos litigation names DD-843. 'USS Warrington' exact-name opinion search returns a United States Steel railroad-injury appeal (plaintiff John Warrington). The asbestos action Warrington v. 3M (E.D. Pa. 2021-23, mem. ECF 297 by Kenney J., Aug. 15, 2023) is a plaintiff-surname case whose named exposure vessels are carriers (CV-60, CV-64, CV-66) at PNSY - the opinion expressly notes no GE-linked asbestos exposure during plaintiff's 1969-71 Navy service; GE won summary judgment on failure-to-warn/causation grounds (filed-document text verified).

- Sweep coverage: exact-name opinion index completed; hull-number ('DD-843') opinion queries, docket-level (type=r) queries, and the Warrington v. 3M RECAP docket were not reached - fleet pacing budget spent mid-session (see search_ledger sl-06). A complaint's vessel list not indexed by CourtListener would not surface; absence of a qualifying hit is a negative finding for the queried index, not proof no filing ever named the hull. Warrington v. 3M is a defense summary-judgment win - a merits-level negative for that plaintiff's GE theory, not exposure evidence for or against this hull (the hull is not named in it at all).

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-843: no hull ACM survey or abatement record (none expected post-disposal - hull cannibalized/scrapped in Taiwan from April 1973), no museum/operator hazmat disclosure (ship is not preserved), no materials mention in the ship's own 1972 command history, and no qualifying asbestos case names this hull in the opinion index queried (docket-level sweep blocked mid-session - see sl-06). Open-web hits for 'USS Warrington DD-843 asbestos' are law-firm marketing pages listing the hull by name only - excluded per source rules.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1945 steam-plant destroyer is era-typical for ACM (see ev-04/-05), and BuShips contract specifications, the 1961-62 FRAM work package, and the August 1972 INSURV material survey likely sit in undigitized NARA RG 19 series. Does not establish or defeat any claim of individual exposure or legal eligibility.
