    Finding
Published federal Report and Recommendation names this hull in asbestos personal-injury litigation: the estate of William F. Henry (executrix Judith E. Henry) alleged he developed mesothelioma from Navy asbestos exposure as a machinist. The R&R recites from the record: Henry enlisted 22 July 1953; 'he did not board the U.S.S. William R. Rush until December 27, 1955' and 'his service aboard the U.S.S. Rush ended on April 9, 1957'; 'Mr. Henry's only contact with Warren pumps was during this approximately sixteen-month period when he served aboard the U.S.S. Rush'; Warren Pumps conceded Henry's workspace aboard the ship contained three Warren pumps (main condenser circulating pump; freshwater pump; fire and bilge pump); shipmate Charles Newbold's testimony established that Henry worked on the fire and bilge pump and was present when others worked on pumps, and 'generally described procedures used to cut through asbestos insulation and mix asbestos powder for all pumps.' Disposition: the R&R RECOMMENDED summary judgment for Warren Pumps on substantial-factor grounds (no evidence of frequency of asbestos work on Warren products; defense expert opined individual packing/gasket changes 'do not constitute substantial exposures') and on the bare-metal defense (no evidence Warren supplied the asbestos-containing components). Maritime law applied.

Navy machinist aboard USS William R. Rush Dec 1955-Apr 1957 (mesothelioma decedent); shipmate deponent Charles Newbold
    Limitations
Report-and-Recommendation stage (magistrate recommendation, not an adjudicated trial finding): the exposure allegation is recited from pleadings and deposition testimony and was never adjudicated; the recommended disposition is a merits-level negative for this plaintiff as to Warren Pumps (defense SJ) - it establishes that this hull was named and that asbestos-work testimony aboard it was of record, not that exposure occurred or that Warren products caused injury. R&R text verified via Lawyers Weekly digest quoting the document; the underlying R&R PDF and the district court's adoption order were not retrieved (D.R.I. RECAP coverage pending); complaint ship-list retrieved only to tag-along caption level on the MDL master docket.

    Finding
Earlier procedural stage of the Henry matter: Buffalo Pumps removed the estate's Rhode Island Superior Court complaint to federal court under federal-officer jurisdiction (28 U.S.C. 1442), asserting a colorable federal-contractor defense - that it manufactured and supplied pumps for Navy ships pursuant to vessel-specific contracts and detailed Navy specifications, direction, and control. The court denied the plaintiff's remand motion, adopting the Hagen v. Benjamin Foster (E.D. Pa. 2010) standard. The digest recites that the complaint alleged the decedent 'was exposed to asbestos while working as a machinist in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1956.'

    Limitations
Removal-jurisdiction opinion only - resolves forum, not exposure; the ship is not named in the digested excerpt (the '1953 to 1956' Navy-machinist allegation overlaps Henry's Rush service 1955-57). Establishes the case's removal posture and the federal-contractor defense asserted for Navy-supplied pumps; establishes nothing about materials aboard this hull.

    Finding
Era/yard/design inference for this hull: a Gearing-class destroyer built 1944-45 with a four-boiler superheated-steam plant (4 B&W boilers; GE geared turbines; 60,000 shp) would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation - boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-pipe lagging, turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets and packing, fireproofing, and accommodation insulation. At class level, the Goodrich v. Air & Liquid Systems omnibus opinion (E.D. Va. 4:17-cv-00009, ECF 171, Sept. 28, 2018) recites an engineering drawing for insulation/lagging of forced-draft blower turbines 'for the class of destroyers (DD 692, USS Allen M. Sumner class)' specifying amosite felts and asbestos cloths, and quotes an expert partial tally of 30.3 tons of asbestos-containing thermal insulation and lagging in Sumner/Gearing-class fire and engine rooms - shared machinery design, not a hull inventory. Her documented yard periods include the 1951-52 Boston radar-picket conversion and the 1964-65 ten-month FRAM overhaul at New York Naval Shipyard - events where insulation disturbance was era-standard but is not hull-documented.

    Finding
Builder-yard documentation overlapping this hull's construction window: an Owens-Illinois industrial-health survey at Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock, Kearny, NJ (30 August-2 September 1944) documented insulator work with asbestos pipe covering (Johns-Manville Superex) and boiler insulation in confined shipyard spaces, with dust counts during cutting and fitting. DD-714's keel was laid at this yard on 15/19 October 1944 - weeks after the survey - so the record documents asbestos product use at the yard while this hull was on the ways.

Program-level asbestos policy context for this hull's service era: GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and that standing policy (1975) removed it only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - meaning original-era insulation typically remained in place for decades unless a yard period disturbed it.

Rush x2; Sioux Falls Kenworth v. Isuzu affidavit; Scalia v. Bene Market attorney appearances; Motors Liquidation, Kars 4 Kids, Waldner, Chado text matches). '"USS Rush"' opinions: 0. '"USS Rush" asbestos' dockets: 0. Hull-number opinions '"DD-714" OR "DDR-714"': 0. Hull-number dockets '"DD-714" OR "DDR-714"': 5 hits, all text-fragment noise (DD-714 appearing inside unrelated exhibit/filing text - Global Brokerage, Giampaolo v. McCann, Keys bankruptcy, Wonser v. Norman, Saki v. Norman), none asbestos or vessel-related. Korean-name opinion sweep '"Kang Won"/"ROKS Kang Won"': broad-OR variant returned 23,688 unfiltered asbestos opinions (0 of top 20 mentioning the name - query parsed 'asbestos' as standalone OR term); tight phrase query '"Kang Won" asbestos' blocked by fleet pacing at cutoff (2 attempts over ~8 minutes) - recorded as uncompleted, not a negative result.

    Limitations
CourtListener indexes a subset of federal/state opinions and federal dockets; unindexed state-court filings, most trial-level dockets, and settled MDL-875 claimant records are outside coverage. Exact-name/hull searches cannot catch filings that name the vessel only in OCR'd exhibits not surfaced as snippet text, or ROK-custody litigation in Korean courts. The MDL-875 hit's match position is inside attachment 8412-1's 15-page OCR text beyond the 500-char snippet window. The Korean-name phrase query was not completed (fleet pacing); coverage there remains open rather than negative.
