    Finding
DANFS record for this hull: named for Lt. Comdr. Jack William Wintle, USN (b. 18 April 1908, Pittsburg, Kan.; USNA 1932), killed aboard San Francisco (CA-38) on Callaghan's staff during the night action off Savo Island 12-13 November 1942, Naval Battle of Guadalcanal; posthumous Navy Cross. Hull laid down 1 October 1942 at Mare Island Navy Yard as BDE-25, allocated to the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease; launched 18 February 1943 (DANFS: sponsor unknown); reallocated to the U.S. Navy 4 June 1943; named Wintle 14 June 1943 when DE-266 was allocated to the Royal Navy as her replacement (DE-266 became HMS Capel); commissioned 10 July 1943, Lt. Comdr. Leonard W. Bailey, USNR. Pacific service: Pearl Harbor convoys Oct 1943; Fiji/Ellice runs and Gilbert Islands support (Operation Galvanic) Nov-Dec 1943; 3 January 1944 collision with Dempsey (DE-26) during fueling practice - hull opened starboard at frame 40, degaussing coil broken, return steam line severed; repairs at Pearl Harbor to 11 January; Operation Flintlock (Marshalls) Feb 1944; Solomons-Admiralties escort Mar-Sep 1944; Palau patrol (Kossol Passage) Sep-Nov 1944; Saipan Patrol and Escort Force Dec 1944-Feb 1945; Marshalls-Gilberts Escort Force Feb-Jun 1945 incl. gunfire exchange with Wotje shore batteries 2 April and Jaluit evacuation cover 5-6 May; escorted damaged Hazelwood (DD-531) and Rathburne (APD-25) Ulithi-Eniwetok late May; hunter/killer group with Kassan Bay (CVE-69) to 8 July; returned to San Francisco 26 July; ammunition offloaded at Mare Island, repairs at Hunters Point, in drydock on V-J Day 15 August. Placed out of commission 15 November 1945, berthed Mare Island; struck from the Navy list 28 November 1945; sold for scrap to Union Minerals & Alloys Corp. 25 August 1947. Three battle stars, WWII.

Mare Island Navy Yard construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew (design complement 156); Pearl Harbor and Hunters Point repair workers
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. DANFS lists the launch sponsor as unknown - a period Mare Island yard newspaper caption identifying Mrs. A. M. Street is carried as a documented conflict in gaps. Decommissioning (15 Nov) and disposal dates differ in secondary compilations - carried in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

[2]USNI Naval History, 'Part IV - A Matter of Class' (Aug. 1995): wartime DE machinery symbols - GMT = General Motors tandem drive diesels in short-hull (289 ft) ships = Evarts class (DE-1/50, 256/280, 301/315, 516/530); + DANFS specifications block (Evarts class; 21.5 kt trial); + Atlas shipyard dataset, Mare Island Naval Shipyard record (tier-2 asbestos-era yard) [other_primary]

    Finding
Era/yard inference: an Evarts-class (GMT-type) destroyer escort built 1942-43 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel-electric ship - engine and exhaust insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, fireproofing, and deck coverings - but no boiler or turbine lagging; builder Mare Island Navy Yard is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 2: asbestos-era products incl. Unibestos, Marinite, Transite, Kaylo, Careytemp documented in the yard's 1998 disposal EIS/EIR industrial-waste inventory, and a mesothelioma litigation record for a Mare Island welder 1976-94).

    Population
Mare Island Navy Yard construction trades 1942-43; crew 1943-45
    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The diesel-electric plant means the largest asbestos categories of steam ships (boiler and steam-line insulation) do not apply, though DANFS records an auxiliary 'return steam line' aboard this hull (limited steam piping). Yard-level documentation describes the shipyard's materials and later workers, not materials installed on DE-25; does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Archival leads for this hull: Wintle's October 1945 war diary exists in NARA's digitized WWII War Diaries series (an image of the 'USS WINTLE - War Diary, 10-1-31-45' cover page circulates via DPLA/Wikimedia Commons); WWII-era deck logs are held in NARA RG24 (logbooks) holdings; NARA RG19 'General Information Books' may hold per-vessel material specifications for this hull.

    Limitations
Archival leads only - item-level retrieval not performed; no war-diary, deck-log, or GIB content was reviewed, and nothing in these holdings is asserted here about asbestos materials aboard. The war-diary cover image confirms the file unit exists; its contents are unread.

  4. [4]CourtListener API v4 litigation sweep for 'Wintle' / 'DE-25' (type=o opinion index and type=r RECAP dockets), via authenticated fleet helper [court_record]
    Locator

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
CourtListener sweep located no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull. Opinion index (type=o): exact-name 'USS Wintle' returned 0 hits; 'Wintle' returned 68 hits - every result on the ranked first page is a surname or attorney-name collision in unrelated litigation (Wintle v. Martin, Or. Ct. App. 2025; Wintle-Butts v. Career Service Review Office, Utah Ct. App. 2013; Wintle v. Phoenix Development Group, Fla. 2011; Appeal of Wintle, N.H. workers' comp 2001; Wintle v. Wright, Me. 1955; and bankruptcy matters with attorney Keri L. Wintle of record, Bankr. D. Mass. / 1st Cir. BAP) - none vessel-related, none asbestos. Any opinion naming the vessel would contain 'Wintle'; none does. Hull-number ('DE-25') and RECAP docket (type=r) queries could not be completed - the fleet-wide request budget stayed spent across ~2.5 hours of spaced retries (one attempt reached CourtListener but timed out server-side); logged as blocked, not as negative. A supplementary non-CourtListener public-source screen (ded.uscourts.gov, Justia, govinfo via web search) found only the same surname collisions and no asbestos case naming the vessel.

    Limitations
Sweep is PARTIAL: opinion index covered (exact name = 0; surname = all collisions) but RECAP dockets and the bare 'DE-25' identifier query were never reached - unindexed pleadings, state-court filings, MDL-875 complaint text, and sealed/settled matters remain unsearched for this hull. A litigation index is not exhaustive even when complete; absence of a located opinion does not prove no suit ever named the vessel.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-25: no hull ACM survey or abatement disclosure exists in public sources (hull scrapped 1947-48; no museum custodian to publish restoration disclosures), the NHHC Online Library lists the hull with no active photo/documentation page, and the CourtListener opinion-index sweep located no asbestos opinion naming this vessel (RECAP docket expansion blocked by fleet budget - see ev-04). 'USS Wintle | DE 25' appears on law-firm asbestos marketing ship lists - excluded per source rules and carried as context only.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard materials would be expected by class/era inference (ev-02) but nothing ship-specific establishes their presence, quantity, or condition; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
