NavSource's live page for this hull records: laid down 21 May 1941 by Frank L. Sample, Jr., Boothbay Harbor, ME; launched 17 February 1942; completed 29 May 1942; struck from the Naval Register 3 July 1946; transferred to the War Shipping Administration in January 1947; registered in 1948 to Felice Golino of Patterson, LA as the fishing boat Silver Liner; fate unknown. The page's specification block lists: displacement 270 t. (1948 - 225 t.), length 136 ft (1948 - 124.7 ft), beam 24 ft 6 in (1948 - 24.4 ft), draft 8 ft (1948 - 11.3 ft), speed 15 kts, complement 32 (1948 - five), armament one 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts, and two depth charge projectors, and propulsion two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines with Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear on two shafts. Call sign Nan-Able-Jig-Yoke; Silver Liner call sign (1948) William-Xray-Jig-Charlie. The page states: 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-104', and shows no photograph of the hull.

    Limitations
NavSource is a live secondary photo-archive compilation, not an official registry. It supports the stated timeline, specification block, merchant-registry details, and call signs only; it styles 29 May 1942 'Completed' rather than 'Commissioned', its spec block conflicts with its own class-index figures (270 t vs 320 t; 15 kts vs 12 kts designed; 32 vs 33 complement; 8 ft vs 6 ft 1 in draft - carried in gaps), and it contains no asbestos, survey, abatement, product, or exposure evidence. The Silver Liner registry detail is not independently verified against a merchant register.

U.S. Navy YMS-104 crew whose service is recorded in the indexed logbooks (1942-46)
    Limitations
This is a finding aid showing indexed coverage spans of deck logs, not the logs themselves; it does not establish specific events, locations, or activities, and the logbooks were not reviewed (they remain undigitized - a box-level NARA request is the open lead). It establishes no asbestos or exposure fact.

The U.S. Fleet 'Composition of Task Forces' series (Headquarters of the Commander in Chief, U.S. Fleet; F-20 Combat Intelligence Division; declassified Map Room papers hosted by the FDR Presidential Library) places YMS-104 under Task Force 02, Eastern Sea Frontier, across eleven editions: 5 May 1943 in the frontier-wide 'YMS Boats' pool (YMS list including 104); 5 August 1943, 2 September 1943, and 7 October 1943 under the 02.5 Chesapeake Group block (R.Adm. H.F. Leary; Chesapeake Ship Lane Patrol / Naval LDF 5 ND / Coastal Pickets); 4 November 1943 under 02.5.3 (Lt. Comdr. Cutting), a subsection of the Chesapeake Group (02.5, R.Adm. D.M. LeBreton); 2 December 1943, 6 January 1944, and 3 February 1944 under 02.3 New York Group, R.Adm. E.J. Marquart (NY Ship Lane Patrol / Naval LDF 3 ND); and 2 March 1944, 6 April 1944, and 4 May 1944 again in the Chesapeake Group column (LeBreton). By the 1 June 1944 edition YMS-104 no longer appears anywhere in the Eastern Sea Frontier listing, and she is absent from subsequent 1944 editions checked.

U.S. Navy YMS-104 crew during Eastern Sea Frontier assignment (May 1943 - May 1944 documented)
    Limitations
These are fleet-organization snapshots, not ship logs: they establish group assignment on each edition's date, not continuous station, and not duties actually performed (the section headers - 'Chesapeake Ship Lane Patrol', 'Naval LDF', 'Coastal Pickets' - describe the group's mission set, not an individual order to this hull). The May 1943 listing places YMS-104 in a frontier-wide YMS pool with no geographic group shown. Absence from the June 1944 and later editions does not establish where she went. The FDR Library hosts multiple editions per MR box PDF; later-1944 editions were checked for the string '104' with no qualifying hit, and the series was not exhaustively read page-by-page. Scanned-image legibility is good on the pages cited; each cited page was rendered and read visually during this pass.

    Finding
The Naval Marine Archive (Canadian Collection) Yard Minesweepers table lists 'YMS 104 | Frank L. Sample | Boothbay Harbor ME | 136 [ft] | 320 [tons] | delivered 29-May-42 | Struck 1946' - independently corroborating the builder, location, delivery date, and striking year. The companion Frank L. Sample shipyard page repeats the delivery (29-May-42) and 'Struck 1946' for this hull (listed at '278d' burden there) and documents the yard lineage: established 1840 by Cyrus McKown, later the Townsend Marine Railway, then the Atlantic Coast Company in 1917; acquired by Sample in 1939 and sold in 2004; located at 120 Commercial Street, now the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard. Sample's yard built at least YMS 104-106 and YMS 226-234 plus ATR tugs for the Navy.

    Finding
The HyperWar mirror of Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945 (Minecraft section) carries a YMS class entry and a fleet table row for YMS-104 with commissioning notation '1942-5' and no loss dagger - consistent with survival through the war. The class note records the wood-hulled type, 481 U.S. ships of like characteristics, the stack-appearance groups (YMS-1 through 134 two stacks, which includes this hull), service-craft origin, WWII inshore sweeping ahead of amphibious assaults, and Ruff (MSCO-54, ex-YMS-327) as the last of the type struck November 1969.

    Finding
NavSource's Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper index establishes the class context and this hull's place in it: 561 wooden-hulled minesweepers of the type were built at 35 yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, four Great Lakes) in the spring 1942 - spring 1945 window; all 481 U.S. ships of the type shared the same general characteristics; YMS-1 through 134 had two stacks (the first/Mk I appearance group, which includes this hull); originally rated as service craft, they did WWII inshore sweeping ahead of amphibious assaults; survivors were reclassified AMS and given names in 1947, became MSC(O) in 1955 and MSCO in 1967; Ruff (MSCO-54, ex-YMS-327), last of the type in U.S. service, was struck November 1969.

    Finding
NARA's deck-log research guidance explains the record path for this hull's logs: deck logs of commissioned Navy ships are permanent records held in Record Group 24, with 1941-and-later logs generally at College Park, Maryland, and finding aids (including Special List #44) indexing coverage by ship number. NARA also notes that only some Navy records have been digitized and many remain in paper or microfilm. This frames both the indexed YMS-104 coverage (ev-03) and the meaning of the online catalog's failure to surface digitized hull records.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos litigation result was located in this pass. The four mandatory authenticated CourtListener base searches were attempted through the approved helper. Two completed: the exact-name opinion query ("USS YMS-104", type=o, limit 20) returned count 2 - both hits classified as name collisions (Alfred Lee Stone v. Sgt. Allen Baskin, Tex. App. 2014, and Tyrone Berry v. State, Tex. App. 2015; Texas appellate records with no vessel, Navy, or asbestos content); and the exact-name docket query ("USS YMS-104", type=r, limit 20) returned count 1516 on loose token matching - none of the 20 returned records contains the literal string 'YMS-104' (verified by field scan), so all 20 page hits are classified as name collisions. The two hull-number base queries ("YMS-104", type=o and type=r) and the asbestos-qualified variant authorized by the docket overflow ("USS YMS-104" asbestos, type=r) were repeatedly declined by the authenticated helper's fleet-wide pacing gate across more than an hour of spaced attempts; those are access gaps, not zero-result findings. A separate secondary-web sweep for asbestos litigation naming this hull surfaced no qualifying case.

The two hull-number base queries and the asbestos-qualified docket variant returned pacing stand-down rather than results across spaced retries spanning >60 minutes; they are access gaps, not negative findings. No further variants were run: the authorized subset variant was itself pacing-blocked.
