Sample, Jr., Boothbay Harbor, ME; launched 10 March 1942; completed 17 July 1942; struck from the Naval Register 1 May 1946; transferred to the War Shipping Administration in September 1947; 'Fate unknown.' Specifications: displacement 270 t.; length 136'; beam 24' 6"; draft 8'; speed 15 kts.; complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth charge projectors; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. NavSource notes: 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-105.'

Frank L. Sample yard workforce (1941-42); wartime crew (~32)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation of Navy-record data, not a primary registry; milestone dates track official records and are corroborated by uboat.net and the shipbuildinghistory.com YMS table. The 'Fate unknown' note is superseded by the postwar wreck documentation in ev-04/ev-05. Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
NARA holds digitized muster rolls for this hull spanning 1 August 1942 - 31 March 1946, effectively the entire U.S. Navy service period. Muster rolls record personnel assignments - names, ratings, and dates aboard - making this the primary crew-population document for the hull: every sailor who served aboard is named. Catalog search also surfaced wartime record mentions of YMS-105 inside Eastern Sea Frontier and Commander Inshore Patrol 3rd Naval District (Ambrose Section) war diaries, and in the USS Demand (AMC-74) logbook for May-August 1943.

    Limitations
Archival lead: the rolls document personnel, not materials or conditions - no asbestos content, and the 136 images were not transcribed page-by-page this session. They establish that a definable crew population (~32 per NavSource class figure) existed aboard, but establish no exposure. No separate deck-log file unit titled for this hull was located in catalog search (see gaps).

Class documentation: 'The wood-hulled YMS proved to be one of the U.S. Navy's more durable and versatile types through a quarter-century of service.' All 481 USN ships of the type shared the same general characteristics; YMS-1 through -134 carried two stacks (this hull is within that appearance group). Used 'during World War II for inshore sweeping to prepare the way for amphibious assaults.' Class specifications per the table: displacement 320 tons (full); length 136'; beam 24'6"; draft 6'1"; speed 13 knots; armament 1 3"/50, 2 20mm, 2 depth charge tracks + 2 extensions, 2 depth charge projectors; complement 4 officers, 29 crew; diesel engines, twin screws, 500 h.p.

Class-level table only - the compilation carries no individual page for YMS-105 (URL pattern returns 404). Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Academic wreck documentation for this hull: the thesis's Lake Union wreck inventory lists entry 26, 'YMS 105 (Gypsy Queen)', at 47 37.955 N, 122 19.762 W, 136 ft, wood construction, annotated 'WWII minesweeper, intact' - one of the identified historic wrecks in the survey. Narrative section 6.3.2.3 states the YMS-105 'was completed in 1942 and served as part of the Eastern Sea Frontier patrolling and sweeping the east coast of the United States from Canada to Florida,' that after military service she 'was decommissioned and changed owners and names many times, eventually ending up being purchased and registered by Thomas Stanly Hill in the late 1950's as the Gypsy Queen,' and that she 'appears to have sunk at its moorage in South Lake Union in 40 feet of water.'

    Limitations
The wartime-service and ownership narrative inside the thesis is sourced to DCS Films (2013), a private dive-videographer site - the service-history chain is effectively single-source. The wreck inventory table (position, dimensions, 'intact' condition) reflects the thesis's own fieldwork. No asbestos content; documents wreck existence and condition, not materials.

    Finding
Postwar chain for this hull: the Navy sold the ship after the war; she changed hands several times (dcsfilms reports ~13 ownership exchanges, USCG official number 289689, prior civilian name Emerson). In 1958 Thomas Stanley Hill and wife Alice purchased the vessel in Washington state, renamed her Gypsy Queen, and USCG-registered her 29 January 1963 at Juneau, Alaska; the plan was conversion to a fish-processing plant towed to Alaska. She 'sank at her dock on Lake Union' before the plan was carried out (lakeunionhistory); sinking date is undocumented - 'It is not known (yet) when the Queen sank' (dcsfilms) - but a Seattle Times photo caption dated 8 September 1968 ('Gypsy Queen Readied for her Last Voyage') shows her still afloat that month. The wreck sits upright in about 40 feet at the south end of Lake Union and is described by divers as a 'fully-intact,' 'well-preserved' example of the class.

    Finding
A wood-hulled diesel motor minesweeper completed in 1942 under Bureau of Ships-era standards sits inside the fleet-wide window in which GAO documents Navy use of asbestos insulation aboard ships. For a small diesel service craft of this type and period, era-consistent asbestos-relevant applications were diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and fire-resistive joiner/insulation panels. She carried no steam plant - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway that dominates the asbestos load of larger combatants does not apply.

    Finding
CourtListener base-query sweep partially completed 2026-10-04: the exact-name opinion query returned one hit - United States v. Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey, 81 F. Supp. 183 (S.D.N.Y., filed 3 Dec 1948), an admiralty collision case arising from the 16 December 1942 collision between Navy minesweeper YMS-12 and the tanker John Worthington in the New York harbor approaches. That is a name collision on a different hull and non-asbestos subject matter; it does not concern YMS-105. The exact-name docket query returned zero results. No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull was located in the completed queries.

    Limitations
PARTIAL coverage only: the two hull-number base queries ("YMS-105" opinion, "YMS-105" docket) were repeatedly blocked - the fleet-wide helper pace budget (~58 req/hr shared) stayed spent across ~95 minutes of spaced retries on 2026-10-04. Blocked is not a negative result: rerun 'YMS-105' type=o and type=r when a pace slot opens. The completed pair covers exact-name matching only. Collision hit concerns YMS-12, not this hull; its 1942 NY-approaches setting is era-consistent with this hull's documented 3rd-ND/ESF operating area but establishes nothing about this vessel.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum/official asbestos statement, or official history entry covering materials was found for this hull in the sources searched (see search_ledger). The completed CourtListener queries surfaced no qualifying case (one name-collision hit on YMS-12). The hull survives intact as a documented submerged wreck - original-era materials, if present aboard, remain undocumented either way. Secondary web sweep surfaced no law-firm or marketing asbestos claims specific to YMS-105.
