- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's live YMS-109 page identifies the vessel as Brambling (MSC(O)-42), formerly Brambling (AMS-42) and YMS-109. It states that Burger Boat Co., Boothbay Harbor, Maine laid her down 21 May 1941; she launched 16 May 1942; completed 4 September 1942; was commissioned USS YMS-109; was named and reclassified Brambling (AMS-42) on 1 September 1947; reclassified MSC(O)-42 on 7 February 1955; and struck from the Naval Register on 1 November 1959. The page lists fate unknown, call sign November-Alpha-Papa-India, complement 32, and two 880-bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines with Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear on two shafts.

- Ship's company (NavSource lists complement 32).
- Limitations
- NavSource is a live secondary photo-archive compilation, not a primary construction or personnel record. Its line says 'Burger Boat Co., Boothbay Harbor, ME,' and that location has not been independently verified in the authoritative sources retained here. The page contains no asbestos statement and its diesel specification cannot establish the presence or absence of asbestos-containing materials.

- Limitations
- This is a custody/coverage index, not the deck logs themselves. The indexed coverage is not a commissioning or decommissioning date and does not identify asbestos, products, exposure, repair work, or causation. The logs were not examined for this record.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- GAO reported in 1979 that it reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, including use of asbestos in Navy ships and the cost of removal. It describes the Navy's 1975 policy of replacing damaged or repair-affected asbestos insulation with nonasbestos material and its 1979 selective-replacement policy for high-maintenance areas.

- 1975-1979 policy period; report published 1979
- Population
- Workers at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards; Navy ships discussed at program level.
- Limitations
- This is Navy-wide, later-era program evidence, not a survey or material record for YMS-109/Brambling. It does not establish that asbestos was installed, remained aboard, was disturbed, or exposed anyone on this hull.

[5]CourtListener authenticated-search helper diagnostic, batch 8785 (2026-10-04); see search_ledger. [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger entries sl-uss-yms-109-04 through sl-uss-yms-109-07; helper diagnostic: 'COURTLISTENER PACING: the fleet-wide request budget is momentarily spent'.
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- The required authenticated CourtListener sweep was not completed. The first base query, exact-name opinion search for Brambling (limit 20), was blocked by the fleet-wide pacing limiter before an API request was issued. Per pacing guidance, the exact-name docket and YMS-109 opinion/docket base queries were not run; no asbestos-qualified variants were run. Therefore this record makes no negative litigation finding.

- Limitations
- A blocked search is an access gap, not evidence that no case exists. This row does not establish the presence or absence of asbestos litigation, exposure, causation, liability, or legal eligibility.

[6]Batch 8785 research ledger: NARA Special List 44, live NavSource YMS-109 page, GAO HRD-80-2, and CourtListener helper status (2026-10-04). [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger entries sl-uss-yms-109-01 through sl-uss-yms-109-07.
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, product identification, or materials specification naming YMS-109/Brambling was located in the public authoritative sources retained for this record. NARA's unexamined deck logs remain the principal hull-specific archival lead.

- Documentation level

- Accessed

- Study period
- Research performed 2026-10-04
- Limitations
- This is a bounded negative search result, not proof that asbestos was absent aboard the hull. CourtListener coverage is incomplete because shared pacing blocked the first query, and unexamined deck logs or nonpublic records may contain relevant information.
