    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
NavSource's live YMS-11 page identifies the hull as a YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper, laid down 18 April 1942 by Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, New York; launched 20 July 1942; completed 6 August 1942; struck from the Naval Register 19 June 1946; and transferred to the State Department Foreign Liquidation Commission in December 1947, with fate unknown. Its specification block lists 270 tons displacement, 136-foot length, 24-foot-6-inch beam, 8-foot draft, 15-knot speed, complement 32, one 3-inch/50 dual-purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors, and two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines with Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear on two shafts. It gives the call sign Nan-Able-Queen-Item and names LT John J. McCourt, USNR, commanding officer from January through December 1945.

    Population
Henry B. Nevins, Inc. construction trades (1942); U.S. Navy YMS-11 crew; Foreign Liquidation Commission custody (1947)
    Limitations
NavSource is a live secondary photo-archive compilation, not an official registry. It supports the stated chronology, specifications, call sign, and command-table entry only; it calls 6 August 1942 a completion date rather than an explicit commissioning date. It contains no asbestos survey, abatement, product, or exposure evidence.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
National Archives Special List #44, by Ship Numbers, indexes U.S. Navy deck logs for YMS-11 covering 7 August 1942 through 30 June 1945. The index establishes record coverage for that interval only; it does not establish commissioning, decommissioning, a transfer, individual service events, or an alternate designation.

    1942-08-07 to 1945-06-30 records
    Limitations
This is an index of deck-log existence and coverage, not the logbooks themselves. It establishes neither an event nor the vessel's full service dates, and it contains no material, asbestos, or exposure information. The actual logs are the next archival source path.

GAO product record HRD-80-2; direct request returned HTTP 403 on 2026-10-04; detailed report text not relied upon in this record
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO's 1979 report Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure is Navy-wide historical context for asbestos use and worker-protection efforts; it is retained only as class/era context for a Navy vessel constructed in 1942.

    Population
Navy asbestos program and workers (program-level context)
    Limitations
GAO returned HTTP 403 to the direct request on 2026-10-04, so no detailed proposition from the inaccessible report is attributed here. Navy-wide context cannot establish asbestos installation, product identity, quantity, condition, exposure, or causation aboard this hull.

    Finding type

No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or product-identification record was located in the sources reviewed for this batch. Ship-specific asbestos documentation is unknown.

    Limitations
A bounded search result, not proof that records do not exist. The NARA index and NavSource page reviewed contain no asbestos information. No class/era inference is used to claim asbestos aboard this hull.

  6. [6]CourtListener authenticated API v4 helper sweep, 2026-10-04 [court_record]
    Locator
Search ledger entries sl-uss-yms-11-yms11-04 through sl-uss-yms-11-yms11-07; helper reported fleet-wide pacing stand-down
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos litigation result was obtained in this pass. The four mandatory authenticated CourtListener base queries (exact-name opinion and docket; hull-number opinion and docket; limit 20) were each attempted through the approved helper, but the shared fleet pacing gate stopped the queries before a result page was returned.

    2026-10-04
    Limitations
This is an access gap, not proof that no litigation exists: no query returned results to classify. No asbestos-qualified variant was run because no completed base query returned a 20-result overflow.
