- Finding
- NavSource photo-archive page for YMS-118 records the hull's chronology: YMS-1 class auxiliary motor minesweeper laid down 8 May 1941 by Harbor Boat Building Co., Terminal Island, CA; launched 27 October 1941; completed 7 May 1942 and commissioned USS YMS-118; struck from the Naval Register 17 April 1946; transferred to the War Shipping Administration February 1947; sold 1951 to Northland Navigation Co., Ltd. of Vancouver, BC, rebuilt as general cargo vessel Pacific Prince; sold 31 January 1962 to Skeena Navigation Ltd.; sold 31 March 1962 to Northwest Shipping Co., Ltd.; sold 16 June 1966 to Fred S. Hill and John R. Keebaum of Seattle, rebuilt as a fishing boat and renamed V-O; recorded here as sunk February 1967 on a voyage Seattle to King Cove, AK. Specifications listed: displacement 270 t., length 136 ft, beam 24 ft 6 in, draft 8 ft, speed 15 kts, complement 32, armament one 3"/50 DP mount plus two 20mm mounts and two depth-charge projectors, propulsion two 880 bhp GM 8-268A diesels with Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear on two shafts; call sign Nan-Baker-Able-Yoke; commanding officer LTJG James F. Peterman, USNR (date column blank). Page states explicitly: no DANFS history exists for YMS-118. Launch photo caption (Acme News Pictures) describes her as the second of four half-million-dollar minesweepers built at the yard.

- Volunteer-compiled secondary record; the February 1967 loss month conflicts with two casualty compilations agreeing on 9 January 1967 (see correction row ev-uss-yms-118-04); the 270 t. displacement and 15-kt figures conflict with shipbuilding tables (320 t.) and class sources (13 kts) - logged in gaps. No asbestos or materials information; supports no asbestos claim.

- Limitations
- The published index establishes the existence and date span of the logbook run, not the contents of the logs; the underlying logs were not reviewed this session. The index documents no asbestos, material content, or exposure. Coverage dates describe the log run only - they are not commissioning or decommissioning dates.

- Finding type

- Finding
- The National Archives catalog carries file unit NAID 193170841, 'YMS-118, 6/14/42-2/28/46' - the ship's muster rolls on Microfilm Roll 8082, digitized as 215 page images through the Ancestry-NARA partnership, unrestricted, held by Textual Reference at College Park. Spot inspection of the scan set confirms the contents: the first forwarding sheet (June 1942 quarterly roll) is headed 'Muster Roll of the Crew of the U.S.S. Y.M.S. 118,' is annotated 'Comm 6-14-42 to 2-28-46 Final,' and bears the approval signature of Commanding Officer Edward L. Holtz, Lieut., USNR, and the certification of Executive Officer Lloyd J. Patterson, Lt.(jg), USNR. The roll series thus runs to a final muster of 28 February 1946 - bounding the unpublished decommissioning date - and documents the ship's full crew universe by name across 1942-1946.

- Limitations
- Muster rolls are personnel records: they establish names, rates, and reporting dates, not materials or conditions. They contain no asbestos information and support no asbestos claim. The catalog date range (6/14/42-2/28/46) differs slightly from the SL44 deck-log run (5/4/42-12/31/45) because they are different record series; the catalog API was intermittent this session, so the permalink plus the inspected scan are the verification of record.

[5]Alaska Shipwrecks (alaskashipwreck.com), 'V O (1967)' casualty compilation entry citing USCG casualty particulars incl. ON 504889; corroborated by ShipIndex (shipindex.org/ships/v_o) register citations [reputable_press]

- vessel_history
- Finding
- Loss event corrected: as the crab-fishing vessel V-O (US official no. 504889; former names Pacific Prince and YMS-118 documented in the same source), the hull sent a Mayday and was lost on 9 January 1967 about 15 miles northeast of Marmot Island, roughly 50 miles northeast of Kodiak, while bound from Seattle to King Cove. Five crew were lost including skipper and co-owner Fred Hill (58); Coast Guard cutters Confidence and Storis plus three Navy aircraft searched, and two bodies were recovered from a raft on 11 January. ShipIndex's register citations independently give '9 January 1967, off Marmot Island, 50 mi NE of Kodiak' for V.O. NavSource's 'sunk in February 1967' and nauticapedia's 'March 1967' are superseded by the two compilations agreeing on 9 January 1967.

- Limitations
- Specialist secondary compilations, not the underlying USCG Marine Board of Investigation report (not digitized); the two sources agree on the 9 January 1967 date and Marmot Island position while NavSource and nauticapedia diverge, so the corrected date stands on two-against-two corroboration. Crew loss is a casualty fact, not an exposure record; the row establishes the hull's end and disposition, nothing about asbestos.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Builder confirmation from shipbuilding tables: the Harbor Boatbuilding yard list (Terminal Island, CA) carries YMS-118 as yard hull no. 132, completed 7 May 1942, struck 1946 - matching the NavSource chronology. uboat.net independently gives ordered 1 April 1941, laid down 8 May 1941, launched 27 October 1941, commissioned 7 May 1942, stricken 17 April 1946. The Canadian record (nauticapedia, partially blocked) carries the post-sale chain as registry no. 195231: renamed Pacific Prince 1952, rebuilt 1952 at Star Shipyard (Mercers) Ltd., New Westminster BC, repowered 1957 with two tandem 220-bhp GM diesels.

- Finding
- Class context: the YMS type was a wood-hulled, non-magnetic coastal minesweeper - 561 built at 35 yacht yards from spring 1942 through spring 1945, all to essentially the same 136-ft design; the Mark I variant (YMS-1 through -134, covering this hull) carried two stacks. The January 1948 USNI Proceedings first-hand account 'Saga of a YMS' describes the class machinery arrangement: two GM main diesels for propulsion, a third diesel driving the magnetic-minesweeping generator, and two Hercules 30-kW diesels for auxiliary power - a diesel-only plant with no boilers and no steam system.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during World War II, the era and program under which this 1941-42 minesweeper was built, and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard U.S.-built hulls.

- Limitations
- Program/era-level scholarly documentation of asbestos use in WWII shipbuilding generally; does not name this vessel or its class and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. For this wood-hulled diesel craft the era inference is further narrowed by the absence of a steam plant.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material inventory, construction work package, or docketed case naming YMS-118, Pacific Prince, or V-O was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener remains an open, not-negative gap: the authenticated helper's fleet-wide pacing limiter declined the required base queries this session and instructed stand-down rather than bypass.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-42 hull is era-consistent with asbestos-containing components, and her 1952/1957 rebuilds are undocumented at materials level. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility. Litigation screening is incomplete: CourtListener was declined by fleet pacing, not searched to a negative.
