[2]NavSource Online, Mine Warfare Vessel Photo Archive, YMS-119 individual history page (live page verified 2026-10-04, HTTP 200) [other_primary]

- YMS-119 page chronology, specifications block, and commanding-officers table
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's individual YMS-119 page identifies this hull as a YMS-1 class auxiliary motor minesweeper laid down 15 July 1941 by the Harbor Boat Co., Terminal Island, California; launched 2 March 1942; completed 11 June 1942; transferred to the War Shipping Administration in March 1947; sold 6 June 1947; struck from the Naval Register 10 June 1947; fate unknown. The page's specification block gives 270-ton displacement, 136-foot length, 24-foot 6-inch beam, 8-foot draft, 15-knot speed, complement of 32, one 3-inch/50 dual-purpose mount with two 20mm mounts and two depth-charge projectors, and two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines with Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear on two shafts. It lists LT M. M. Rowley, USNR, as commanding officer in 1945 and states that no DANFS history is available for YMS-119.

- Harbor Boat Co. construction trades (1941-42); U.S. Navy YMS-119 crew (1942-47)
- Limitations
- NavSource is an individual-hull photo-archive compilation rather than an official Navy register. It supports the displayed hull identity, builder, milestones, disposition, and specifications, but provides no commissioning instrument, no asbestos information, and no survey, abatement, or exposure record. The 'completed' date is not converted into a commissioning date, and no asbestos content, quantity, condition, exposure, or causation is established.

- Finding
- National Archives Special List #44, by Ship Numbers, indexes U.S. Navy deck-log coverage for YMS-119 in a single interval: 1 May 1943 through 30 June 1945. The finding aid establishes cataloged Navy deck-log coverage for this hull; it does not establish the contents of those logs or any commissioning or decommissioning date.

- YMS-119 crew and operations documented in Navy deck logs
- Limitations
- This is a log-holdings index, not the deck-log content itself. The indexed interval begins 1943-05-01, after NavSource's recorded 1942-06-11 completion, and is not treated as a commissioning or decommissioning range. It establishes neither the logs' completeness nor any asbestos, materials, or exposure information.

[4]National Archives, An Introduction to Navy Deck Logs (live page verified 2026-10-04, HTTP 200) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Permanent-records rule; College Park holdings guidance; WWII-era partial-exception note
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- National Archives deck-log guidance states that only deck logs of commissioned Navy ships are retained as permanent records, that 1941-and-later logs are generally held at the National Archives in College Park, Maryland, and that World War II-era 'in service' vessels are a partial exception to the commissioned-only rule. The guidance provides the archival record path for the YMS-119 interval indexed in Special List #44; the underlying logs were not reviewed in this pass.

- Limitations
- Record-path guidance only. The permanence rule is not used to claim a commissioning date for YMS-119, and the guidance does not prove the indexed logs are digitized, complete, or accessible online. It contains no asbestos, materials, or exposure finding.

[5]NavSource Online, Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper (YMS) photo index and class description (live page verified 2026-10-04, HTTP 200) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Class-description paragraphs; YMS-1 through YMS-134 two-stack appearance group
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NavSource's YMS class index describes the type as wood-hulled auxiliary motor minesweepers, 561 built at 35 yacht yards, used during World War II for inshore sweeping ahead of amphibious assaults; it states that surviving YMS vessels were reclassified as AMS in 1947 and given names. YMS-119's individual page records her March 1947 WSA transfer, 1947-06-06 sale, and 1947-06-10 striking with no AMS designation documented, so the class-level reclassification is not applied to this hull.

- Limitations
- Class context does not establish the materials installed on YMS-119. The general 1947 AMS statement is not applied to this hull because the individual page documents sale and striking without an AMS designation.

- Finding
- A Kitsap Daily News World War II veteran tribute records Radarman 2nd Class Calvin Miles Purser, USN, with service dates 5 February 1943 to 9 March 1946 and lists USS YMS-119 and USS Patapsco (AOG-1) as his significant wartime duty stations; he is credited with the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal (one star), American Area Campaign Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

- One named YMS-119 crewmember (1943-1946 service window)
- Limitations
- A reader-submitted veteran tribute, not a Navy personnel or muster record. It names YMS-119 as a duty station without dates-per-station, and the Asiatic-Pacific credit covers the sailor's whole wartime service across two listed ships, so it does not by itself establish this hull's theater of operations. It contains no asbestos, materials, or exposure information.

- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, engineering drawing, product-identification record, or qualifying asbestos-litigation record was located in the bounded source review for this batch. Ship-specific asbestos documentation for YMS-119 is unknown.

- Limitations
- A bounded search result is not proof that no record exists. The NARA finding aid does not expose underlying log contents, NavSource contains no asbestos information, and three of four CourtListener base queries were blocked by the fleet pacing gate (the fourth completed with zero results). No inference from class, construction era, wooden hull, or diesel propulsion is used to claim or deny asbestos aboard this hull. No asbestos presence, absence, product identity, quantity, condition, individual exposure, or causation is established.

- Beginning Research; Cartographic Branch (Blueprints & Engineering Drawings); Historical Notes sections
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- The National Archives asbestos research guide explains that ship-specific asbestos research may require Navy engineering drawings, identifies the S39-Insulation and Lagging (and sometimes S48-Piping) drawing series in RG 19 (19-Hull paper drawings, 1874-1976; 19-Micro microfilm, 1945-1955) as the relevant research path, and cautions that sister ships built at different shipyards can differ in materials. This is research context only, not evidence that asbestos was aboard YMS-119.

[9]CourtListener authenticated API v4 helper, 2026-10-04; attempts and pacing stand-downs recorded in the batch report and search ledger [court_record]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-yms-119-yms119-10 through sl-uss-yms-119-yms119-14
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos-litigation finding was established in this pass. Of the four mandatory authenticated CourtListener base queries, the hull-number docket query ("YMS-119", type=r) completed with an HTTP 200 response and zero results; the exact-name opinion, exact-name docket, and hull-number opinion queries were stood down by the fleet-wide pacing gate before an HTTP result returned, the exact-name opinion's first attempt having timed out after pacing acquisition. No asbestos-qualified variants were run because no completed base query returned a 20-result overflow.

- Limitations
- This is an access-limited litigation sweep, not a comprehensive zero-result finding: one of four base queries completed with zero results and three were pacing-blocked. The helper reported that the fleet-wide request budget was momentarily spent and instructed the session not to retry in a loop; no raw, anonymous, or V3 CourtListener request was made. No litigation stage is assigned because no qualifying case hit was retrieved.
