- Finding
- Special List 44 (by Ship Numbers), PDF page 115, inventories U.S. Navy deck logs for YMS-128 covering 12/10/1942-8/31/1945, documenting indexed log holdings for the hull's in-scope wartime service.

- 1942-12-10 to 1945-08-31 (log coverage)
- Limitations
- Finding aid only: the dates are log-coverage spans, not asserted commissioning or decommissioning dates. The underlying logs were not examined, and per NARA's own guidance deck logs provide no direct evidence of asbestos use or presence aboard. Establishes that logs exist in RG 24, nothing about materials.

Martinac Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma, WA; launched 27 June 1942; completed and commissioned USS YMS-128 on 10 December 1942 under LT John O. Phillips, Jr., USNR; decommissioned 1 March 1946; struck from the Naval Register 17 April 1946; transferred to the War Shipping Administration November 1946. Registered 1948 to Keith Capper of Seattle, WA as the fishing boat Shrewy Wench; 1950 to American Tugboat Co. of Everett, WA as the tug Shrewy Wench; 1951 to Jens T. Schott of Seattle as the tug Shrewy Wench; operated 1951 under the Canadian flag; fate unknown. Specifications: 270 t.; 136' x 24'6" x 8'; 15 kts.; complement 32; one 3"/50 DP, two 20mm, two depth charge projectors; two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer-maintained reference, not an official record; milestone dates are not independently traced to primary documents on this page (the builder, completion date, and struck-in-1946 disposition are corroborated by the Colton shipbuilding reference and the HyperWar minecraft list). Contains no asbestos information whatsoever.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No DANFS history exists for YMS-128: both NHHC DANFS candidate URLs return HTTP 404 (verified live), and the NavSource individual page states 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-128.'

- Limitations
- Absence of a DANFS entry is expected for unnamed YMS-numbered small craft and is not evidence about the hull's service or materials; it only bounds the official-history coverage available for this record.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Class/type context: 561 YMS-type wood-hulled minesweepers were built at 35 U.S. yacht yards during WWII; YMS-1 through YMS-134 (the subgroup including YMS-128) carried two stacks; the type was used for inshore sweeping in U.S. waters as early as 1942 and in all theaters. As diesel-powered wooden small craft of the 1941-42 emergency shipbuilding period, era-standard asbestos applications would have been thermal insulation on engine and exhaust runs, gaskets, valve and machinery packing, and electrical insulation - the period when the federal government had reserved asbestos supply for shipbuilding.

- Population
- Construction trades at 35 yacht yards (class context); YMS crews (class context)
- Limitations
- Class/type documentation and era inference, not a hull record: no source reviewed states that any asbestos product was installed aboard YMS-128 specifically. The diesel plant excludes the boiler/turbine-lagging pathway typical of steam vessels. Does not establish presence, quantity, individual exposure, or present-day material.

- Limitations
- gao.gov returns HTTP 403 to automated fetches (re-confirmed this session); the product-page description was used and full text remains an open lead. Program-level document that does not name this hull or any YMS; establishes nothing about materials aboard YMS-128.

[7]National Archives, guided research topic: Asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel, 1941-1961 [other_primary]
- Locator
- NARA guided-topics asbestos page, Bureau of Ships correspondence / GIB / S39 drawing sections (page verified live 2026-10-04)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's asbestos research guide identifies the record series that would carry hull-level materials evidence for a WWII Navy hull: RG 19 Bureau of Ships general/confidential/secret correspondence filed by hull designation (YMS-128) and by class, General Information Books, Board of Inspection and Survey reports (RG 38), and S39 (insulation and lagging) ship engineering drawings in the RG 19 Hull and Microfilm drawing series. The guide also states that deck logs and muster rolls provide no direct evidence of asbestos.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built in the peak asbestos-reserved shipbuilding era. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present, and does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
