- Documented for this hull: YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper; laid down 13 August 1941 by Western Boat Building Co., Tacoma, WA; launched 16 March 1942; completed and commissioned 8 September 1942; struck from the Naval Register 17 April 1946; transferred to the War Shipping Administration in January 1947; fate unknown. Specifications: displacement 270 t; length 136'; beam 24' 6"; draft 8'; speed 15 kts; complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts; call sign NANR. Photo captions document her at Kodiak, Alaska on 4 July 1944 (a National Archives photograph via contributor Tracy White); alongside sister YMS-132 at Cold Bay, Alaska circa July 1944; and at Olson & Winge Marine Works, Seattle, WA circa August 1944 alongside U.S. Army Air Corps rescue vessels. The page states 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-134.'

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - but its milestone dates here are corroborated by NARA primary records (muster-roll cover sheet 'Comm 9-8-42 to 4-1-46 Final'; Special List 44 deck-log coverage) and by the Colton/Naval Marine Archive builder's list. Tonnage and engine-power figures conflict slightly across sources (see gaps). 'Transferred to the War Shipping Administration in January 1947' is anachronistic - WSA was abolished effective 1 September 1946 and its functions went to the U.S. Maritime Commission (see ev-07). Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding
- NARA holds and has digitized the ship's muster rolls (NAID 193043987): the cover forwarding sheet is annotated 'Comm 9-8-42 to 4-1-46 Final,' confirming the commissioned run 8 September 1942 - 1 April 1946; the September 1942 roll was forwarded 21 January 1943 'From: Outside continental limits of U.S.A.,' signed by Executive Officer S. L. Palm, Lt.(jg), USNR, and approved by Commanding Officer H. G. Stevens, Lt., USNR - placing the ship outside the continental United States by January 1943, consistent with the Alaskan service documented by photographs. The Report of Changes for the month ending 31 March 1946 shows the crew being transferred to receiving stations (Toledo OH, San Pedro CA, Charleston SC) in February-March 1946, consistent with pre-strike demobilization. Separately, NARA Special List 44 (List of Logbooks of US Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947) indexes deck logs for YMS-134 covering 8 September 1942 - 30 June 1945 AND 1 December 1945 - 8 April 1946; these deck logs are textual at College Park and were not found among the digitized 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations' file units (series 594258) as of 2026-10-04.

- Crew of record across the commissioned window (roster-level primary evidence for exposure-population reconstruction)
- Limitations
- Muster rolls are crew/personnel records - they establish the commissioned window, command identity, and crew movements, not material content of the vessel. The deck logs exist but are undigitized; their content (ports, availabilities, overhaul scope) is unexamined. The July-November 1945 gap between the two SL44 log ranges is unexplained - the ship may have been out of commission or logs may simply be absent from the list. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- YMS-134 is mentioned by name in digitized records of the commands she operated under: the Naval Operating Base / Naval Air Station Kodiak war diary for February 1943, war diaries of the Commander Northwestern Sector 13th Naval District for September-October 1942, the May 1944 deck log of USS Charleston (PG-51 - flagship for Commander, Alaskan Sector, 13th Naval District, which operated from Dutch Harbor and Kodiak throughout the war), and Commander Western Sea Frontier war diaries across 1944-45. These index-level hits corroborate that she operated in the Alaskan/Aleutian sector under 13th Naval District and Western Sea Frontier commands through the war - consistent with the Kodiak and Cold Bay photographs.

- Finding
- The MOHAI finding aid documents photographs of this hull at the Olson & Winge Marine Works yard, Seattle: items 124-128 (dated August 1944, photographer Ray Krantz) show 'U.S. Army Air Corps rescue vessels, and YMS-134 and YMS-132 in water near yard'; items 129-130 (circa 1944) show 'YMS-122 and YMS-134 at dock near yard.' The finding aid's historical note records that from 1941 to 1944 the Olson & Winge yard 'devoted its production facilities completely to the war effort, primarily converting, adapting and repairing ships for military use.'

- Finding
- Era inference for this hull type: the YMS-1 class was a wooden-hulled, diesel-powered inshore minesweeper - no boilers or steam plant, so the principal asbestos pathway of steam vessels (boiler, turbine, and steam-line lagging) does not apply to this design. The era-standard asbestos applications plausibly carried aboard are the smaller shipboard uses the Navy itself described as universal: clutch and brake linings and electrical cable insulation, plus diesel exhaust/muffler lagging, engine and flange gaskets, and machinery packing. YMS-134 is the last hull of the class's two-stack configuration group (YMS-1 through -134).

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, materials list, construction spec sheet, or work package was located for YMS-134. The sources cited describe the class's physical plant (wooden hull, GM diesel engines) and the Navy's era asbestos practices; neither documents asbestos aboard this hull. Wooden construction and diesel propulsion materially reduce the likely asbestos footprint versus steam vessels of the era, but do not eliminate component-level uses. No quantity; no manufacturer attribution.

- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos posture for the fleet this hull belonged to: 'according to the Navy, although all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables,' thermal insulation was the Navy's major shipboard use of asbestos; product specifications were not changed to asbestos-free materials until 1973, and some ships were delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978. The 1975 policy was to remove asbestos insulation only when damaged or when removal was required for repairs. Fieldwork was conducted at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards.

- CORRECTION to the disposal record as commonly printed: NavSource (and derivative lists) record YMS-134 as 'transferred to the War Shipping Administration in January 1947,' but the War Shipping Administration had been terminated effective 1 September 1946, with its functions transferred to the U.S. Maritime Commission. The January 1947 receiving agency was therefore legally the Maritime Commission; 'WSA' in the disposal notation is either shorthand for the merchant-fleet disposal chain or a surviving paper label.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS YMS-134 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener base queries returned zero hits in both indexes ('YMS-134' opinions: 0; 'YMS-134' dockets: 0) - no opinion text or docket in the repository mentions this hull. No DANFS history exists for this hull (NavSource; confirmed by NHHC site search). Live-web sweeps for 'YMS-134 asbestos' returned no ship-specific material - only law-firm marketing listicles covering minesweepers generally (mesotheliomahope.com, mesotheliomaveterans.org, simmonsfirm.com, swmwlaw.com), excluded by source policy for lack of primary sourcing.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent materials remain plausible at component level and the undigitized deck logs and any builder/yard records are unexamined. The stricter-phrase CourtListener variants ('USS YMS-134') were not run: 'USS YMS-134' is a subset of 'YMS-134' phrase matching, so zero base hits make a zero variant certain; PACER/RECAP coverage is also inherently incomplete for unfiled or unindexed matters. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
