    Finding
NavSource identifies this hull as YMS-138, a YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper, and reports that Astoria Marine Construction Co., Astoria, Oregon laid her down on 29 August 1942; she launched on 17 April 1943, was completed on 7 June 1943, and commissioned on 19 June 1943. It reports that she was struck from the Navy Register on 19 June 1946, transferred to the State Department Foreign Liquidation Commission in November 1947, sold to Thailand as HTMS Ladya, and has an unknown fate. Its specification block reports two 880-bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, and two shafts; 136-foot length; and complement 32.

Astoria construction workforce (1942-43); Navy crew (1943-46); later Thai Navy service reported
    Limitations
NavSource is a live, hull-specific volunteer historical compilation rather than an official registry or primary construction record. It corroborates identity and reports milestones, but does not document asbestos, a formal decommissioning date, sale records, or the eventual disposition.

    Finding
Special List 44 lists YMS-138 with deck-log coverage from 19 June 1943 through 31 July 1945. The entry establishes an archival lead for ship-specific operational and maintenance records.

    Population
YMS-138 crew during listed log coverage
    Limitations
These are deck-log coverage dates, not claimed commissioning or decommissioning dates. The list does not disclose the logs' contents and does not establish asbestos aboard this hull; no log content was reviewed in this batch.

    Finding type

    Finding
A Department of the Navy enclosure in GAO's 1979 report describes asbestos applications in Navy ships generally: thermal insulation for machinery, equipment, and piping; gaskets and packing in shipboard piping; deck materials; electrical cabling; and brakes and clutches. It also says the Navy had revised insulation specifications to eliminate asbestos as an acceptable thermal-insulation material in 1975.

Navy ships and shipbuilding/repair operations generally
    Limitations
Fleet-wide 1979 documentation, not a YMS-1-class record and not evidence that any stated application was installed aboard YMS-138 in 1942-43. It supplies research context only; it establishes no quantity, manufacturer, exposure, condition, or causation for this hull.

NARA guide, 'Beginning Research' and RG 19 discussion (sections beginning lines 63 and 68)
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's research guide states that documenting whether a particular naval vessel had asbestos material requires ship-history research and directs researchers to Bureau of Ships Record Group 19 correspondence, construction-yard files, specification files, and qualified-products lists. For YMS-138, these are open archival leads for material-specific research.

    1941-1961 research scope
    Limitations
A research guide, not a finding about YMS-138. It confirms neither asbestos nor its absence aboard the hull and does not substitute for retrieving a ship, class, yard, or component record.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos litigation, survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or material list was located in the completed source review. CourtListener result retrieval is incomplete because the authenticated fleet pacing limiter did not grant a request token during this session; this is an access gap, not a negative CourtListener result.

    Study period
    2026-10-04
    Limitations
The completed negative finding is limited to the sources reviewed. Two CourtListener base-query attempts were submitted through the required authenticated helper but did not reach a returned search result before the fleet pacing wait exceeded the execution window; the remaining base queries were not sent. No asbestos-query variants were run because no base query produced a 20-result overflow. Absence from this batch does not establish absence of litigation or material aboard.
