- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's official Special List 44 identifies deck-log holdings for YMS-14 in two entries: 19 October 1942 through 30 November 1944, and 1 January through 30 April 1945. The first listed span is the batch in-scope record interval. These are holdings/coverage entries, not commissioning, decommissioning, deployment, or material-condition findings.

- YMS-14 crew entries during listed log intervals (contents unexamined)
- Limitations
- The finding aid establishes listed log coverage only; it does not describe log contents, confirm that every dated volume survives in current custody, or identify asbestos, exposure, products, casualties, or legal eligibility. The logs themselves were not reviewed.

- YMS-14 personnel at loss (not individually identified)
- Limitations
- This casualty-list entry establishes the loss mechanism, place, and date only. It does not identify the other vessel, describe the collision, establish a decommissioning or strike date, or document onboard materials, asbestos exposure, or legal eligibility.

[4]NavSource Online: Mine Warfare Vessel Photo Archive, YMS-14 (11/19014) [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource 11/19014.htm header, YMS-1 class history/specification block, and DANFS note
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's hull page corroborates the identity as YMS-14, a YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper. It reports: laid down 1 July 1941 by Rice Brothers Corp., Boothbay, Maine; launched 13 June 1942; completed 7 October 1942; sunk in collision with Herndon (DD-638) in Boston Harbor 11 January 1945; and struck from the Naval Register 28 April 1945. Its specification block lists a wooden 270-ton craft, 136 feet long, with a complement of 32 and two General Motors 8-268A diesel engines driving two shafts. The page says no DANFS history is available for YMS-14.

- Rice Brothers construction trades (1941-42); YMS-14 crew (1942-45)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, used here to corroborate hull identity and as a lead; it is not a primary naval registry. Its milestone and specification statements do not establish a commissioned date, detailed service history, asbestos content, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility. The collision and loss date are independently corroborated by NHHC (ev-02).

[5]U.S. Government Accountability Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 Oct. 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2; access gap recorded 2026-10-04; diesel configuration in ev-03
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy asbestos-program report is era context for a Navy craft built in 1941-42; it is not a hull-specific survey or material list for YMS-14. Combined with the recorded diesel, two-shaft configuration, it supports only a class/era research priority for exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation rather than boiler or steam-line insulation.

- 1941-1945 hull era; report 1979
- Population
- Navy asbestos program and shipyard workers; no YMS-14-specific population
- Limitations
- The GAO product page and report file were live-checked but access was blocked by GAO's automated-access control (HTTP 403); no full-text statement is attributed here. This is program/class context only, not proof that asbestos or any named product was installed aboard YMS-14, remained aboard, caused exposure, or supports legal eligibility.

[6]Batch-8818 search ledger (this record): NARA Special List 44; NHHC casualty list; NavSource hull and YMS-class pages; GAO HRD-80-2 access attempt; authenticated CourtListener helper [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-01 through sl-06
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, product record, or direct asbestos finding was located in the sources reviewed for USS YMS-14. The required CourtListener litigation sweep is incomplete: its first required exact-name opinion request was made through the authenticated helper, but the shared fleet pacing limiter refused to issue it before a result returned; the remaining three required base queries were not sent so they would not bypass or retry the limiter.

- Limitations
- A negative search result is not proof that asbestos was absent. It does not resolve asbestos litigation, because no CourtListener result page was obtained; it does not establish or defeat exposure, causation, a claim, or legal eligibility. Undigitized deck logs and construction records remain leads.
