NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates here corroborated by NARA record windows (logs close 18 Oct 1944) and French compilations, but two French sources conflict on laid-down/launch dates and on the M-644/M654 pennant (see gaps). Contains no asbestos or material content.

YMS-1 through YMS-134 (this hull's block) carried two stacks. Originally rated as service craft; used in WWII for inshore sweeping to prepare amphibious assaults; survivors reclassified AMS 1947 and named; MSC(O) 1955. Class characteristics: length 136', beam 24'6", displacement 320 tons, complement 33, designed speed 12 knots, GM 8-268A diesels on two shafts, 880 shp.

Special List 44 (ship-number index, PDF page 115) lists US Navy logbooks for YMS-16 covering 2/26/1943 - 10/18/1944. The coverage window matches her documented US service: it opens 11 days after the NavSource completion date (15 Feb 1943) and closes on the exact transfer date to France (18 Oct 1944). Logbooks of this era are held in RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel), Entry 118 at Archives II, College Park.

Finding-aid inventory entry only: it documents that logbooks exist and their coverage window - these are log-coverage dates, NOT commissioning or decommissioning dates, and the row asserts nothing about log content. Digitized muster-roll scans for the identical window are separately cataloged (NAID 192867533, ev-04); the deck-log pages themselves were not individually verified page-by-page this session.

The hull's quarterly muster rolls are digitized and were read directly: 'U.S. NAVY MUSTER ROLLS' divider, then quarterly crew rosters on form HNP 605-A covering 26 Feb 1943 - 18 Oct 1944. The roll for the quarter ending 30 September 1943 lists 29 enlisted men by name with service numbers, ratings and dates first received aboard - most received 26 Feb 1943 (her commissioning week), others through April 1943. Ratings present include BM1c, Cox, GM3c, MoMM1c/MoMM2c, EM2c/EM3c, MM1c, QM1c/QM3c, SM2c, SC2c, Y3c, F2c, S1c/S2c - the engine-room and deck ratings of a small diesel minesweeper.

Ship's own war diary, read via OCR: attached to Escort Sweeper Group, Eighth Amphibious Force. November 1943 - based at Cagliari, Sardinia in a unit with YMS-34 (SOPA), YMS-18 and YMS-208 that 'cleared a channel through the Gulf of Cagliari to the harbor entrance'; this ship swept two mines 1 November and four mines 2 November 1943 (positions recorded). Escorted Liberty ship John Breckenridge to Bizerte, Tunisia (with YMS-34, YMS-18); December 1943 column to Oran, Algeria with PC-542, YMS-18, YMS-37. February 1944 convoy work to Naples; dropped out of formation 29 Feb with fuel-oil-line failure. March 1944 - 17 March sank a drifting moored contact mine by small-arms fire off the Palermo approaches, then entered Dry Dock #2 Palermo, remaining 17-20 March 'undergoing minor repairs and having the bottom scraped and painted.' April-May 1944 - Anzio-area patrol and magnetic-acoustic sweeps (Jig and Baker areas), convoy escorts Naples-Pozzuoli-Anzio; magnetic-cable adjustments streamed in Naples Bay 7 April; 31 May convoyed LCT-565 and LCT-229 to Anzio. June 1944 sweep maneuvers out of Salerno/Palermo. 27 July 1944 at Palermo - 'Radar and BN installation completed'; sailed for Cagliari, mooring alongside H.M.S. Empire Dace. Finding
A 1942-43 wood-hulled diesel minesweeper sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, but the asbestos-relevant systems aboard a vessel of this type are limited compared with steam combatants: era-standard applications were thermal insulation and lagging around engine exhaust and machinery spaces, gaskets and valve packing in machinery and fuel/seawater systems, and electrical insulation/fireproofing. She carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Her documented maintenance events (bottom scraped and painted in Dry Dock #2 Palermo, March 1944; radar and BN installation at Palermo, July 1944) are the kind of work that disturbs installed materials, noted as pathway context only.

No DANFS entry exists for the hull (NavSource states this; NHHC URLs 404). NVR carries no entry (pre-1987 disposal). The digitized primary records (muster rolls, three war diaries) contain operational and personnel detail but no material or asbestos content. CAVEAT: CourtListener was only partially searched this session - the exact-name opinion query returned zero results while the remaining base queries were blocked by the fleet-wide rate limiter; logged as blocked, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos aboard YMS-class craft without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
