    vessel_history
    Finding
NavSource's live hull page identifies this vessel as Chauvenet (AGS-11), ex-YMS-195: laid down 3 April 1942 by Hiltebrant Dock Co., Kingston, New York; launched 10 August 1942; completed 20 March 1943; commissioned USS YMS-195 on 23 March 1943; named Chauvenet and reclassified AGS-11 on 20 March 1945; decommissioned in 1946; struck 3 July 1946; transferred to the War Shipping Administration in February 1947; sold in 1947 as British mercantile Zipper; and foundered in 1963, 100 miles off Georgetown, British Guiana. It gives two 1,000 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts, and complement 32. The page states that no DANFS history is currently available for Chauvenet (AGS-11).

    Finding
National Archives Special List 44, by ship number, lists US Navy deck-log coverage for YMS-195 from 3/22/1943 through 4/7/1945. This is log coverage only, not a commissioning or decommissioning date.

  4. [4]National Archives, Researching Asbestos aboard US Naval Vessel up through 1961 [other_primary]
    Locator
Beginning Research; Bureau of Ships correspondence; Board of Inspection and Survey; Cartographic Branch; Other Records and their usefulness
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
The National Archives' guide to researching asbestos aboard U.S. naval vessels through 1961 identifies Bureau of Ships correspondence, inspection reports, specifications, and engineering drawings as research paths for ship-specific asbestos inquiry. It expressly says deck logs and muster rolls provide no direct evidence of asbestos use or presence; deck logs can instead help identify dates of major work. The guide does not name YMS-195 or Chauvenet and does not establish asbestos aboard this hull.

    Limitations
Government research guidance for the 1941-1961 Navy-material period, not evidence about this vessel. It supports the archival strategy only and does not establish asbestos presence, absence, product identity, quantity, condition, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility aboard YMS-195/AGS-11.

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
The required authenticated CourtListener base sweep returned no results for exact-name opinion and docket searches for "USS Chauvenet" and hull-number opinion and docket searches for "YMS-195" (limit 20 each). No result set overflowed; therefore no asbestos-qualified variants were run.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or CourtListener litigation record naming YMS-195/Chauvenet was located in this pass. National Archives guidance identifies RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence, inspection reports, specifications, and engineering drawings as unretrieved archival leads; Special List 44 identifies the YMS-195 deck-log run, which can assist in dating major work but is not direct asbestos evidence.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Firecrawl access was unavailable because its keyless quota was exhausted; direct live-source verification was used as the documented fallback. No archival box-level retrieval or materials testing was performed.
