Martinac Shipbuilding Co., Tacoma, WA; launched 6 March 1943; completed 30 August 1943; struck from the Naval Register 19 June 1946; transferred to the State Department Foreign Liquidation Commission April 1947; transferred to South Korea 6 August 1947; commissioned ROKS Gapyeong (YMS 509) 11 November 1947; struck a mine and sank September 1950. Call sign Nan-Charlie-Jig-Able. Spec block: displacement 270 t; length 136 ft; beam 24 ft 6 in; draft 8 ft; speed 15 kts; complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20 mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Page states 'There is no DANFS History currently available for YMS-220.' Crew-member photography (Motor Machinist's Mate William Thompson collection) places the ship at Key West, FL, and shows Japanese officers signing surrender papers in Korea.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS practice, but no DANFS entry exists for cross-verification and the NVR does not cover hulls disposed before 1987. Ship-specific history only; contains no asbestos or material content. The September 1950 loss is stated without location or casualty detail; ROK-service corroboration located only in non-authoritative secondary compilations (see search_ledger sl-12, sl-13).

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 (by ship number) records U.S. Navy deck logs for YMS-220 covering 8/31/1943 - 11/30/1945 - the full span from the day after her recorded completion (1943-08-30) through November 1945. The logs themselves (RG 24, Bureau of Naval Personnel) are held at the National Archives at College Park and are NOT among the hulls digitized online: YMS-220 does not appear on NARA's online deck-log availability list (checked 2026-10-04; digitized YMS hulls include YMS-238, -268, -271, -291, -299, and others, but not -220).

    Limitations
Log-coverage record only - establishes that deck logs exist for this hull and their date span, not commissioning/decommissioning dates and not any content of the logs. Deck logs of small wartime craft rarely document construction materials; they are an archival lead for operations and crew, not an asbestos source. No asbestos content.

  4. [4]Era inference built on: NavSource YMS-220 specifications (wooden-hulled YMS-1 class, 2 x GM 8-268A diesels, no steam plant); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy-wide asbestos-use documentation (see ev-04) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A wooden-hulled, diesel-powered motor minesweeper built 1942-43 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type and period were exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and a 136-ft wooden-hulled YMS carried far less insulation tonnage than a steam combatant.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-220. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. The builder yard (J. M. Martinac, Tacoma) has no yard-level asbestos documentation in the Atlas yard dataset, so even yard-level inference is unavailable.

    Finding type

    Finding
GAO documented Navy asbestos management in the fleet era: the report reviewed Navy efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure (fieldwork at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards), including the use of asbestos in Navy ships, and records that the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs - modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas. Asbestos insulation was thus present and managed (not yet systematically removed) across the Navy ship fleet through the 1970s, decades after this hull's 1942-43 construction.

Program-level documentation; supports era context only, not any fact specific to this hull. Content taken from the GAO product-page Highlights (verified live 2026-10-04 via browser-grade fetch; curl/plain automated fetch returns HTTP 403). The full report PDF was not retrieved - the Highlights do not itemize ship types or dates of original asbestos installation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying case naming YMS-220 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener base queries (exact-name opinion, exact-name docket, hull-number opinion, hull-number docket, --limit 20, authenticated and paced via the fleet helper) returned no qualifying asbestos litigation. An open-web litigation sweep surfaced only generic asbestos-litigation material unrelated to the vessel. Law-firm marketing/listicle content asserting asbestos aboard YMS-class boats exists but is excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era materials are plausible as inference. Her September 1950 loss by mine strike means no post-service survey, museum record, or abatement contract should be expected to exist. Deck logs (1943-45) are undigitized at NARA College Park - an open archival lead. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
