- Documented for this hull: YMS-1 class auxiliary motor minesweeper; laid down 23 November 1942 by Mojean and Erickson, Tacoma, Washington; launched 28 February 1943; completed 19 August 1943; struck from the Naval Register 19 June 1946; transferred to the State Department, Foreign Liquidation Commission, October 1947; fate unknown. Specifications: displacement 270 t.; length 136'; beam 24'6"; draft 8'; speed 15 kts.; complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Call sign Nan-Charlie-King-Easy. Photo credits document crewman Alfred R. Anaya and a photograph by 'George G. Rosendall, LTjg, USNR, Commanding Officer.'

- Mojean & Ericson construction trades (1942-43); crew (1943-46); FLC/foreign handlers (1947)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track official records. 'Completed' (19 Aug 1943) carried as the in-service/commissioning date; the muster roll corroborates crew received aboard that date (see ev-06). Contains no asbestos content. Builder spelling 'Erickson' here vs 'Ericson' elsewhere (see gaps). 'Two 880bhp' engines is ambiguous - the GM 8-268A was a ~440-480 bhp engine; class references give 2 x 440-480 shp (~880-960 bhp total).

- Finding
- Ordered 14 March 1942; built by Mojean and Ericson Shipbuilding Corp., Tacoma, Washington; commissioned 19 August 1943; stricken 19 June 1946. In the Balikpapan order of battle YMS-224 is listed in the YMS sub-unit (TU 78.2.92, Lt.Cdr. D.W. Blakeslee) of Minesweeping Unit TG 78.2.9, with commanding officer 'Lt.(jg) F.J. Weingartner, USNR.' The action-report transcription records: 'At 1815I/1 [July 1945, Fox day], USS YMS-84, USS YMS-224 and USS YMS-367 reported for duty with TU 78.2.9' - i.e., she joined the minesweeping unit on the day of the landings, after the pre-assault sweep phase (15-30 June) in which sister YMS sustained mine damage (YMS-50 sunk, YMS-39 and YMS-365 sunk, YMS-335 and YMS-314 damaged).

- uboat.net is a researcher-maintained secondary compilation; the operational narrative is a transcription of the actual CTF 78.2 and CTG 78.2.9 action reports, but the transcription contains OCR-level typos and the ship-page fields are secondary. Documents presence and timing at Balikpapan only; does not establish earlier operating areas between commissioning (Aug 1943) and June 1945. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- The official 1953 awards manual credits YMS-224 as follows: engagement credit '15 Jun 45 - 15 Jul 45' under code P37-3 (Balikpapan operation, whose credited operation window is 15 Jun - 20 Jul 45); '14 Oct 45 - 2 Mar 46' under code P207 (Minesweeping Operations Pacific umbrella); and '22 Feb 46 - 2 Mar 40[sic - the manual prints a typographical 1940; the sub-operation window is 22 Feb - 2 Mar 46]' under code P207-28 (Yangtze River Approaches). The medal eligibility table lists: YMS 224 - Navy Occupation Service, 13 Oct - 13 Nov 45, clasp A; China Service (extended), 14 Dec 45 - 10 May 46.

- 1945-1946 (credited windows); manual rev. 1953
- Population
- crew aboard during credited windows (Jun-Jul 1945; Oct 1945-May 1946)
- Limitations
- Award-credit windows establish qualification for campaign/service credit, not day-by-day location: the manual's P37-3 credit window (15 Jun - 15 Jul 45) begins before YMS-224's documented 'reported for duty' with TU 78.2.9 (1815I 1 Jul 45) - the ship was credited for participation during the operation window, but her physical presence in Balikpapan Bay before Fox day is not established by the action report transcription. Postwar windows (P207, P207-28 Yangtze River Approaches, China Service extended through 10 May 46) corroborate postwar Pacific minesweeping in Japanese/Chinese waters consistent with the Subic Bay decommissioning (ev-06). Manual's '2 Mar 40' for P207-28 is a printing error; the P207-28 table window is 22 Feb - 2 Mar 46. No asbestos content.

- Finding
- The PUC list cites 'Task Unit 78.2.9' - USS Sentry (AM-299), USS Scout (AM-296), USS 'Scuffie' (AM-298) [sic - manual's spelling of USS Scuffle], and YMS-9, -10, -39, -46, -47, -49, -50, -52, -53, -95, -196, -314, -315, -335, -336, -339, -364, -365, -366, -368, -392 - 24 named units in all - for '15 Jun - 1 Jul 45 - Balikpapan, Borneo, Netherlands East Indies.' YMS-224 is NOT among the 24 cited units, consistent with the action report showing her joining TU 78.2.9 at 1815I on 1 July 1945 (the last day of the citation window). YMS-224 should therefore not be described as a Balikpapan Presidential Unit Citation unit.

- Limitations
- Exclusion from the cited unit list is meaningful because the action report documents a Fox-day (1 Jul 45) join time at the edge of the 15 Jun - 1 Jul citation window. Citation lists reflect the awarding document; personnel who were aboard and participated on 1 Jul may have individually qualified per manual rules - the hull-level record is what is asserted here, not any individual's eligibility.

- NARA's Special List 44 indexes surviving U.S. Navy deck logs: for YMS-224 it lists deck log coverage of 19 August 1943 - 30 June 1945 (in-service day through the eve of the Balikpapan landings). The logs are the vessel's official daily record - the surviving primary source for her commissioning-to-mid-1945 movements, locations, and operations. The listed window ends 30 June 1945, one day before she reported to TU 78.2.9 on Fox day at Balikpapan.

- Limitations
- Primary documentation (crew names, dates, locations) sampled from ~10 of 270 images - not an exhaustive read; individual names transcribed from period forms (handwritten signatures carry minor reading uncertainty, e.g., CO 'Lowden'). The decommissioning location is established by the report's 'upon decommissioning' heading and the crew's Subic Bay receiving-ship destination; the form does not print the ship's decommissioning port on the sampled pages. Muster rolls are crew documents - they contain no asbestos, material, or machinery-condition content.

There was a similar Diesel direct-connected to a generator for magnetic minesweeping, while two Hercules 30-KW Diesels furnished electric power for the galley, for ventilating, and for other auxiliary equipment' - i.e., an all-diesel plant with a dedicated sweep generator and small auxiliary generators; crew machinery experience described as largely steam-trained and inexperienced with the diesel plant.

- Finding
- A wooden-hulled, all-diesel auxiliary minesweeper built 1942-43 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era, but its asbestos-relevant systems are materially narrower than a steam vessel's: era-standard applications aboard a small diesel auxiliary were diesel engine and exhaust-system lagging, engine/flange gaskets, valve and machinery packing, electrical insulation and panel board, winch brake linings, and incidental galley/accommodation insulation. There is no boiler or steam distribution - no boiler casing, steam-drum, or steam-line lagging pathway - and the relevant exposure volume is a single small engine room worked by a crew of ~30.
