- Limitations
- Bare rename/reclassification record - the entirety of the DANFS entry; no construction, service-history, or disposal narrative exists in DANFS for this hull. The rename date conflicts with NavSource's 18 February 1947 (see gaps). Live NHHC page for this numbered-craft entry not located (same standing NHHC link-rot defect as Batch-01/Batch-98); verbatim transcription mirror cited. No asbestos content.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but the rename date conflicts with DANFS (18 vs 17 February 1947 - see gaps). The NVR-of-1949 reserve note combined with a CO list extending to September 1952 leaves her post-1947 active/reserve status undocumented. Page contains no operational history between commissioning and the postwar period, and no asbestos content.

- HyperWar 'Selected documents relating to the loss of USS Mount Hood' - war-diary paragraph 6 loss table, row 'YMS-238'
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- On 10 November 1944 the ammunition ship USS Mount Hood (AE-11), carrying an estimated 3,800 tons of ordnance, exploded at her anchorage in Seeadler Harbor, Manus, Admiralty Islands. The Commander Naval Base Manus loss table names YMS-238 among the damaged vessels: estimated 10,000 man-hours required to effect repairs, with 1 known dead, 1 missing, and 13 injured - the third-heaviest repair estimate in the table, after repair ship Mindanao (ARG-3, 48,000) and YMS-293 (13,200). Casualties across the harbor totaled 45 known dead, 327 missing, 371 injured (corrected figures per the 14 Dec 1944 letter).

- YMS-238 crew (1 dead, 1 missing, 13 injured); Manus harbor and repair-ship population incl. USS Mindanao (ARG-3) repair gangs
- Limitations
- Official damage/casualty record only: establishes that YMS-238 was present in Seeadler Harbor and was damaged with casualties on 10 November 1944, and that repair was estimated at 10,000 man-hours. It does not describe what the repairs entailed, where they were performed, or what materials were disturbed - any insulation/material disturbance in the repair is inference, not record. No asbestos content.

- Finding type

- Finding
- A serving-officer memoir of YMS operations: at Manus, 'Seven of the YMS's were tied up alongside the Mindanao, which was to be our repair ship... In the next berth lay the ammunition ship Mount Hood... when at 0859 a terrific explosion rocked Manus Harbor... The YMS-238 looked mortally wounded, and it was there that I left her.' Corroborates the official loss-table entry: YMS-238 moored in the cluster alongside repair ship Mindanao (ARG-3) when Mount Hood exploded.

- Limitations
- Holdings list only - establishes that logs covering those dates exist in NARA custody, not their contents, and the coverage window is log coverage, not commissioning/decommissioning dates (commissioned 23 Nov 1942, roughly two months before the first listed log). The logbooks themselves are not digitized in accessible sources; catalog.archives.gov is JS-rendered and could not be searched from this session. ACPL transcription is OCR of page scans - citation to the underlying NARA publication.

[7]Era inference built on: NavSource specifications (wooden-hulled YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper; 2 x 880 bhp GM 8-268A diesels, two shafts; no steam plant); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy program-level documentation of shipboard asbestos-insulation use through the early 1970s (see ev-07) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A 1942-built diesel-powered combatant sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small wooden-hulled diesel minesweeper of this period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal insulation, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on sweep-winch machinery. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam ships does not apply. The documented 10,000-man-hour repair after the Mount Hood explosion (ev-03) is an era-repair event in which any installed lagging/insulation materials would have been disturbed; the material content of that repair is inference, not record.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-238/Flamingo. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Wooden hull means a smaller insulation inventory than a steel steam combatant, but diesel-exhaust lagging and gaskets were still asbestos-bearing in the era. Does not establish materials aboard, individual exposure, or present-day presence.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS YMS-238 / Flamingo (AMS-11 / MSC(O)-11) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener API v4 returned ZERO results for all four base queries - "USS Flamingo" opinion, "USS Flamingo" docket, "YMS-238" opinion, "YMS-238" docket (2026-10-04) - no qualifying case, no other litigation, and no name collisions surfaced; asbestos-qualified variants were not needed (a zero base result implies a zero variant).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. CourtListener zeroes cover the indexed opinion and RECAP docket corpora for the exact phrases searched - they do not reach unindexed state dockets or cases that reference the ship only inside filings. Deck logs (11 volumes, 1943-45) are undigitized and remain the lead for wartime operations and the post-explosion repair record. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
