Documented for this hull: YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper; laid down 6 November 1941 by the Greenport Basin and Construction Co., Long Island, NY; launched 10 January 1942; completed 25 May 1942; 'Struck a mine 16 August 1944 off St. Tropez, France and sank at 43 deg 25' N, 06 deg 43' E'; struck from the Navy list 16 September 1944. Specs: displacement 270 t.; length 136'; beam 24' 6"; draft 8'; speed 15 kts.; complement 32; one 3"/50 DP mount, two 20mm, two depth-charge projectors; two 880bhp GM 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. CO listing: LTJG Samuel R. Pruitt, USNR, 25 May 1942 - 16 August 1944. Page states there is no DANFS history for YMS-24. Photo captions place her in the Gulf of Salerno 9 September 1943 (U.S. Army Signal Corps / NARA) and show her crew prior to the invasion of Southern France (Azous collection).

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track official records here (NARA log coverage, Navy loss table, award citation all corroborate) but are individually unverified against primary logs. Narrative notes that Executive Officer John Richard Cox (actor John Howard) 'took over command' after the blast 'killed her captain' - consistent with the official Navy Cross citation but unadjudicated in detail. Contains no asbestos content.

Secondary compilation; its single source citation is the defective hazegray 'yms24.htm' DANFS transcription, so its commanding-officer line (Lt. B. F. Silviern, USNR, from 28 Feb 1944) belongs to the conflated YMS-324/Gull record and is NOT this hull's officer - see ev-uss-yms-24-yms24-08. Build and loss data corroborate NavSource and the Navy loss table independently of that defect. No asbestos content.

Official Navy loss table entry for this hull: 'YMS 24 | 43 23 N, 6 43 E | 16 Aug. 1944' - the YMS rows run in the table's miscellaneous-district-craft columns. The same table lists PT 202 and PT 218 lost at the identical position and date (43 23 N, 6 43 E, 16 Aug. 1944) - co-located same-action losses consistent with the Navy Cross citation's 'rescue vessel alongside' that struck a second mine.

Position differs by two minutes of latitude from NavSource/uboat (43 deg 23' vs 43 deg 25' N). The PT-boat co-location is documented fact; identifying either PT as the citation's rescue craft is inference, not established. No asbestos content.

    Finding
Official award text documents the sinking circumstances for this hull: on 16 August 1944, 'during minesweeping operations in support of the invasion of Southern France,' the ship's 'bow had been blown off by a mine'; the commanding officer 'became a casualty'; XO Cox took charge, directed removal of the wounded, searched every compartment for trapped men; 'another mine exploded under the stern of one of the rescue vessels alongside,' and Cox jumped between 'the two foundering craft' to rescue a critically injured man. Cox (film actor John Howard) received the Navy Cross; NavSource adds the French Croix de Guerre.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
IDENTITY CORRECTION: the hazegray 'yms24.htm' page transcribes the DANFS 'Gull II' entry with the hull number rendered as 'YMS-24' throughout. The real DANFS entry (NHHC, live) describes a different ship: launched as YMS-324 by the Al Larson Boat Shop, Terminal Island, CA, 14 October 1943; commissioned 28 February 1944 (Lt. B. F. Silviera, USNR); Pacific service - San Pedro departure 20 June 1944, Guadalcanal 1 August, Peleliu mine sweep 14 September, Ngulu, Okinawa; redesignated Gull (AMS-16) 18 February 1947; AMCU-46 (1954); MHC-46 (1955); decommissioned San Diego 14 January 1958, disposed March 1959. NavSource's Gull page (05016.htm) confirms ex-YMS-324. A ship mid-Pacific in August 1944 cannot be the hull mined off St. Tropez - the page conflates two YMS casualties' identities, and uboat.net's CO line for this hull inherited the defect. This record's YMS-24 is the Greenport-built hull sunk 16 August 1944, never named.

    Finding
A wooden-hulled, diesel-driven yard minesweeper built November 1941 - May 1942 at a small yacht yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this period: diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve and machinery packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on winches/windlass. No steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, so the asbestos footprint is materially smaller than that of steam-driven hulls.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-24 (YMS-24) was found in the public sources searched. A hull sunk in combat in 1944 has no abatement/donation/disposal tail to document. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. CAVEAT: CourtListener queries could not be run this session - the authenticated helper returned the fleet pace-stand-down on every spaced attempt across ~55 minutes (18:06-19:02 CDT, 8+ attempts); logged as blocked in search_ledger, NOT a negative result.
