NavSource timeline for this hull (call sign Nan-Fox-Vice-Jig): laid down 6 November 1942 by the Bellingham Marine Railway and Boat Building Co., Bellingham, WA; launched 4 February 1943; completed 20 August 1943; damaged by a mine 25 February 1945 off Peleliu, Palaus Islands; 'sunk in typhoon Louise off Okinawa 9 October 1945'; hulk destroyed December 1945; struck from the Naval Register 3 January 1946. Spec block: displacement 270 t; length 136'; beam 23'4"; draft 8'7"; speed 14 kts; complement 60; armament one 3"/50 DP mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge tracks, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two 800 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Commanding officers listed: LT J. P. Wilkowski, USNR (1945) and LTJG R. M. Dorsey, USNR (1945). Page states 'There is no DANFS History currently available for YMS-275.'

Bellingham yard construction trades (1942-43); crew (1943-45)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track official records and are corroborated here by NHHC and NARA rows, but spec figures (complement 60, 800 bhp engines) conflict with secondary class references (32, lower bhp) and no primary spec sheet was located. 'Sunk' summarizes the NHHC disposition 'grounded - beyond economical repair; strip, abandonment.' Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding
DANFS's Argonne entry places this hull physically alongside the fleet repair flagship at Kossol Roads, Palaus: 'While anchored in berth 74, Kossol Roads, the ship again suffered damage at the hands of friendly ships. YMS-275 lay alongside to the port side, aft; YMS-38 and SC-702 to the port side, forward.' An LCVP fouled its ramp in SC-702's depth-charge rack and wrenched loose a 300-pound depth charge; the underwater explosion 'lifted Argonne bodily several inches' and jarred two more charges loose (which did not explode). Window: after Argonne's arrival at Kossol Passage 15 December 1944 and before her departure for Leyte 11 February 1945.

    Limitations
Ship-specific presence and incident documentation only: establishes YMS-275 moored alongside Argonne at Kossol Roads during the Dec 1944 - Feb 1945 window and present at a documented accidental depth-charge detonation; does not state whether YMS-275 itself sustained damage in that explosion. No asbestos or material content.

    Finding

Dorsey (USNR) (R)' - matching NavSource's commanding-officer entries for 1945. Establishes the hull remained on the active fleet roster after its February mine damage and through the Okinawa campaign period.

    Finding
The official CINCPOA report extract documents Typhoon 'Louise' striking Okinawa 9 October 1945 with 80-knot winds and 30-35 ft seas in the constricted Buckner Bay (Nakagusuku Wan): 12 ships and craft sunk, 222 grounded, 32 severely damaged; personnel casualties 36 killed, 47 missing, 100 seriously injured. Appendix III ('Typhoon Damage at Okinawa. Based Upon Progress Reports to 19 November') lists this hull verbatim: 'YMS 275 - Grounded - Beyond economical repair. Strip, abandonment.' ComServDiv 104 under Commodore T. J. Keliher was assigned salvage work; by 19 November 79 ships had been refloated and 132 were under repair.

    Limitations
Ship-specific official disposition: 'grounded - beyond economical repair; strip, abandonment' - NavSource's 'sunk in typhoon Louise' is the same event in summary form; the hulk was destroyed December 1945 and the hull struck 3 January 1946 (see ev-01). Finding
NARA Special List 44 records US Navy deck logs for YMS-275 covering 8/20/1943-12/7/1945 - coverage beginning at the hull's completion date and extending two months past the 9 October 1945 typhoon loss, consistent with administrative logging of the grounded/stripped hulk through its December 1945 destruction. The logs are paper-era holdings; YMS-275 does not appear in NARA's list of digitized deck logs.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A wooden-hulled diesel yard minesweeper built 1942-43 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel craft of this type were diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation in confined below-deck spaces. As a diesel vessel she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, and the wooden hull means no hull-insulation pathway of steel combatants; residual exposure pathways are machinery-space and maintenance-disturbance.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-275 (YMS-275) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener partial coverage: the 'YMS-275' opinion query ran (count 56 fuzzy-match results; all 20 returned hits reviewed - zero genuine 'YMS-275' mentions, every hit a tokenizer name-collision, none asbestos litigation); the docket query and the 'USS YMS-275' name variants were blocked by the fleet pacing limit at every attempt - logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos' material is law-firm listicle content asserting asbestos aboard Navy minesweepers generically (mesotheliomahope, mesotheliomavets, mesothelioma.com and similar) without hull-specific primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is partially open (opinion index queried with no qualifying hit; docket index and name variants blocked by fleet pacing). Deck logs (NARA RG 24, coverage 8/20/1943-12/7/1945), builder construction specs, and any salvage/strip records for the grounded hulk are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
