- Finding
- NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down 13 January 1942 as YMS-28 by the Greenport Basin and Construction Co., Long Island, NY; launched 31 March 1942; completed 17 July 1942; transferred to France 14 October 1944 and named Auberpine (D 315); sold to France 21 March 1949; struck from the Navy Register 28 April 1949; reclassified D-17 and M-657 in French service; transferred to South Vietnam 12 February 1954 and renamed Ham Tu (HQ-11); scrapped 1958. NavSource states: 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-28.'

- Population
- Crew of ~32 (complement figure, class-standard)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a maintained secondary photo-archive, not a primary record; no DANFS entry exists against which to cross-check. 'Completed' 17 July 1942 is reported as 'commissioned' by uboat.net - commissioning wording unverified against a commissioning document. Specifications listed are class-standard figures. Does not speak to asbestos conditions aboard.

[3]Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual, NAVPERS 15,790 (Rev. 1953), Part IV, Section 2(16) - World War II area campaign medals, ship-level engagement-star list (HyperWar transcription) [other_primary]
- Locator
- Awards-IV-16.html, ship-level engagement-star list, 'YMS 28' entry; code definitions in Part III list of authorized operations and engagements (E3, E4, E4-1, E7)
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The official ship-level engagement-star list credits YMS-28 with participation in four European-African-Middle Eastern Area operations: E3 Salerno landings (listed 9 Sep 43 - 21 Sep 44 [sic]); E4 West Coast of Italy operations--1944 (listed 22 Jan 44 - 29 Jan 44); E4-1 Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings (listed 9 Feb 44 - 16 Feb 44); and E7 Invasion of Southern France (listed 15 Aug 44 - 25 Sep 44). Under the manual's one-star-per-operation rule for the E4 group, E4 and E4-1 together yield a single star, for three engagement stars in total.

- Population
- YMS-28 crew (~32)
- Limitations
- The published list shows '21 Sep 44' as this hull's E3 end date; the E3 campaign window in Part III of the same manual is 9-21 Sep 43 - the '44' is a probable typographical error carried through the source (a commercial ribbon site reproduces it identically). Documents combat participation, not asbestos conditions.

- Finding
- Special List 44 inventories three deck-log segments for YMS-28 in NARA custody: 7/18/1942-9/30/1942, 5/25/1943-10/31/1943, and 12/1/1943-10/14/1944 - the third segment ending on the date of transfer to France.

- Limitations
- Inventory coverage only - the log contents were not examined. The logs are not digitized: this hull does not appear on NARA's list of deck logs available in the National Archives Catalog (checked 2026-10-04). Coverage gaps 10/1/1942-5/24/1943 and 11/1/1943-11/30/1943 are inventory gaps, not evidence of no service. These paper logs are the primary day-to-day record of this hull's U.S. Navy operations.

- Finding
- Class context: 561 wooden-hulled, 136-foot motor minesweepers were built 1942-45 at 35 small yacht and boat yards rather than large shipyards; the type carried General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts; YMS-1 through YMS-134 (the group containing YMS-28) were the two-stack variant (NavSource class index). Roughly 30 YMS were transferred to the Free French Navy in 1944 - YMS-28 was among them (Shipbuilding History).

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wood-hulled motor minesweeper built in 1942 carries no steam plant: the asbestos-relevant systems aboard a vessel of this type and period were not boiler or steam-line lagging but era-standard small-craft applications - diesel exhaust lagging, engine and machinery gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on the sweeping winch and windlass. Wood construction and a compact diesel plant give this type a materially smaller asbestos-relevant equipment set than steam-powered hulls of the same era.

[8]Batch-8907 search ledger (this record): NavSource hull page and class index; NAVPERS 15,790 ship-level engagement-star list; NARA Special List 44 ship-number PDF and digitized-log list; NHHC/DANFS; Naval Vessel Register; CourtListener API v4; uboat.net and Shipbuilding History corroboration; secondary web litigation sweep [other_primary]
- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-yms-28-01 through sl-uss-yms-28-12
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming YMS-28 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). A secondary web sweep surfaced no qualifying material - not even the law-firm marketing listicles that assert asbestos aboard better-documented hulls. All four base CourtListener queries are complete: "USS YMS-28" opinion and docket and "YMS-28" opinion returned 0 results; the "YMS-28" docket query returned one name collision (Time, Inc. v. Budd, 1:08-cv-07392, S.D.N.Y. 2008, a magazine-publishers copyright action with no vessel or asbestos connection). No qualifying asbestos litigation names this hull.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. The litigation repository search is complete at the base-query level (three 0-result queries, one name collision; see search_ledger). The hull's NARA deck logs (undigitized) and any surviving builder or French/South Vietnamese records are open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
