- Finding
- Government sources describe asbestos use in Navy shipbuilding and shipboard systems at a program or fleet level. GAO HRD-80-2 reproduces a 1979 Navy statement describing asbestos in Navy ship thermal insulation, deck tile, cabling, galleys, gaskets, packing, brakes, and clutches; NAVSEA inactive-ship guidance states that past naval shipbuilding programs used asbestos extensively, including thermal insulation and deck tile. This is general context only; these documents do not identify YMS-294.

- Limitations
- Program/fleet-level context only, including records postdating YMS-294’s Navy service. It does not show the class, builder, or hull had asbestos; it does not support an inference that asbestos was aboard YMS-294, identify any installed product or quantity, or establish present condition, exposure, or causation.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or asbestos statement was located in the checked official DANFS entry or NARA logbook index. Litigation review was not completed: the authenticated CourtListener helper refused a request at the fleet pacing gate before sending it, and no anonymous or alternate CourtListener request was made.
