    Finding
NavSource's YMS-297 page identifies this hull as a YMS-1 class auxiliary motor minesweeper. It records laying down on 7 January 1943 by Tacoma Boat Building Co. at Tacoma, Washington; launching on 24 April 1943; completion on 20 September 1943; striking from the Naval Register on 8 October 1946; transfer to the War Shipping Administration in February 1948; and final fate as unknown. It lists 270 tons displacement, a 136-foot length, 24-foot 6-inch beam, 8-foot draft, 15-knot speed, complement 32, and two 880-bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts.

    Population
Ship's company; NavSource lists complement 32
    Limitations
NavSource is a live photo-archive compilation rather than a Navy commissioning record or complete service file. The page does not give a commissioning date, decommissioning date, service narrative, or asbestos information; the diesel specification does not establish the presence or absence of asbestos-containing components. No DANFS history is available on the page.

    Finding

    Limitations
This is a custody/coverage index, not the deck logs themselves. The indexed dates are not asserted as commissioning or decommissioning dates and do not identify asbestos, products, repair work, exposure, or causation. The logs were not examined for this record.

    Finding
GAO reported in 1979 that it reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, including the use of asbestos in Navy ships, removal costs, and policies for replacing damaged or repair-affected asbestos insulation with nonasbestos material.

    Population
Navy shipyard workers and Navy ships discussed at program level
    Limitations
Navy-wide and shipyard-program evidence, not a survey or material record for YMS-297. It does not establish that asbestos was installed, remained aboard, was disturbed, or exposed anyone on this hull.

  5. [5]CourtListener authenticated-search helper diagnostic, batch 8922 (2026-10-04); see search_ledger. [other_primary]
    Locator
    search_ledger entries sl-uss-yms-297-yms297-04 through -07
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The required authenticated CourtListener sweep was not completed. The first base query, exact-name opinion search for USS YMS-297 with limit 20, entered the fleet-wide pacing wait and was stopped; the exact-name docket and YMS-297 opinion/docket queries were not issued. No asbestos-qualified variants were run. This record therefore makes no negative litigation finding.

A blocked or stopped search is an access gap, not evidence that no case exists. This row does not establish the presence or absence of asbestos litigation, exposure, causation, liability, or legal eligibility.

    search_ledger entries sl-uss-yms-297-yms297-01 through -07
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, product identification, or materials specification naming YMS-297 was located in the public sources retained for this record. NARA's unexamined deck logs remain the principal hull-specific archival lead.

    Research performed 2026-10-04
    Limitations
This is a bounded negative search result, not proof that asbestos was absent aboard the hull. The deck logs were not examined, the CourtListener sweep is incomplete, and nonpublic records may contain relevant information.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Archival leads for hull-level follow-up are the NARA Navy deck-log series indexed by Special List 44 and Bureau of Ships design, construction, and engineering records for the YMS-1 class and Tacoma Boat Building Co.; no such underlying hull file was retrieved in this batch.
