- Documented for this hull: laid down 18 March 1941 as YMS-3 by Henry B. Nevins Inc., City Island, NY; launched 13 April 1942; completed 25 April 1942; participated in the Anzio-Nettuno (Italy) operation 22 January - 4 March 1944 as a member of Task Force 81.7 (Sweeper Group); transferred to France 2 October 1944 and named Heliotrope (D-334); sold to France 21 March 1949; struck from the Naval Register 28 April 1949; French reclassifications D-22 and M-662; decommissioned (French) 4 December 1965; fate unknown. Specs per page: 270 t., 136 ft., complement 32, one 3"/50 DP mount, two 20mm, two depth-charge projectors; two General Motors 8-268A diesels, Snow-Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a compiled photo-archive secondary source, not a primary Navy record; French-side service details (D-22/M-662 reclassifications, 1965 decommissioning) are single-sourced here. 'Completed' vs 'commissioned' wording for 25 April 1942 differs across sources. Contains no asbestos information.

[3]National Archives Special List 44: List of Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships, Stations, and Miscellaneous Units, 1801-1947 (NARA, 1978), printed page 508 - scanned copy hosted by the ACPL Genealogy Center [other_primary]

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 inventories 5 logbooks for YMS-3 in the National Archives, covering two spans: June 16, 1942 - July 31, 1943, and December 1, 1943 - September 30, 1944. Deck logs are the primary-source record of this hull's operations, locations, and shipboard conditions during essentially the whole of her US Navy service, ending two days before the 2 October 1944 transfer to France. These logs are NOT digitized: YMS-3 does not appear on NARA's 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' list (checked 2026-10-04). The August-November 1943 window is absent from the inventoried spans.

- 1942-06-16 to 1944-09-30 (logbook coverage)
- Population
- US Navy crew of YMS-3 (named individuals in muster sections of logs)
- Limitations
- Inventories logbooks only - establishes that primary deck logs exist at NARA but says nothing about their content, and nothing about asbestos. Logs are undigitized; retrieval requires NARA reference request. The Aug-Nov 1943 gap means no logbook coverage exists for that window in this inventory.

[4]Secretary of the Navy citation awarding the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Frank Joseph Kelly, Gunner's Mate First Class, USNR (scanned original, NavSource photo collection) [other_primary]

- Finding
- Secretary of the Navy citation (signed John L. Sullivan, Acting): 'For heroic conduct while attached to the U.S.S. YMS-3 following the sinking of a British landing ship during action in the Anzio-Nettuno Area, Italy, on January 26, 1944' - Kelly went over the side of YMS-3 in heavy seas and contributed to the recovery of twelve survivors. A companion newspaper clipping (Apr 4, 1945; same NavSource collection) reports the survivors included members of the 83rd Chemical Battalion, US Army, and that Kelly served in European waters March 1943 - April 1944. The sunken ship is identifiable as HM LST-422, a British-manned landing ship mined off Anzio early 26 January 1944 carrying the 83rd Chemical Battalion and 68th Coast Artillery (NavSource LST-422 page).

- YMS-3 crew; rescued LST-422 survivors (83rd Chemical Battalion, 68th Coast Artillery)
- Limitations
- Primary award document hosted on a secondary site; confirms YMS-3's presence in the Anzio-Nettuno area on the cited date but contains no asbestos or material information. The LST-422 identification is correlation (matching date, location, and the 83rd Chemical Battalion), not stated in the citation itself.

- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's construction (1941-42) and entire US Navy service era (1942-44).

[6]NavSource Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper (YMS) photo index - class background: 561 wood-hulled minesweepers of essentially the same 136-ft design built at 35 yacht yards, 1942-45; YMS-1 prototype designed and built by Henry B. Nevins Inc., City Island [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource YMS index page (class overview); spec block on 11/19003
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era-consistent inference only: a wooden-hulled, diesel-driven yard minesweeper of 1941-42 construction would carry the era-standard small-craft asbestos applications - exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, and incidental insulation materials - rather than the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels. The class's wooden hull and General Motors diesel plant (no steam system) bound the plausible scope.

- Population
- Nevins yard construction workers (1941-42); YMS-3 crew (~32)
- Limitations
- INFERENCE - no ship-specific or class-specific asbestos manifest exists. Does not establish presence, quantity, or condition of asbestos aboard this hull; the wooden hull and diesel plant reduce (do not eliminate) plausible applications relative to steam ships.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming YMS-3 / Heliotrope was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). There is no DANFS entry for this hull (NavSource states 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-3'; NHHC index confirmed 404 this session). CourtListener: 3 of 4 base queries ran and returned zero results; the fourth ('YMS-3' docket) could not be run - fleet pacing stood the session down across ~25 minutes of spaced retries.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built inside the Navy's asbestos-use era. The docket-side CourtListener check is partially open (one query blocked, not a clean negative). The undigitized NARA deck logs (5 logbooks) and the Mystic Seaport Nevins yard collection are open primary leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
