    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
NavSource's live YMS-300 hull page identifies this vessel as a YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper: laid down 15 June 1942 by William F. Stone and Son, Oakland, CA; launched 7 December 1942; completed 3 July 1943; struck from the Naval Register 7 February 1947; transferred to the War Shipping Administration in March 1948; fate unknown. The page gives call sign Nan-Peter-Easy-Zebra, captions an NHHC photograph (NH 81015) showing the ship in San Francisco Bay circa 1945-1946, and states that no DANFS history is currently available for YMS-300.

William F. Stone and Son construction trades; YMS-300 crew; post-Navy custodians
    Limitations
NavSource is a specialist photographic/archive compilation rather than a Navy register or DANFS entry; the page does not give a formal commissioning date, detailed service narrative, or final post-WSA disposition. It contains no asbestos or material-content statement.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The National Archives Special List 44, by Ship Numbers, lists TWO YMS-300 deck-log coverage rows on the same page: 3 July 1943 - 12 September 1943, and 13 September 1943 - 30 June 1945. Together they inventory logs spanning the hull's completion date through the end of the war in the Pacific. The entries are an archival inventory of log coverage; they do not assert commissioning or decommissioning dates.

    Population
YMS-300 crew and Navy operational activity during the indexed log period
    Limitations
This is a finding aid, not the deck-log text. The logs were not retrieved or read, and the index entries contain no asbestos, insulation, exposure, or individual-service finding. Per NARA's own asbestos research guide, deck logs provide no direct evidence of asbestos. The batch prompt cited only the first row (through 9/12/1943); the second row extending coverage to 6/30/1945 is documented here.

    YMS-300 specifications block
    Finding type

    Finding
The hull page lists specifications for YMS-300: 270 tons displacement; 136 feet length; 24 feet 6 inches beam; 8 feet draft; 15-knot speed; complement 32; one 3-inch/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20-mm mounts, and two depth-charge projectors; two 880-bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines through Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear to two shafts.

    Population
    YMS-300 crew and machinery personnel
    Limitations
The listed complement is a specification figure, not a dated muster count. Diesel machinery and the absence of a steam plant in this source constrain the plausible system context but do not establish asbestos content in any component.

    Locator
Mine Squadron TWENTY and minecraft vessel rosters; no YMS-300 entry anywhere in document (YMS 299 at its roster position, YMS 301 and YMS 302 likewise listed)
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The official United States Pacific Fleet Organization document dated 1 May 1945 (HyperWar transcription of the NHHC publication) does not list YMS-300 anywhere in its order of battle, while enumerating approximately 170 other YMS hulls under the minecraft sections - including the adjacent hull numbers YMS-299, YMS-301, and YMS-302. YMS-300's absence from the enumerated roster is documented; the document does not state where the ship was assigned on that date.

YMS-300 crew (assignment context, May 1945)
    Limitations
Absence from an enumerated fleet-organization roster is a fact about the document, not proof of the ship's location or status on that date - the document does not enumerate vessels under local commands such as the Hawaiian Sea Frontier or naval districts, and training or local-assignment duty would not appear. The live NHHC URL for this publication returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-04; the verbatim HyperWar transcription was used. No asbestos content.

RG 19 Entry P 11 series listing; 'Other Records and their usefulness' deck-log/muster-roll paragraph (page last reviewed March 2, 2022)
    Finding type
    regulatory
    Finding
NARA's official research guide identifies RG 19 Bureau of Ships records - including Entry P 11, Minesweeper and Minelayer General Information Books (1940-1962) - plus specification files and engineering drawings as the archival pathways for researching asbestos aboard U.S. Navy vessels through 1961. The guide states that Navy deck logs and muster rolls (RG 24) 'do not provide any information on the use of or presence of asbestos in Navy ships or ship components and therefore provide no direct evidence of asbestos.' These records are the appropriate next archival lead for YMS-300; no such hull-level file was retrieved for this record.

U.S. Navy vessel material records, 1941-1961
    Limitations
This row documents a research path, not the existence of asbestos aboard YMS-300. The cited guide does not substitute for retrieving the hull/class specifications, drawings, or correspondence, and it expressly prevents treating the Special List 44 deck-log entries as asbestos evidence.

    Locator
Outfitting page, asbestos paragraph under Description and respiratory-damage paragraph under Associated Hazards (page retrieved via firecrawl; direct fetch returned HTTP 403)
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
OSHA's shipbuilding and ship-repair guidance for outfitting states that asbestos was used in two outfitting operations: (1) insulating piping and exhaust manifolds, and (2) fireproofing, combined with other linings, for living and working areas; it further states that severe exposures occur during repair when insulation is removed. This is relevant early-1940s shipbuilding context for a 1942-43 Navy minesweeper built at a commercial yard.

    Limitations
General shipyard guidance, not a YMS-300 record. It does not establish that any listed product was installed aboard this wooden-hulled minesweeper, does not establish quantity or condition, and does not establish an individual's exposure or causation.

    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO's 1979 review of Navy efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure documents that the Navy used asbestos insulation aboard ships, that its 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for necessary repairs, and that the policy was modified in 1979 to include selectively replacing asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas.

Program-level Navy evidence, not a YMS-300 record. Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the public sources searched for YMS-300: the NavSource hull page, NARA deck-log finding aid, 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization, NARA asbestos research guide, OSHA outfitting guidance, and GAO Navy-wide review provide no YMS-300 asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, product identification, or adjudicated exposure finding. Ship-specific asbestos status is therefore unknown.

    Limitations
A failure to locate a public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard the hull. Undigitized RG 19 Entry P 11 minesweeper general-information books, specification files, and engineering drawings remain open leads. This negative finding does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
