- YMS-1 class auxiliary motor minesweeper: laid down 7 December 1942 by William F. Stone and Son, Oakland, CA; launched 12 June 1943; completed and commissioned 5 November 1943; struck from the Naval Register 22 January 1948; transferred to the War Shipping Administration June 1948; registered in 1950 to the Indian Towing Co. of New Orleans, LA as the tug Cherokee; fate unknown. Call sign Nan-Peter-Fox-William. Specifications: 270 t (253 t in 1950 registry); 136 ft (125.2 ft 1950); beam 24 ft 6 in (24.8 ft 1950); draft 8 ft (11.6 ft 1950); 15 kts; complement 32 (10 in 1950); armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; propulsion two 1,000-shp General Motors diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Commanding officer listed: LTJG E. B. Adams, USNR (1945). Page states explicitly: 'There is no DANFS history available for YMS-302.' Corroborated on build/commission/strike dates by uboat.net warship entry (adds 'ordered 27 Mar 1942') and the Shipbuilding History YMS yard list.

- Finding
- National Archives Special List 44 inventories U.S. Navy deck logs for YMS-302 covering 11/5/1943-6/30/1945 (verified on PDF page 118). The NARA catalog separately holds the digitized deck-log file unit 'YMS-302, 11/5/43-7/7/47' (NAID 193034778; 214 images, digitized via Ancestry), extending documented log coverage to 7 July 1947.

- Limitations
- Log-coverage dates are inventory metadata, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates; log content was not read beyond the inventory level (individual images not transcribed this session). Coverage ending 7/7/1947 does not itself prove the ship remained in commission to that date.

- The ship's own anti-aircraft action reports (CominCh Form F-01 AA-1) place USS YMS-302 off Saipan Island during the Marianas operation. Night action 17 June 1944 (zone -10): three Kate-97-type planes observed, one attacked the ship; YMS-302 fired 5 rounds of 3"/50 AA (fuse 22-4, lot 64, det 17-2) and 110 rounds of 20mm; the ship was strafed by .30-cal fire and observed splashes a few feet ahead of the bow; no planes claimed downed. Second action at 0530 on 18 June 1944: a single Sonia-98-type plane engaged with one 3"/50, one 20mm, and one .50-cal machine gun (4, 120, and 150 rounds expended); the .50-cal jammed for roughly 30 seconds; the plane banked off at about 300 yards and was observed gliding low over LSTs; several 20mm bursts observed to hit the plane, damage doubtful. - Finding
- YMS-302 is a wooden-hulled, diesel-powered minesweeper built November 1942-June 1943 inside the documented WWII asbestos-shipbuilding era. With no boilers or steam plant aboard the type, the asbestos-relevant systems are not boiler/turbine lagging but era-standard small-craft applications: engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation.

- William F. Stone and Son yard workers (Oakland, 1942-43); ship's company 1943-1947; Pearl Harbor Navy Yard overhaul workers August 1945
- Limitations
- Era-consistent inference only - no YMS-1 class insulation schedule, bill of materials, or hull-specific record was located, and small wooden diesel craft carried far less insulating material than steam vessels. Does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's use of asbestos insulation in ships and the 1975-1979 Navy policies for removing/replacing damaged asbestos insulation during ship repair - program-level confirmation that asbestos insulation was standard aboard Navy ships of this era and that the Navy managed it as an occupational hazard. - Locator
- War-diary signature blocks; NavSource CO table and spec block; uboat.net class/477 technical table; Wikipedia YMS-1 class article (secondary, cross-check only)
- Finding type

- Finding
- Commanding-officer discrepancy: NavSource lists only LTJG E. B. Adams, USNR (1945), but the August and October 1945 war diaries are signed 'J. L. Hall' and the November 1945 diary 'R. L. Whalin' over 'Commanding Officer'/'Commanding' - the primary signature blocks are carried over the secondary listing. Propulsion-figure conflict: NavSource prints 'two 1,000-shp General Motors diesel engines'; the YMS-1 class figure in secondary literature is 2 x 440-bhp GM 8-268A diesels (~880 bhp total); uboat.net lists '2,000 HP' for the class. NavSource's per-ship figure is carried with the conflict noted.
