    Finding type

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logs held for YMS-313 covering 6/12/1943 - 11/30/1945 (RG 24, Bureau of Naval Personnel records, National Archives at College Park). The coverage window begins on her completion/commissioning date (12 June 1943) and ends 30 November 1945 - these are log-coverage dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. YMS-313 does not appear on NARA's list of digitized deck logs available in the National Archives Catalog (the digitized YMS entries are the hulls later named under the AMS/MSCO program); the logs are an undigitized primary record of her full commissioned career.

Inventory listing only - establishes that deck logs exist and their date coverage, not their content. Log coverage is not proof of commissioning/decommissioning dates. The deck logs themselves are undigitized (not on the NARA online list); no page-level content reviewed this session.

Construction trades at Harbor Boat Building (1942-43); crew (1943-c.1945); XO LT Herbert R. Gohmann (1946)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR-style data but yard reference tables conflict on the struck year (1946 vs 1947; see gaps). Contains no asbestos or material content. The May 1946 photo documents presence at Subic Bay, not activity status.

Four combat operations name this hull, all under Lt.(jg) W.H. Reibold, USNR: (1) Cebu landings, Operation Victor II (26-28 March 1945) - Task Unit 78.2.9 minesweeping unit with YMS-68 (group commander Lt. G.L. O'Neil), YMS-9, YMS-46, YMS-52, YMS-339, YMS-340, YMS-481; swept area 'Orchestra', Olango Channel, and the southern Cebu Harbour approaches (area 'Stagedoor') to 15 feet, all negative results; (2) Tarakan landings, Operation Oboe I (27 April - 5 May 1945) - Task Group 78.1.5 minesweeping unit (11 YMS plus high-speed transport Cofer); swept magnetic and contact mines in areas 'Fork', 'Spoon', 'Knife', 'Plate' and approach tracks before P-Day 1 May; departed for Morotai 5 May; (3) Brunei landings, Operation Oboe VI (7-10 June 1945) - Task Unit 78.1.54 Sweep Unit Four with YMS-6, YMS-259, YMS-314; heavy sweeping off Brunei Bay and the Miri-Lutong area where USS Salute (AM-294) was mined and sunk 8 June with 6 killed; (4) Lutong landings (20 June 1945) - YMS-313 among the minesweepers screening the task unit's return to Brunei Bay 21 June.

    Limitations
uboat.net is a specialist secondary database compiling official action-report/war-diary material - the task-group rosters and sweep results transcribe Navy operational reports, but this record relies on the compilation, not the underlying document images. Documents minesweeping service only; no asbestos or material content. Individual mine-sweep counts are attributed to the group, not to this hull specifically.

shipbuildinghistory.com Harbor Boat Building table, row hull no. 161 (YMS 313)
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The builder's production table lists YMS-313 as yard hull no. 161, US Navy minesweeper, 278 tons deadweight, 136 feet, delivered 12-Jun-43, disposition 'Struck 1946'. Harbor Boat Building Co. was founded by Romolo Rados in 1919 at Terminal Island; after WWII it traded as Harco, was sold to LTV (1959) and Omega-Alpha (1971), and closed in the 1970s. The same yard built sister YMS hulls 117-120, 313-316, 393-396, and 473-474.

    Limitations
Independent secondary yard register (compiled from yard and government records; the compiler credits John Gregory Rados for the 1925-44 record). The 'Struck 1946' disposition conflicts with the 10 June 1947 strike date carried by NavSource and uboat.net - carried here as the documented variant, resolved in gaps toward the more specific dated entry. No asbestos or material content.

Class context for this hull: 'The wood-hulled YMS proved to be one of the U.S. Navy's more durable and versatile types' - 561 yard minesweepers were built at 35 U.S. yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes) beginning with YMS-1, laid down 4 March 1941 at Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY. YMS-135 through -445, 480 and 481 (which includes this hull) carried one stack. Class-level specifications on the index: length overall 136', extreme beam 24'6", displacement 320 tons, max draft 6'1", complement 33, one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount and two 20mm mounts, designed speed 12 knots, General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts, designed shaft horsepower 880. Surviving YMS were reclassified as AMS and given bird names in 1947 - YMS-313, disposed overseas, never received one.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A wood-hulled, diesel-driven minesweeper delivered in June 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications on a small wooden diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wood hull and small machinery spaces imply a substantially smaller insulation footprint than a steam combatant.

Harbor Boat Building construction trades (1942-43); engine-room and maintenance crew (1943-c.1946); any yard/base trades during in-theater availabilities
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-313. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no ship-proven presence. The small craft's reduced systems footprint makes the inference weaker than for steam-powered hulls of the same era.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, VA/BVA decision, or docketed case naming YMS-313 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only 'asbestos aboard' material for YMS-class hulls is law-firm marketing listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it is consistent with both genuinely light insulation fit and simple non-digitization of small-craft records. CourtListener status recorded in the ledger. Undigitized deck logs (RG 24) and builder records at NARA remain open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
