- NavSource is the de facto compiled record for unnamed numbered craft and concurs with the official Naval Chronology on the mine damage; it is a secondary compilation - underlying primary records are the deck logs (Special List 44) and action reports (uboat.net transcription). Establishes vessel history only; contains no asbestos information.

- Official Navy chronology entry for 30 June 1945, under 'United States naval vessels damaged, Balikpapan area, Borneo': 'Minesweeper YMS-314, by mine, 01 d. 18' S., 116 d. 51' E.' - corroborating the NavSource damage entry. The same entry lists destroyer Smith (DD-378) damaged by coastal defense gun nearby.

- Finding
- Special List 44 inventories four YMS-314 deck logbooks covering 15 July 1943 - 30 June 1945, listed under 'Ships with Symbol and Number Designations' at printed page 518 (scan image 550). The coverage begins on the completion/in-service date and ends on the date of the Balikpapan mine damage.

- Population
- Officers/crew named in deck logs, 1943-1945
- Limitations
- The finding aid establishes that the logs exist and their span; the logs themselves were not examined - they are the research lead, not a conclusion. End-date coinciding with the mine-damage date does not prove the ship left service that day; later-period logs may simply fall outside this accession. No asbestos content. The batch brief's 'PDF page 118' refers to a different pagination of the same publication; the verified printed page is 518.

- Documents YMS-314 (Lt.(jg) J.W. Easton, USNR) in the TG 78.1.5 minesweeping group under Lt.Cdr. T.R. Fonick, USNR at Tarakan (Oboe I, landings 1 May 1945; sweeping group departed Leyte 22 April, on objective 27 April); in Sweep Unit Four (TU 78.1.54, with YMS-6, YMS-259, YMS-313) at Brunei Bay (Oboe VI, landings 10 June 1945; sister sweeper Salute AM-294 mined and sunk 8 June); and in the YMS unit TU 78.2.92 at Balikpapan (Oboe II), arriving the objective area 22 June 1945 with USS Sentry, USS Scout, YMS-39, YMS-365, and LSM-1. On 30 June 1945 at 0945I YMS-314 'exploded an Allied influence mine about 100 feet astern. She sustained minor damage'; at 1645I she was taken under fire by shore batteries, replied with her 3-inch gun, and USS Hart opened counter-battery fire.

- Finding
- YMS class: wooden-hulled auxiliary motor minesweepers; 561 built at 35 yacht yards (19 West Coast incl. Harbor Boat Building, Terminal Island); all 481 ships of the type shared the same general characteristics - 136 ft, GM 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts (880 bhp), complement ~33; YMS-135 through -445 carried one stack (the configuration of YMS-314). Diesel propulsion, no boilers or steam plant.

- Finding
- Peer-reviewed engineering-journal account (American Society of Naval Engineers) documenting that 'asbestos was once used in U.S. Navy shipboard pipe and machinery thermal insulation and in many other shipboard products,' and that plaintiffs in asbestos suits 'include many who were exposed to asbestos while serving in Navy ships built during and following WWII' - the era of this hull's construction and service.

- Study period
- WWII - postwar construction era
- Population
- WWII-era Navy ship crews and shipyard workers (class context)
- Limitations
- Fleet-level era documentation, not a YMS-class or hull record. The article's dominant pathway - steam-plant pipe and machinery thermal insulation - is largely absent aboard a diesel-propelled wooden minesweeper; the era-typical small-craft applications (exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, joiner materials) are inference, not documented for this hull. Establishes era plausibility only; no quantity, no ship-specific exposure, no legal eligibility.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming YMS-314 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was destroyed in 1948 - no surviving structure exists to survey.
