Documented for this hull: launched as YMS-317 by the South Coast Co., Newport Beach, Calif., 27 February 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Marjorie Boutelle; commissioned 18 November 1943, Lt. John B. Warner in command. After shakedown, swept the San Francisco Bay area until 3 May 1944, then sailed for Pearl Harbor; in the Pacific acted as escort vessel to convoys in back and staging areas - Eniwetok, Saipan, Kwajalein - as well as patrolling and minesweeping. Returned to Pearl Harbor post-war for overhaul; reached Charleston, S.C. via San Pedro and the Panama Canal June 1946 and again underwent overhaul; named Grosbeak and redesignated AMS-14 18 February 1947. Post-war career mostly at the Mine Warfare School, Yorktown, Va., and the Naval Minecraft Base at Charleston as a training ship; experiments at the Naval Mine Countermeasures Station, Panama City, Fla.; exercises along the coast from New England to the Gulf of Mexico; Operation PORTEX in the Caribbean out of Vieques Island, P.R., 24 February - 19 March 1950; February 1951 first of her type Yorktown to Charleston via the intracoastal waterway. Battle Efficiency 'E' 1950, 1951, and 1952. Sailed to Green Cove Springs, Fla. 16 November 1955 (DANFS transcription reads 'Green Springs Cove'); decommissioned there 7 December 1955; hulk approved for disposal 27 October 1959; name struck from the Navy List 1 November 1959. Spec block: 'YMS-317: dp. 270; l. 136'; b. 25'; dr. 8'; s. 15 k.; cpl. 32.'

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS does not mention the 2 January 1947 decommissioning or the 7 February 1955 MSC(O)-14 reclassification carried by NavSource - the entry's narrative implies continuous service as a training ship (see gaps). Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404 on 2026-10-04 (grosbeak-iv.html and grosbeak.html); verbatim transcription via the losthistory.net hazegray mirror used, consistent with standing NHHC link-rot noted since Batch 01.

Specifications: displacement 270 t.; length 136'; beam 24'6"; draft 8'; speed 15 kts.; complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth charge projectors; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Commanding officers listed: LT John B. Warner USNR (18 Nov 1943), LT G. A. Cope Jr. USNR (1945), LTJG Wyatt Eugene Harper Jr. USN (1950-Jun 1952), LTJG James Lloyd Moss USN (Jun 1952-May 1953), LT Cyril J. Hartman Jr. USNR (May 1953). Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but the 2 January 1947 decommissioning is a NavSource-only entry absent from DANFS, whose narrative implies continuous service (see gaps). Beam figure conflicts with DANFS (24'6" vs 25'); engine rating conflicts with class-level sources (880 vs 440 bhp). Contains no asbestos content. The 1961 Paul Langevin conversion and 1963 out-of-documentation date rest on this single source - corroborated only indirectly (shipscribe.com documents a later RV Paul Langevin II operated by the same firm).

NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logs for this hull: the entry 'YMS-317, 11/18/1943 - 6/30/1945' appears on page 118 of the numbered-vessels volume (verified directly in the published PDF). The log run begins on the DANFS-documented commissioning date and covers her San Francisco Bay sweeping duty and the first year of Pacific escort/minesweeping service.

Archival lead only: establishes that deck logs exist in NARA custody for 11/18/1943 - 6/30/1945, not their content - the logs are not digitized and were not read. Log coverage is not a commissioning/decommissioning date assertion. The NARA catalog (catalog.archives.gov) is JS-rendered and could not be fetched this session; whether the run continues past 6/30/1945 in another series was not verified.

Class context: in 1942-45 '35 boatyards turned out 561 wooden-hulled minesweepers' of essentially one design, 136 feet long; the Mk. II subgroup (YMS 135-445) had one stack - this hull's subclass. The build table carries the hull row: 'YMS 317 | South Coast Shipbuilding | Newport Beach CA | 136 | 320 | 18-Nov-43 | Reclassified 1947 as Grosbeak (AMS 14), struck 1959.' Wooden construction is the class-defining feature - built at yacht/boat yards for nonmagnetic minesweeping.

    Finding
A diesel-driven wooden-hulled minesweeper built 1942-43 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard small-craft applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were diesel exhaust lagging, machinery-space gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel boat she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wooden hull implies a smaller installed-insulation footprint than a steel steam vessel of the period. Asbestos aboard this hull is a reasonable era-consistent inference, not a ship-proven fact.

Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or litigation product-identification located for YMS-317/Grosbeak. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution. Wooden-hull construction reduces but does not eliminate likely asbestos applications (exhaust lagging and gaskets remain).

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation record naming YMS-317 / Grosbeak (AMS-14 / MSC(O)-14) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener base queries completed: '"YMS-317"' opinions and dockets both returned count 0 (authenticated API v4, 2026-10-04). The '"Grosbeak"' opinion and docket queries could not be run - five spaced attempts over ~40 minutes all paced out on the shared ~58/hr fleet limiter; logged as blocked (open gap), not as a negative result.

    Finding
STATUS DISCREPANCY (not resolved, flagged): NavSource records a decommissioning on 2 January 1947 - six weeks before the 18 February 1947 naming/reclassification - while DANFS does not mention it and its narrative (Operation PORTEX 1950, Battle Efficiency 'E' awards 1950-1952, training-ship duty) implies continuous service. The likely reconciliation is a brief post-war inactivation followed by return to service (possibly 'in service' rather than 'in commission') for Mine Warfare School duty, but no primary record confirming the 1947-55 status was located; a crew-message note on koreanwar.org asserts 'ALTHOUGH IN COMMISSION' for 1951-53 (unverified secondary). Also flagged: DANFS prints 'Green Springs Cove' for the 16 November 1955 destination - the documented Atlantic Reserve Fleet berthing site is Green Cove Springs, FL (NavSource reads correctly).
