    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories U.S. Navy deck logs for YMS-318 covering 12/30/1943-6/30/1945 (entry: 'YMS-318 12/30/1943 6/30/1945'). This documents WWII Navy service by this hull within the 1930-1986 exposure window; the dates are log coverage, not asserted commissioning or decommissioning dates. Post-1941 logs are held at the National Archives at College Park (Record Group 24).

    Population
Wartime crew (NavSource: complement 32; class index reads 33)
    Limitations
Inventory entry only - the logbooks themselves were not retrieved or reviewed, so nothing in this row speaks to operations, locations, materials, or asbestos. Establishes that logs exist and where; establishes nothing about exposure, and the coverage dates must not be read as commissioning/striking dates.

NavSource record for this hull: YMS-1-class auxiliary motor minesweeper; laid down 23 December 1942 by the South Coast Co., Newport Beach, CA; launched 1 May 1943; completed 30 December 1943; grounded 29 October 1945 at Okinawa; destroyed 27 February 1946; struck from the Naval Register 12 March 1946. Call sign Nan-Peter-Tare-Jig. Commanding officer 1945: LTJG P. E. Wolven, USNR. Specifications on the vessel page: 270 t., 136' length, 24' 6" beam, 8' draft, 15 kts, complement 32, one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; two 880 bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow & Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. NavSource notes no DANFS history exists for YMS-318, and no photograph of the vessel is archived.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-curated archival site, not an official Navy publication; with no DANFS entry, these dates could not be cross-checked against an official history - uboat.net corroborates the three build dates. Contains no asbestos or materials information. Vessel-page specifications conflict with NavSource's own class index (320 t, 33 complement, 12 kts, 6'1" draft) - conflicts carried in gaps. Circumstances of the 1945-10-29 grounding are not stated.

    Finding
Class/era inference: YMS-318 was one of 561 wooden-hulled 136-foot YMS-1-type motor minesweepers built at 35 small yacht yards during WWII. The type was diesel-driven (General Motors 8-268A engines, two shafts) with no steam plant, so era-typical asbestos applications aboard were limited to small-craft uses - exhaust-system lagging, gaskets, valve and machinery packing, and electrical insulation - rather than boiler and steam-line insulation. Insulation, gasket, and packing products of the 1942-43 construction era were commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber. Surviving YMS hulls were reclassified AMS and named in 1947; YMS-318, already lost, was never named or reclassified.

    Limitations
Class/era and construction-era inference only - no source located names materials installed aboard this specific hull, and this row must not be read as 'asbestos documented aboard YMS-318.' The wooden hull and diesel plant bound the plausible scope downward relative to steam vessels. Does not establish quantity, product identity, or any individual exposure.

[5]Batch-8946 search ledger (this record): NHHC DANFS; NARA Special List 44; NavSource vessel and class-index pages; Naval Vessel Register; uboat.net Allied Warships; CourtListener API v4 opinion and docket indexes (authenticated; 3 of 4 base queries completed, 1 blocked by fleet pacing); shipbuilding-table compilations (secondary) [other_primary]

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or docketed case naming YMS-318 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). No DANFS history exists for this hull (NHHC DANFS Y-index carries no entry; the direct DANFS URL returns 404; NavSource notes none). The hull is not in the Naval Vessel Register (stricken 1946, decades before NVR coverage). CourtListener returned no case naming this hull on the opinion index (both exact-name and hull-number variants, 0 hits) or the docket index (unhyphenated variant, 0 hits); the hyphenated docket query was throttled by fleet pacing and is logged as blocked (sl-uss-yms-318-yms318-08), not as a negative result.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1943 construction is squarely within the Navy's asbestos-use era, and the negative reflects a thin documentary trail for a small, early-lost service craft, not affirmative evidence of no asbestos. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Litigation negative is near-complete: one of four CourtListener base queries (hyphenated docket) is blocked, not negative - see gaps.
