- Digitized ship-specific personnel record for this hull: quarterly muster rolls and Reports of Changes for U.S.S. YMS-319, 10 Feb 1944 - 6 Jul 1947. The commissioning-day roll (10 Feb 1944) lists 28 enlisted men by name, service number, and rating - including engine-room rates (MoMM, EM, F) plus GM, SM, QM, PhM, SC, CBM, Y, Cox, S and Stm ratings - under commanding officer Lt.(jg) Robert F. Hellrung, USNR, and executive officer Ens. John A. Chase, USNR; the roll was forwarded 'From: U.S.S. YMS-319, c/o Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, California'. Wartime forwarding sheets carry the censored 'From: OPERATING AREA' location and the pencil annotation 'Comm 2-10-44 to 1-1-47 Final'. The September 1945 Report of Changes records one man transferred to 'U.S. Navy Augmented Hospital #7' and two received 'From R/S, Navy #3030, ComServDiv 104' - personnel routed via a Navy receiving station under a Pacific service-force division. The recapitulation for the quarter ending 1 Jan 1946 shows 30 brought forward, 21 gains, 24 losses, 27 aboard against an operating allowance of 24. By the roll for the period ending October 1946 she carried 7 enlisted under Lt. A. B. Allen Jr., USN, signing as officer-in-charge - caretaker status through the roll's end in July 1947.

- 28 enlisted + officers at commissioning (Feb 1944); ~27-30 wartime crew; 7-man caretaker crew by Oct 1946
- Limitations
- Personnel rosters and change reports only - they establish who was aboard and when, not the ship's station (wartime location fields are censored 'OPERATING AREA') and contain no material or asbestos content. Machinery ratings present in the crew (MoMM, EM, F) are occupational classifications, not exposure evidence. The 'Navy #3030 / ComServDiv 104' routing indicates Pacific service-force logistics but does not name her operating area. 150-frame file unit sampled at frames 0-7, 90, 115, 140, 145, 147-149 - not a frame-by-frame transcription; individual names transcribed from sampled frames only.

- Limitations
- Inventory entry only - establishes that deck logs for this hull exist in the listed coverage window; the dates are log coverage, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates (though 2/10/1944 matches her commissioning-day muster roll exactly). The logs are NOT digitized: no Logbooks-series file unit for YMS-319 was located in the National Archives Catalog on 2026-10-04; physical access at Archives II or a reproduction request is required. Deck logs would resolve her wartime stations and movements.

- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track official records (completion, strike, disposal corroborated against uboat.net and the Naval Marine Archive table) but the 'Struck 1946' variant in the NMA table conflicts on year (see gaps). 'Completed 4 February 1944' is the builder-completion milestone; commissioning-day muster roll is 10 February 1944 (see ev-01). Contains no asbestos content; the 1954 sinking predates modern ACM-handling regulation and no hazmat record was located.

- Finding
- A wooden-hulled diesel minesweeper completed February 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. The YMS-1 class was designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. of City Island NY as a wooden-hulled inshore sweeper - 'the first wooden minesweeper of this class' - with 561 hulls built at 35 small yacht yards; YMS-319 is in the single-stack subgroup (YMS-135 through YMS-445). Era-standard applications aboard a diesel craft of this type and period were engine and exhaust insulation, machinery gaskets, packing, and electrical insulation in machinery spaces. Wooden hull construction and the absence of a steam plant mean a substantially smaller insulation inventory than a steel steam vessel - no boiler/turbine lagging pathway exists.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, insulation schedule, or verified litigation naming USS YMS-319 (YMS-319) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener base queries for the exact name 'USS YMS-319' returned zero results in both the opinion and RECAP docket indexes (2026-10-04); the broader hull-number queries 'YMS-319' (o and r) could not be completed - the fleet-wide pacing budget was exhausted on repeated attempts (helper exit 2, 'pacing budget momentarily spent'); logged as partially blocked, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no ship-specific asbestos content of any kind.
