- Special List #44 ship-number PDF, p. 118 (YMS-32: 5/20/1942 - 12/31/1942; 12/1/1943 - 6/30/1945); digitization status per https://www.archives.gov/research/military/logbooks/navy-online

- Finding
- NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logs held for YMS-32 in TWO coverage blocks: 5/20/1942 - 12/31/1942 and 12/1/1943 - 6/30/1945 (p. 118). The first window opens days after her 14 May 1942 completion; the second ends before her credited Kobe-area post-surrender sweeping (Nov 1945 - Feb 1946) - these are log-coverage dates, not asserted commissioning/decommissioning dates. No log block is inventoried for January - November 1943. YMS-32 does not appear on NARA's list of digitized deck logs in the National Archives Catalog (the digitized YMS entries are the hulls later named under the AMS/MSCO program); the logs are an undigitized primary record held in RG 24 at College Park.

- Limitations
- Inventory listing only - establishes that deck logs exist and their date coverage, not their content. Log coverage is not proof of commissioning/decommissioning dates. The January-November 1943 break in inventoried coverage is unexplained (unaccessioned span vs. out-of-service period cannot be distinguished from the inventory alone). The deck logs themselves are undigitized; no page-level content reviewed this session.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR-style data. The 'two 880bhp' engine phrasing reads as a per-engine rating but conflicts with class-level data (880 shp total designed; 440 bhp per engine - see gaps). Contains no asbestos or material content.

- Finding

[5]Navy and Marine Corps Awards Manual, NAVPERS 15,790 (Rev. 1953), Part IV Section 2-16 - Asiatic-Pacific operation codes (official op windows), via HyperWar; ship-credited participation window per officialmilitaryribbons.com transcription of the same manual's ship eligibility list [other_primary]

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- YMS-32 is credited with one operation: post-surrender minesweeping, Kobe (Honshu Area), operation code P207-9, credited participation window 28 November 1945 - 10 February 1946 (officialmilitaryribbons.com transcription of the NAVPERS 15,790 ship eligibility list). The Awards Manual itself documents the operation: 'Minesweeping Operations Pacific (Only 1 star for participation in 1 or more of the following:) 23Jun45-2Mar46 P207' including 'Kobe (Honshu Area) 28Nov45-9Mar46 P207-9'. No other operation - no Atlantic, Mediterranean, or Pacific combat-period credit - is listed for this hull in the ship list.

- Crew (Nov 1945 - Feb 1946)
- Limitations
- The official manual documents the operation and its window; the ship-level credit relies on a commercial site's verbatim transcription of the manual's ship eligibility list - consistent formatting and codes, but the underlying NAVPERS page images were not independently reviewed this session. Credited-window dates (through 10 Feb 1946) sit inside the official operation window (28 Nov 45 - 9 Mar 46), so the operation attribution is internally consistent. Documents award eligibility for the operation only; no asbestos or material content, and no detail of the ship's activity within the window.

[6]U.S. Navy release 'Kobe Harbor Now Freed of Mines' (John H. Burns), transcribed on HyperWar as an annex to USS Medrick (AMc-203) [other_primary]
- Locator
- HyperWar amc203-Kobe.html, 'Kobe Harbor Now Freed of Mines' release text
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- A wartime Navy release describes the Kobe operation YMS-32 is credited in: 'the clearing of Japan's second largest port Kobe, in one of the Navy's largest minesweeping operations in Japanese waters,' directed by Capt. T. F. Donohue, commander Task Group 52.6, with sixty fleet units sweeping the Osaka Bay area from five weeks prior; the harbor work was done by 'a small flotilla of 36 wooden hulled 136-foot YMS type ships' under Lt. Cmdr. R. V. Lange, USNR, with 'four officers and 30 men aboard each ship,' checked by special 'Guinea Pig' transport ships; B-29-laid mines had closed the port to heavy shipping during the war.

- shipbuildinghistory.com Hiltebrant yard table, YMS-32 row
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The builder's production table lists YMS-32 as US Navy minesweeper, 278 tons, delivered 14-May-42, disposition 'Struck 1946'. The Hiltebrant yard was in operation in WWI and was still building minesweepers in the 1950s; it stood on the south side of the creek in Kingston between Spring Street and Plantasie Avenue (site of the present Rondout Yacht Basin). The same yard built the adjacent YMS block 33-37 (YMS-33 to the USSR 1945 as T-603; YMS-34, -36, -37 to France 1944; YMS-35 struck 1946) plus later YMS-195 through -206 and YMS-442 through -445.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Class context for this hull: 'The wood-hulled YMS proved to be one of the U.S. Navy's more durable and versatile types' - 561 yard minesweepers were built at 35 U.S. yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes) beginning with YMS-1, laid down 4 March 1941 at Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY. YMS-1 through -134 (which includes this hull) carried two stacks; YMS-135 through -445, 480 and 481 had one; YMS-446 through -479 had none. Records show YMS' were used to sweep mines laid by enemy submarines as early as 1942 off Jacksonville, FL and Charleston, SC. Surviving YMS were reclassified as AMS and given bird names in 1947 - YMS-32, struck June 1946, predated the program.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A wood-hulled, diesel-driven minesweeper delivered in May 1942 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications on a small wooden diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wood hull and small machinery spaces imply a substantially smaller insulation footprint than a steam combatant.

- Hiltebrant Dry Dock construction trades (1941-42); engine-room and maintenance crew (1942-1946); any yard/base trades during availabilities including the Kobe occupation period
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-32. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no ship-proven presence. The small craft's reduced systems footprint makes the inference weaker than for steam-powered hulls of the same era.
