    Finding
NARA inventories deck logs for this hull covering 1 December 1943 through 30 June 1945 (Special List 44, by-ship-number listing, p. 118: 'YMS-322 12/1/1943 6/30/1945'). The logs sit in RG 24 (Records of the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Entry 118). Coverage begins days after her 20 November 1943 commissioning - i.e., the inventoried series covers essentially her entire wartime commissioned service through mid-1945.

Crew (~32) and officers, December 1943 - June 1945 log window
    Limitations
An inventory entry, not the logs themselves: establishes that logs exist and their coverage window, not what they record. Logs for July 1945 - April 1946 (her final months through decommissioning) are not in this inventory entry. The hull's logs are not in NARA's publicly digitized deck-log set (check of the navy-online list 2026-10-04 - only renamed/AMS-ex-YMS sisters such as Grouse/YMS-321 and Gull/YMS-324 appear). No asbestos content.

Post-Navy: acquired 1948 by the San Francisco Bar Pilots Benevolent and Protective Association for use as pilot boat Golden Gate; acquired 1978 by Golden Gate Fisheries, Inc. as a fishing boat; later to Pellinen Engineering of Livermore, CA as a recreational vessel; out of documentation 1993; fate unknown. Photo captions document the ship anchored at Guam and in dry dock. Spec block: 270 t.; 136' x 24'6" x 8'; 15 kts.; cpl. 32; one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount, two 20mm mounts, two depth-charge projectors; two 880bhp GM 8-268A diesels, Snow and Knobstedt single-reduction gear, two shafts. COs: LT Charles D. Griffin USNR (20 Nov 1943), LTJG George B. Harrison USNR (1945). Call sign Nan-Peter-Yoke-Jig. Page states 'There is no DANFS History currently available for YMS-322.'

    Limitations
Transcription source, not the manual itself: officialmilitaryribbons.com is a commercial vendor transcribing NAVPERS 15,790; the transcription was not independently verified against the manual page. NAVPERS 15,790 itself carries a documented-error caveat - the Naval History Division found hundreds of apparent errors/omissions in its Leyte Gulf and Lingayen awards and recommended the manual not be relied on without action-report checking (HyperWar transcription of the 1953 errata memorandum). The undigitized RG 24 deck logs (ev-01) are the verification path for the ship's actual positions. No asbestos content.

    Finding
Class context: the YMS-1 type was a wood-hulled 136-foot auxiliary motor minesweeper designed by Henry B. Nevins, Inc.; 481 built for the U.S. Navy (561 hulls including BYMS Lend-Lease boats) at 35 yacht yards spring 1942 - spring 1945. YMS-135 through -445 were the single-stack Mk. II variant - this hull (YMS-322) is within that range. Surviving YMSs were reclassified AMS and given names in 1947; YMS-322, sold to the War Shipping Administration 5 February 1947, left Navy service just before the naming round and was never renamed or reclassified.

    Finding
A wood-hulled diesel motor minesweeper built in 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. As a diesel craft she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-standard applications for a small diesel combatant of this period were diesel-exhaust and machinery lagging, gaskets and valve/flange packing, electrical cable insulation, and friction materials such as winch and windlass brake linings - consistent with the Navy's own 1979 statement that all ships contained some asbestos in components such as clutches and electric cables.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-322. Names era-standard application categories, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no individual exposure. The wooden hull limits (does not eliminate) the structural lagging envelope typical of steel steam vessels.

    Finding
GAO full text (retrieved 2026-10-04): per the Navy, 'all ships contain some asbestos in such components as clutches and electric cables'; thermal insulation 'was the Navy's major use of asbestos aboard ships.' Product specifications for thermal insulation were changed in 1973 to specify asbestos-free materials, but asbestos materials already purchased continued to be installed and 'some ships were delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978.' The 1943 construction of this hull predates every asbestos-elimination step the report documents - its whole service era falls within the Navy asbestos-use period.

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-yms-322-01 through -14
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation naming USS YMS-322 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The mandated four-query CourtListener sweep completed 2026-10-04: both opinion searches returned zero and both docket searches returned a single name-collision hit (Johnson v. C/O Hicks, D. Del. 1:07-cv-00394, a prisoner civil-rights case whose scanned complaint contains the token as an OCR artifact - no vessel reference, not asbestos litigation). No DANFS entry exists for this hull (NavSource states it; the candidate NHHC URL returns a not-found page). The Naval Vessel Register excludes vessels disposed of before 1987, so no NVR entry exists. Unlike surviving YMS hulls in institutional hands (e.g., YMS-328, still in excursion service as Wild Goose), this vessel left federal documentation in 1993 and her fate is unknown - no museum or restoration-body asbestos disclosure exists. The asbestos web sweep surfaced no law-firm or marketing content naming this hull - a genuinely thin record.
