DANFS record for this hull: the second Gull (AMS-16) was launched as YMS-324 by the Al Larson Boat Shop, Terminal Island, Calif., 14 October 1943; sponsored by Mrs. William Toman; commissioned 28 February 1944, 'Lt. B. F. Silviera, USNR, in command.' After shakedown and minesweeping training, YMS-324 sailed from San Pedro 20 June 1944 via Pearl Harbor and reached Guadalcanal 1 August to prepare for the invasion of Peleliu; swept her first enemy mine 14 September, the day before the 1st Marine Division stormed ashore; continued minesweeping at Peleliu and Ulithi for a month; sailed from Ulithi 14 October for the attack on the Ngulu Islands, sweeping mines under enemy fire without damage or casualties; continued duties at Ulithi until departing 19 March 1945 for Okinawa; aided in clearing the approaches to Okinawa and remained in those waters until the fall of 1945, returning to San Pedro 20 September 1945, '15 months to the day from the time she left.' Redesignated Gull (AMS-16) 18 February 1947; returned to the western Pacific autumn 1947 via Pearl Harbor; put in at Chinnampo, Korea, 2 November 1950 to support UN forces sweeping mines; remained off Chinnampo more than a month, clearing the approaches and allowing an evacuation without loss of life - awarded the Navy Unit Commendation. Redesignated AMCU-46 1 August 1954 and underwent conversion at Yokosuka, Japan; redesignated MHC-46 7 February 1955; returned to Long Beach, Calif., May 1955; peacetime training out of southern California ports until decommissioned at San Diego 14 January 1958; 'disposed of in March 1959.' Awarded two battle stars for World War II service and nine battle stars and the Navy Unit Commendation for Korean service. Spec block: (YMS-324: dp. 270; l. 136'; b. 25'; dr. 8'; s. 14 k; cpl. 34). DANFS footnote: 'Gull was the name assigned to AM-399, to be built by the Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, Mich., in 1945. The contract was cancelled 16 May 1945.'

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-maintained archival compilation, not an official registry - its milestone dates generally track DANFS/NVR but conflicts on (a) the AMS-16 naming date (17 vs DANFS 18 February 1947), (b) complement 32 vs DANFS 34, (c) speed 15 kts vs DANFS 14 k, (d) beam 24'6" vs DANFS 25', and (e) first-CO spelling 'Silveira' vs DANFS 'Silviera' - all carried in ev-08/gaps. Photo captions are contributor-submitted with NARA/NHC credits; 'fate unknown' leaves the post-March-1959 disposition undocumented. Contains no asbestos content.

McPherson, 1974; NHC); 80-G-423775 - USS Swallow (AMS-36) and USS Gull (AMS-16) tied up at Chinnampo, North Korea, November 1950, 'after taking part in clearing a channel more that sixty miles from out in the Yellow Sea and up the Taedong River to that city,' with sweep gear - depressors, otters, floats, cable reels - visible (Official U.S. Navy Photograph, collections of the National Archives); 80-G-430072 - USS Gull (AMS-16) sweeping for mines during a commando raid by British Royal Marines at Chinnampo, North Korea, 15 June 1951, 'intended to cut rail and other enemy supply lines,' lookout watching for mines off Gull's bow (Official U.S. Navy Photograph, National Archives); NH 68589 - USS LST-735 (Dukes County) serving as mother ship for seven minesweepers including Gull, probably in a Japanese port, c. 1952-54 (USNI James C. Fahey Collection, NHC). Page text: 'a 270-ton auxiliary motor minesweeper ... built at Terminal Island, California. Commissioned in February 1944, she served in the Pacific during World War II, taking part in the Peleliu and Okinawa invasions. In February 1947, she was redesignated a motor minesweeper (AMS) and renamed Gull (AMS-16) ... During the Korean War, she was very active sweeping mines in the combat zone ... In mid-1954 Gull began conversion to a coastal minehunter ... decommissioned in January 1958. USS Gull was disposed of in March 1959.'

The coverage window opens on the documented commissioning day (28 February 1944) - so the commissioned career's wartime span is indexed - and ends 30 June 1945, inside the Okinawa operations period; the post-surrender return and all post-1945 service fall outside the indexed span. Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, product identification, or primary material record naming YMS-324, Gull, AMS-16, AMCU-46, or MHC-46 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). All four CourtListener base queries returned zero hits: 'USS Gull' opinion (count 0) and docket (count 0, document_count 0); 'YMS-324' opinion (count 0) and docket (count 0, document_count 0). Asbestos-qualified variants were not run because every base query returned a zero count - a zero base means a zero variant per batch rules. No name-collision hits required classification: 'USS Gull' produced zero results entirely, so the distinct Gull I (AM-74) hull never entered the litigation surface. An indexed web sweep surfaced only law-firm minesweeper listicles (mesothelioma.com names 'USS Gull AM-74' - the OTHER hull; mesotheliomahelp.org lists 'USS Gull' generically) - excluded under source policy; and a va.gov BVA indexed search surfaced only unrelated appeals - no decision names this hull.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era materials in a 1943-44 diesel minesweeper would still be consistent with class inference, and the hull's post-1959 fate is unknown (the hull may or may not survive to be surveyed). CourtListener coverage is not exhaustive for unreported or settled matters; undocketed litigation naming this hull could exist. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

[14]Archival leads (not yet retrieved): NARA Special List #44 indexed deck logs for YMS-324 (28 Feb 1944 - 30 Jun 1945, RG 24 series); NARA-held photographs 80-G-423775 and 80-G-430072 (Chinnampo mine-clearance Nov 1950 and Jun 1951); RG 19 Bureau of Ships files for the YMS-1 type and the Al Larson contract; Ship Repair Facility Yokosuka 1954-55 AMCU conversion work orders [other_primary]
    Locator
NARA SL-44 (p.118); NARA photos 80-G-423775 / 80-G-430072; RG 19 design files; SRF Yokosuka conversion record (per NavSource milestone list)

    Finding
Archival leads where a hull-level material or exposure record would live: the indexed deck logs for the wartime period (Peleliu, Ngulu, Ulithi, Okinawa operations) would document availabilities, yard periods, and any material-disturbing evolutions; the NARA-held 80-G photographs document the hull's physical state during Korean service; RG 19 Bureau of Ships files for the YMS-1 type and the Al Larson contract are the design/construction pathway; the 1954-55 AMCU-46 conversion at Ship Repair Facility Yokosuka is the most material-intensive documented yard period (conversion began 1 August 1954, completed 31 January 1955) and any work orders or industrial records for it would be the strongest candidate hull-level material record.

    Limitations
Leads only - existence of these record classes follows standard NARA/agency practice for the period, but no hull-level material document was located, retrieved, or verified; the underlying deck logs were not examined, and deck logs are chronological event records that would not themselves identify asbestos content. The Yokosuka conversion is documented as an event; its material scope is not public.
