Ship-specific federal registration record for this hull (Vessel No. 290117): 'yard class wooden-hulled minesweeper' designed by Henry B. Nevins Yacht Builders, City Island NY; built 1943 by Ballard Marine Railway Co., Seattle, under US Navy contract. Hull double-planked Douglas-fir (one-inch inner, two-inch outer) on double steam-bent white-oak frames; Douglas-fir decks; two GM8-268 500 H/P diesels, twin screws, single stack. Wartime armament: .50-caliber foredeck gun, two 20-mm guns on fold-out sponsons. 'In total, 561 YMS minesweepers were built in thirty-five different shipyards during World War II'; considered expendable, never formally named. Assigned to the 17th Naval District at Adak, Alaska - patrol and minesweeping in the Aleutian Islands. Decommissioned at the U.S. Navy Shipyard, Bremerton, WA; struck from the Naval Vessel Register 29 October 1946; sold to Harold Jones of Vancouver Tug & Barge Co. 16 January 1948; converted to cabin cruiser La Beverie ('no detailed records of this conversion appear extant'); sold late 1950s to Max Wyman, renamed Wild Goose II (Wyman-era alterations 'poorly documented'); sold 1962 to John Wayne for $116,000, renamed Wild Goose; major 1965 remodel preserving WWII-era features and original GMC diesels ('hardly changed since the ship's tour of duty in the navy'); 1969 grounding off San Diego; sold to Lynn Hutchins shortly before Wayne's 1979 death ($750,000); disrepair in the 1980s; Deil Gustafson purchase and substantial repair 1991 (new wiring/plumbing, engine/mechanical overhaul, structural work to hull/bulkheads/decks); moved c.1994 to Newport Beach berth, USCG-certified for ocean charter; Hornblower management from 1994; sold to Wild Goose LLC November 1997; no significant alterations since. Listed NRHP 19 July 2011 for association with John Wayne.

Navy construction-era trades (Ballard, 1942-43); wartime crew (1943-46); yacht conversion/maintenance trades and crew (1948-present)
    Limitations
Federal registration document authored for Wayne-association significance - construction/material detail is descriptive, not a hazmat or material survey. Contains NO mention of asbestos anywhere in ~100 pages. Milestone dates conflict with NavSource on four points (decommission 'May 3rd' timeline vs 29 Oct 1946; Jones sale 16 vs 26 Jan 1948; Jones as Vancouver Tug & Barge vs Seattle; Wayne purchase 1962 vs 1963) - all carried in gaps. No wartime crew, availability, or work-package records included.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but conflict with the NRHP nomination on four points (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content. Armament detail (3"/50, .50-cal vs NRHP) differs from the NRHP nomination's description - carried as a spec conflict in gaps.

    Finding
NARA holds deck logs for YMS-328 covering 26 May 1943 - 31 October 1945 (Special List 44, verified in the published PDF: 'YMS-328 5/26/1943 10/31/1945'). Coverage begins at commissioning and runs through her Aleutian service. The logs are held at the National Archives at College Park, MD (RG 24); they are NOT among the deck logs digitized in the National Archives Catalog - YMS-328 does not appear on NARA's published online deck-log list (checked 2026-10-04).

    Limitations
Archival lead only - the logs are inventoried, not read. Deck logs record events, not material inventories; even when pulled they may contain no asbestos information. Post-October 1945 logs (through October 1946 decommissioning) are not in this inventory line - additional holdings may exist outside Special List 44's 1947 cutoff.

    Finding
Peer-reviewed documentation of asbestos exposure conditions at the yard where this hull decommissioned: the article reviews historical asbestos air-sampling concentrations in shipyards and illustrates typical work conditions, 'a majority of the photographs' depicting Puget Sound Naval Shipyard circa 1940-1965 - a window covering this hull's 1946 decommissioning at the Bremerton navy yard. The abstract notes high exposures 'associated with work in shipyards during and after World War II and the Korean War, as well as with decommissioning, which continued into the mid-1970s.'

PSNS Bremerton trades and any crews undergoing decommissioning work (1940-65 window)
    Limitations
Yard-level literature review, not a hull record - documents asbestos conditions at PSNS generally; YMS-328 is not named, and no record ties yard exposure to work performed on this hull during decommissioning. Article is paywalled; abstract verified via PubMed (PMID 19235622) and DOI record. A decommissioning visit is not itself documented as an availability or overhaul.

    Finding
A diesel-powered wooden minesweeper built 1942-43 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos era: GAO found the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s. Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel vessel of this type and period were exhaust and stack lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and accommodation/galley fireproofing. She carried no steam plant - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of larger combatants does not apply, and her wooden hull carried no structural fireproofing of the steel-ship type.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-328. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. GAO is program-level documentation (full text blocked, gao.gov HTTP 403, confirmed this session - product-page description used). The NRHP registration form describes her materials in detail without once mentioning asbestos.

    Finding
The federal registration document records, as biographical context, that John Wayne was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1964 and underwent surgery removing one lung and portions of two ribs, and that he moved to Newport Beach in 1965 partly for the sea air - across the bay from this yacht's berth. Wayne owned the vessel 1962-1979 and died in June 1979.

    Limitations
Biographical fact only, included to bound the record: the source makes NO claim connecting Wayne's illness to the vessel, asbestos, or any occupational exposure, and this record makes none. Wayne's wartime was spent in film, not shipyards; his cancer history is not evidence about this or any hull and should not be read as an exposure finding.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or museum/operator hazmat statement for this hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion and docket searches for "YMS-328" returned zero hits each; the "Wild Goose" alias queries could not be completed - the fleet pacing budget was exhausted all session - and are logged blocked, not as negative results. The NRHP registration form - the most detailed extant document on her construction materials and alteration history (~100 pages, covering the 1948, 1950s, 1965, and 1991 refit episodes) - contains zero mentions of asbestos. The post-Navy conversion records that might document material removal are expressly not extant per the nomination ('no detailed records of this conversion appear extant'; Wyman-era alterations 'poorly documented').

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the original-era machinery and any retained insulation are undocumented for hazmat content, and the surviving hull operates commercially today. Litigation coverage is partial: only the hull-number queries completed; the yacht-name queries are an open gap (throttled, not run). Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
