    Finding
NARA Special List 44 inventories deck logs held for YMS-330 covering 8/6/1943 - 6/30/1945 (RG 24, National Archives at College Park). The coverage window opens on her completion/commissioning date (6 August 1943); the 6/30/1945 end date is a collection artifact - roughly twenty other YMS hulls in the same inventory share the identical end date while documented as in service into 1946. YMS-330 does not appear on NARA's list of digitized deck logs in the National Archives Catalog (the digitized YMS entries are the hulls later named under the AMS/MSCO program); the logs are an undigitized primary record of her commissioned career.

Header notes the hull 'served the Navies of the United States and South Korea.' Call sign Nan-Queen-Dog-Yoke. Specifications: displacement 270 t.; length 136'; beam 24'6"; draft 8'; speed 13 kts.; complement 50; armament one 3"/50 dual purpose mount (replaced by one 40mm mount) and two 20mm mounts; propulsion two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts. Commanding-officer table lists LT J. B. Thompson, Jr., USNR (1945). A 27 March 1943 launch photo caption records the yard sending YMS-330 down the ways with YMS-328 at the outfitting wharf; a later photograph shows the hull moored between Curlew (AMS 8) and Ganggye (YMS-506), ex-USS YMS-392, in Korean service. Page states: 'There is no DANFS History currently available for YMS-330.'

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates generally track NVR-style data but the struck date (19 Jun 1946) precedes the listed FLC transfer (April 1947) and conflicts with the yard tables' 'to Korea 1948' year (see gaps). Complement 50 conflicts with class figures 33 (class index) and 32 (Wikipedia class data) (see gaps). Contains no asbestos or material content.

uboat.net is a specialist secondary database compiling official records - the milestone block is consistent with NavSource but this record relies on the compilation, not underlying document images. The absence of listed operations entries is not proof the hull saw no operations - it means none were transcribed on this source. No asbestos or material content.

    Finding
The official Pacific Fleet organization document of 1 May 1945 lists YMS-330 under MINECRAFT, PACIFIC FLEET (ComMinecraftPac R. Adm. A. Sharp), in the YMS roster with 'Lt. J. B. Thompson, Jr. (USNR)' as commanding officer - matching NavSource's 1945 CO entry. The row carries the document's location key '96'; the transcription does not reproduce the location-key legend, so the coded duty station is undecoded here.

    Finding
The builder's production table lists YMS-330 as a US Navy minesweeper, 278 tons deadweight, 136 feet, delivered 6-Aug-43, disposition 'To Korea 1948 as Kang Kyong, scrapped 1963.' Ballard Marine Railway was a significant small shipyard from the 19th century through WWII, taken over in 1946 by Pacific Fishermen. The same yard built sisters BYMS-25 through -28 and YMS-326 through -333 (plus PCS-1457/-1458 and YP-635/-636); notable sisters: YMS-327 (reclassified Ruff AMS-54, the last YMS type in U.S. service, struck Nov 1969), YMS-328 (sold 1946, later John Wayne's yacht Wild Goose), YMS-332 (to the USSR 1945 as T-607 per navalmarinearchive / T-611 per the yard table).

Class context for this hull: 'The wood-hulled YMS proved to be one of the U.S. Navy's more durable and versatile types' - 561 yard minesweepers were built at 35 U.S. yacht yards (12 East Coast, 19 West Coast, 4 Great Lakes) beginning with YMS-1, laid down 4 March 1941 at Henry B. Nevins, Inc., City Island, NY. YMS-135 through -445, 480 and 481 (which includes this hull) carried one stack. Class-level specifications on the index: length overall 136', extreme beam 24'6", displacement 320 tons, max draft 6'1", complement 33, one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount and two 20mm mounts, designed speed 12 knots, General Motors 8-268A diesel engines on two shafts, designed shaft horsepower 880. Surviving YMS were reclassified as AMS and given bird names in 1947 - YMS-330, disposed to South Korea, never received one.

    Finding
A wood-hulled, diesel-driven minesweeper delivered in August 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications on a small wooden diesel combatant of this type and period were diesel-exhaust and muffler lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery gaskets and valve packing, and electrical insulation. As a diesel craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - and her wood hull and small machinery spaces imply a substantially smaller insulation footprint than a steam combatant.

Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, or work package located for YMS-330. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no ship-proven presence. The small craft's reduced systems footprint makes the inference weaker than for steam-powered hulls of the same era.

GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, including 'the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos from Navy ships, and compensation programs for asbestos-related disabilities.' Per the product-page highlights, the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas - program documentation spanning the era in which this hull was built (1942-43) and served (1943-1946).

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, VA/BVA decision, or docketed case naming YMS-330 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only 'asbestos aboard' material for YMS-class hulls is law-firm marketing listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it is consistent with both genuinely light insulation fit and simple non-digitization of small-craft records. CourtListener status recorded in the ledger (blocked this session - fleet pacing, not a negative result). Undigitized deck logs (RG 24) and Ballard yard records remain open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
